The 2010-2011 Suspension Thread

Recommended Posts

The problem is it wasn't a 'lateral hit'. Thornton is in front of Perron when the hit is made. They should of given the game misconduct to the Blues defenseman for making that pass.

When the Dman makes the pass to Perron there is nobody whatsoever close to Perron. As the pass gets halfway to Perron, Thornton steps out of the penalty box and just clobbers Perron when the pass gets to him. It was a hit to the head no matter if he kept his elbow tucked, didn't jump and Perron wasn't injured.

The fact that he wasn't hurt shouldn't be taken into account when someone may be susupened because I think we almost all agree that its awful that if someone is hurt its almost the only way the NHL will give a suspension.

If Joe hadn't made contact with the head, there'd be no suspension and no discussion.

It looked more to me like David's head ran straight into Joe's shoulder. Thornton didn't raise the elbow, or target the head in anyway. The only thing he could have done is squatted down 8" and tried to hit his chest. I agree with the NHL's idea to crack down on head shots, but you can't suspend Thornton for that hit, then give Carcillo and Kovalchuck a pass for their ELBOWS to Fedotenkos head two nights in a row. Either Fedotenko has scrambled brains right now, or he's Robocop.

Thornton could have hit DP in the shoulder and had the same hockey impact as the hit he did make. Thornton got in front of the shoulder and made the head the primary point of impact. As for Carcillo, I agree, that should have been a suspension as well, but guys like him and Cooke get a free pass from Campbell way too often.

I know Perron is a bit of a legend around these parts with his membership and all, but that act was a bit off putting.

David will miss his 2nd game in a row tonight in NY with "concussion like" symptoms

Max - feel free to retract your quote at any time

True, he could have hit him in the shoulder, but that would have required him bending over to a pretty fair degree, possibly making HIM vulnerable from someone else in the process.

My perspective is Joe didn't hit the head, the head hit him. That's the thing about opinions... we can just agree to disagree. We DO agree that Campbell is a joke when it comes to selective enforcement, and the meager punishments.

Yeah he didn't blindside him considering his shoulder hit him in the left side of the face. So now how is that possible if he hit him from the front? Your shoulder can't hit someone's head from the side if you aren't coming from the side.

I'm not a fan of either but you have to be realistic Joe was probably not very happy and just didn't put too much thought into the hit. It's hockey and it happens he'll take the 2 games or whatever and get back out there and play his game.

Probably 2-3 games, that seems to be what Campbell is giving this year. On a side note, yet another reason to dislike Clutterbuck. He throws a cheap shot at someone at about :17

In the 'interest of player safety', they will make players start taping the open ends of sticks to reduce the sharp edges...but the stick to the mouth will only get 1 game...

I know USA Hockey already has that rule, thought the NHL did as well but it's never enforced if it is an NHL rule.

I just saw he got two games, hmm. I didn't know what to make of it, I figured one game as well, frankly.

Zero chance of a suspension on that one, and I'm the one that thinks most of them deserve suspensions.

You would think at some point in their rise to the NHL these players that get smoked in the middle of the ice with their heads down or admiring passes that they would have learned it's a bad idea... I got smoked like that in my first few games of peewee hockey, guess who didn't skate with his head down through the center of the ice ever again

Where did you want him to look? He didn't even have time to move his head as the puck had just left his stick before he got clobbered. Staal was in an area that should have been safe for Stajan until Staal decided to go for the big hit. It does look like a clean hit but at the same time IMO there is a clear contact with the head as Staal lifts into the hit. I'm not 100% sure if it's a suspendable hit but given the state of the NHL disciplinary actions I think Staal will get 2.

I think its a perfectly clean hit, but with the way things have gone this year, I wouldn't be surprised if he sits for a couple games.

There is room for too much interpretation at this point, there is no clearly and easily identifiable limitations. Of half a dozen responses, there are differing views on the legality, and whether or not the hit warrants a suspension.

I'd really hate for things to keep going down the same path and the game to change significantly from the physical game I've grown up enjoying, to some scoring showcase where teams put up football like numbers every night.

Staal was in an area that should have been safe? What does that even mean? Bottom line is Stajan was admiring the pass while skating down the middle of the ice. Bad idea, and Staal showed him why.
