Looking for new shin pads

Recommended Posts

My son is a peewee tier I player looking for shin pads with deep knees and decent protection on the calf area. Currently Have the top of the line Easton (they are all blue)very expensive and falling apart after a year. I notice Easton is no longer making that model. Aside from them falling apart, great protection, light, stayed in place. Didn't like new S19 or S13. Wondering about Warrior Projekt or other suggestions> Thanks for the help!

I've got a pair of RBK 6k shins (the blue/white model from two years ago, I think?) and they are awesome. Definitely deep in the knee (for me at least) and the calf protection is nice. I also think the strapping is more stable that any other model I've tried. Only downside is they are a little bulky. For that reason I swap between them and a pair of pro stock Jofa 5090s. Good luck.

Edit: I'm talking about the 6k's, not the 8k's

I will second the poster above on RBK shins... well worth it... I have had the '09 8K's and '09 6K's...

The 6K is a great shin pad that I found more protective than the 8K. It offers a little bit of calf protection.

The 8K is very light and very protective from frontal shots. No calf protection though.

The 10K had a large calf-wrap but it was the only noticeable improvement over the 6K and not worth the extra cost... I personally like a little calf protection, but not a huge wrap...

I would strongly suggest RBK pads. Between the 10K, 8K and 6K - they have everyone covered.

I have Reeboks, and love them. I would suggest them, as they bought out Jofa, who used to make the best shin pads available IMO.

I'll have to second Reebok shins. Most protective by far on the market and very light too. The only downfall is they are a wide fit. CCM's are also a wider fit. If that's something you don't like then go with either higher end Bauer or Easton which are both narrower and a deeper fit.

I prefer the Bauers over Jofa/Reebok because the Bauer's are deeper, slightly longer and have a better calf wrap. The Bauer Pros are as protective or more protective than anything Reebok offers, the depth gives them an upper hand on the Jofa design.

I will agree with TBL on the Pro/Pro Lightspeed shins by Bauer... They were the only shin pad I tried on that fit as deep as the RBK's. I was not as thrilled about the strapping system though. The upper strap seemed a little uncomfortable and the bottom strap (part of the calf wrap) did not secure the bad enough for my tastes... I don't use tape though, or at least don't LIKE to use tape...

I liked everything else about the pad, but the strapping system is a huge selling point for me personally.

I like most everything about my 6k shin pads. They are a deeper fit and the strapping system is excellent, much better than the One90's I was using before. Only two complaints are that they are wide near the foot so you HAVE to put the skate tongues inside and the strap hoops are made of plastic and look a bit flimsy.

I like my CCM V10 alot. Calf wrap is very good. The pad is also deep enough and they are very protective. Took three hard shots this weekend and felt absolutly nothing. And you should be able to find them on clerance too.

This is where things are going to differ. I have big calves, the strapping setup and calf wrap is PERFECT. With RBK/Jofa, about half my calf is exposed at the side, with the Bauer's not a bit of calf is exposed from the side. The wrap is where it needs to be and the pad is about 1/4-1/2" deeper than Jofa or Reeboks.

By the way, I do NOT recommend the one95 or Vapor line of protective.

Shockdoctor is also another option but they're a bit of overkill and I wouldn't recommend them for someone with big calves.

CCM's are nice but after the 10.0 line the strapping became overkill IMO. Reebok is basically the CCM pads(well the other way around) but with simpler strapping, except for the sling type shins(4K, 6K). They run a little shorter compared to Bauer. Jofa's are tanks but the liner could be better and they aren't very deep.

Warrior is nice but I didn't feel comfortable with the knee cap. They feel a lot like the Bauer Supreme(one90 and after) line.

Another vote for RBK 6Ks, though I have to warn you that the plastic strap hoops he was talking about ARE flimsy. One broke a couple days ago for me.

However, on the whole and for the price, they're great. My friend gave me his one95 shins, and I feel more comfortable in my RBKs.

Mind if I ask why?

For the price the protection in the knee cap could be better. Comfort and quality is dead on but if I had a kid there is no way I'd put them in those shins. I loved my one90s and it took a while to find a replacement but there where multiple times when I'd get hooked, drop to a knee and had trouble walking the next day because of it.. btw, this issue wasn't a problem when I got them, it popped up about a year after I started using them.

That's funny because I got the One90's after going down hard in my old Supreme 3000's (or something like that) and hurting my knee. First game with the One90's, got tripped and went into the boards knee first and it hurt like hell, but I never fell on my knee hard again after that...been three years, knock on wood...

I will say with the 6k's, leave the top knee protectors on. They come off with velcro, but I went down to block a shot and landed on the top of my knee (OUCH).

I didn't have a problem with the knee protection when wearing One90s (although I used them for under 2 years), but I definitely think there was a durability issue with the knee caps. A team mate had his cap crack and one of the caps on my Nike V14 pads, which I believe used the same caps, cracked. They were a light and comfortable pad, but the knee caps definitely needed to be made more durable and based on your experience more protective.

I think the new Vapor X60s and the previous Vapor XXXX line use different caps. I haven't used either of those pads so I'm not sure if the protection/durability was addressed. I have tried on both though and I have to say the X60 defintely has one of the most secure strapping systems.

I'm pretty happy with the Warrior Projekts I'm using now. It'd be nice if they had the grip liners like most of the Nike, Nike Bauer, and Bauer lines and it'd also be great if the liner was removable. I do have to use tape to secure the pads - the strapping system is similar to the One90 and is comfortable, but it isn't as secure as the V14 or X60. I didn't have to use tape with the V14s and don't think I'd have to with the X60s. I've had no protection or durability issues with the Projekts so far though (I've used them for about 4 months now) and they feel lighter than the One90s on me because I believe they fit me better.

I found my one70's perfectly fine protection wise over the two years I used them and I've used xxxx's for half a season. No protection problems with the xxxx's so far..............

Well yeah but your legs are also about the size of my arms.

Don't you wear 16 inch Bauers? I wear 15's.

Yeah but I fill those shins more than you do. My legs have a bigger circumference that they are long.
