My BASE Stick

The mods have already said the PDF is not to be posted in the earlier thread. If it were, it would be removed anyway.

It's not our job to do their marketing for them. If they want it posted, they can get off their asses and post it on their own website.

I wouldn't consider that marketing for them. Seems like they are doing a damn good job of it themselves considering the buzz that's going around about the twigs in this thread as well as on FB. It's not a top secret document and it's really not that interesting to be honest. I only requested it because I figured they'd have a few more curves, but apparently those were finalized after the brochure was already made up.

I've shifted through this thread a fair amount, and searched, but wasn't able to find anything about them making actual custom curves from a mold. Is this something that BASE offers?

I believe it might have been in the locked thread, but they will do a mold for you. Only a paltry 2k. I think quality, fully-custom composites at reasonable retail prices are still a bit in the distance.

I have no idea about the product and have never commented on that. I think they're dropping the ball badly in how they launch the brand and getting info out. Then again, they may not be ready for full public disclosure at this point.

I do think it is funny that things people complain about as problems with other brands are written off as no big deal. They have been compared to two or three very different sticks, neither of which has a low kickpoint, yet this stick is described as having one. After reading posts from certain people in the other topic, you could tell exactly what their experience was going to be or will be when they arrive. It's no different than the people that love Bauer and buy their latest skates and rave about them, despite having heel problems.

I'm not picking on any one person, just the collection of things that have been posted.

i got this in a email when i asked to see the "options list"

Please look for a much more detailed and professional presentation on our website in the near future. For the time being, we're just looking to respond to the sooner-than-expected interest in our brand.
etc. etc. not defending them but i dont think they planned they'll be this popular this soon

I got mine today, but I'll have to wait until Friday to try it out. First impression - it feels light like a typical high end stick; it's pretty much the same weight and dimensions as my S19. The sharkskin blade is interesting, a rough sandpaper type finish that looks like it was sprayed on. The custom specs (name, number and logo) were exactly as I ordered. The logo is small, but cool because you can put any jpeg image on it.

I've never actually had anything like that, but does it feel remotely like that odd grip on the U+ CL? I'm just curious about it, because it sounds tempting, but if it's gonna kill my gloves I'd have to say no...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the sharkshin was for the blade only, not the shaft. Either way I don't think I'd find that kind of texture to my liking if it was on the shaft.

Will Base give the discount if you wanted 2 sticks, but different specs? Even just flex?

I got the smooth clear coat finish on the shaft, so it won't kill my gloves. The sharkskin is only on the blade and hosel. I got another stick for a buddy, but he got a grip shaft. It is sort of a "rubbery" ( ???) grip.

Interesting. Something to think about, for sure. Thanks for the info.

I beg to differ. This is part of the email I received from BASE head honcho Ron Kunisaki:

"....at this stage of our business, we are offering custom curves to just the NHL. We do plan to add this capability to our retail customers in the near future. When we do, I will let you know."

So, unless something changed in the past 13 days, I would think that is still their course of action.

I was taking the nice route of saying: "Interesting. Combat does it for less $$$, is local to me, and makes stuff that I like. Thanks for the info."

I just put in my order as well this week. Went with a 75 flex, Jovo/P02, Naked shaft finish. The pattern is called BC05, and was done after the catalog was released.

For anyone interested, the Sharkskin finish on the shaft is similar to Inno/Warrior polarfibre. Nikki mentioned it's a different application process, but that it's going to feel and perform similarly. They also don't necessarily 'recommend' going with it on the shaft because it's going to be very hard on your glove palms.

Obviously, I'm also going to do an extensive review when I get the stick. Not quite sure what to expect, really, because the information that's been available so far seems so varied. So far, Nikki has been extremely helpful, professional, and informative. She will answer any inquiries promptly.

EDIT: I'll always be a Warrior guy, and will continue to use Warrior. I just wanted to give either Brooklynite or Base a good, long, honest look and decided to go with Base for now. I may check out a Brooklynite offering later this season.

So yeah, they do the sharkskin, I'm still worried bout it. And if you get the 2 sticks, if I'm correct the flex/curve/lie must remain the same. The color and name and number however is interchangable. If I'm right.

Extra question: It says on the colors pdf. Canadian sales program Limited time. Then shows the various prices per unit. But when it states "Senior/Int/Junior" it says MRSP 250..does it mean it'll become 250 soon or is that just if it was to be sold in stores..

I still don't get how this is really custom or a ground breaking personalization option? They don't seem to be offering custom curves anytime soon and from the sounds of it if/when they do the mold cost will still be high. I got the PDF order form but really don't see anything intriguing enough to attract my business.

Even with their whole shooting analyzing room thing, I mean if there was a pro shop with that set up/knowledge around me, how would that differ from offering the same curves/flexes I could get from Easton/Warrior/Bauer/CCM? Base can put my name on it, with certain colors, with sharkskin?

I like the names involved with Base and it seems like a novel concept, but I don't think they're ready for prime time just yet. I'll stick to using pro stocks I like and tracking down more of them.

And here is where the business model comes on. It's enough options for most to feel custom, without the serious upcharge of actual custom sticks.

$130-$140 is pretty groundbreaking if the they prove to be on par with the top retail sticks.

And yet Bauer is offering more curve and shaft options for about the same price as a One95 along with the fact that you can handle one of their retail sticks in the store to know if the shaft shape/overall feel of the stick works in your hands. As much as I like trying something new, I can't justify spending the money on something sight unseen. As for the website, or rather a lack thereof for Base, that just feels lazy to me. It wouldn't be so hard to even just put the .pdf stuff up there with some actual pictures of the product.

Granted the price is attractive, but most of the time I can get pro stocks for $100.

That being said, I'm still eagerly anticipating the reviews from Konig von Kuhlem and co. who've gotten their sticks from Base.

Sorry, the website/FB is BS way of handling business. Perhaps I'm an old coot, but it does not make me want to crack open the wallet when I have to ask for something that should be posted regardless of how many fanboys there are.

Not quite sure why this is torquing you? Because you have to seek out the information, it's a bad thing? Just don't buy the sticks, it's really that simple. You have other choices - stay to what you like and what you know. Don't step outside the lines and fear change. It's amusing how worked up some of these posts come off.

To Veks earlier point regarding 'opening a wallet' for an 'unknown product'. That's actually how I feel about everyone's darling around here, Combat. No way in this world would I lay out $200 dollars (plus whatever the cost of shipping is) for a product that had an awful previous reputation, with relatively scarce reviews. I don't care if the name on the side of the shaft has changed, it's reputation was pretty bad. Yet, somehow everyone loves Combat around here. It's strange. Applying the same logic as what's being used in this Base thread.

as i mentioned before, they're obviously doing on purpose. they want to create buzz and get people phoning. maybe they have investors hanging around the facility all day long?

this is a business. not every company NEEDS to have to spill all their beans on the website. they've set this company up as a specialty offering, what good is it to market it like your typical hockey stick manufacturer?

A friend and I have scheduled fittings for this saturday. Will post my experience afterwards. As previously mentioned nikki was very helpful over the phone and email. I received prompt replies from both her and Holmes Ghassemi.
