Reebok Shin Pad Problem

Recommended Posts

I've got a pair of Reebok 6k shin pads, the 2010 KFS models. They have been great except for the top removable flap. I had it off for a few ice times but landed on my knee with a good amount of pain when blocking a shot. Reinstalled them, but now they catch on my pants and every single shift the pants get stuck under the flaps. I keep trying to stuff the things back down into the shins, but they pop back up when skating, and I'm considering removing them.

I'm referring to the flap above the knee cap:

I'm a little confused. You wear socks over them, right? How are the pants getting under them? Try taping them down around your legs maybe?

I have those 6K's too and they do the exact same thing that you mentioned with the extra knee padding flap attached. That pad has enough "spring" in it to push the socks out enough so that during play the pants will wedge themselves under it and stay there. Taping them around the legs is an option, but I bought a nice high end pad with a good strapping system in order to NOT have to use shin tape on them. I got sick of that flap as well and took it off. Maybe with taping it down, over time it would get broken in to the point where it would lose that spring and lay better against your leg, and you could lose the tape eventually.

what do you use to hold your socks up? do you just tuck them behind your shin pads? maybe try a garter, or compression shorts with velcro that might help you a bit.

and how do you like those shin pads other than the flap catching? ive been thinking about getting a pair.

After never experiencing this before, I had the exact same problem with my shin pads at the start of this year. It happened on my first skate of the year, while testing out a brand new set of pants, and new garter belt/jock combo. After this icetime, I proceeded to buy new shin pads as well, and still had the same problem on my second skate of the year. It took me a couple hours of dry fitting my gear after that to figure out that my problem was not my new pants, or new shin pads. My problem was my new garter belt/jock combo. I noticed the garter belt did not hold my socks up as high and/or tight as my previous velcro shorts. Therefore, when bending at the knee, my sock was not tight enough to hold that top flap down, and it was catching on my pants. Needless to say, I switched back to my velcro shorts, and the problem has dissapeared. Hope this helps.

I have shorts that hold the sock up. And the flap wedges between my knee and the cap so it sticks up. I might take it off again and hope I don't hurt my knee, but it sucks. Also thought about heating them up with a heat gun and bending them so maybe they'd stay down.

Why don't you take a piece of elastic and sew it across the pad? Basically for the elastic to pull it down, when you'd straighten your leg it would stretch the elastic then it would pull it back in when you bend your knee.

Hey Jarick (or anyone else),

If you do end up ditching the flaps is there anyway that you would be willing to stuff 'em in an envelope and send them to me? I know, strange request right, but I have the older style RBK 6K shins that have kind of a stubby flap at the top of the pads. I have been looking at modifying them by adding something like the removable flaps that your pads have.

Thanks,

Z

Strange you're having that problem...I have the 6Ks and have never had the flaps get in the way. That being said, I have tight-fitting socks overtop of them.

I had the same problem with my 5K shin pads. I know a lot of pros cut the top flap off. Is that a bad idea?

yesterday a guy from our team was hit by the puck right above the knee when he tried to block a shot

think twice)

I was having this problem with my Reebok shins before and simply taped them down until they just naturally stayed that way after a number of usages. If you are considering new shins I'd go for a new pair of CCM's because they've put an elastic bands on theirs to eleaviate the problem.

I think maybe by tucking them down I was trapping them between the liner and shell and forcing them to spring up. Putting them all the way out might help them lay flat.

Last practice, I noticed the pads slid around quite a bit, like they were too big. I've always worn a 14", and the 13.5" seems small, but I snapped a couple photos. Now I prefer to wear the shins inside the tongues but with these I've had to wear them outside. Do these look big or properly sized to the trained eye?

the bottom picture is the way i wear mine. i have the old jofa 9040s that only have one strap in the back of the knee. i use another velcro strap that goes around my calf and some skate laces just below the strap wrapped around like an X to the back of my knee, to strap em down better. maybe try that if you feel its too lose. i dont really care for tape it just doesnt work for me, plus with an old pair of laces your not wasting money on clear tape.

The odd thing is the left side of the pad sometimes slides into the boot and then pushes up. Sometimes it stays outside. The right side clears nicely.

I've got the velcro wraps, I'll try cinching them tighter tonight.

For sizing though, I'm seeing recommendations all over the place. These are 14" pads, so if I'm supposed to go to the top of the boot, it looks like I should be in 13's, but that would leave an even bigger gap on the sides. But those 13.5's felt pretty small in the store. I brought my skates to try them on again today.

Maybe the Reeboks just won't work with the Grafs?

Would I have to cut the liner as well?

Jarick, as you wish. If only it will cause any discomfort. In this case you can go with your 14" pads. Just a little customization. after cutting you can smooth the plastic edges and forget about the problem.

You can easily do it with this model because there is a lot of plastic behind the backstich.

Very interesting.

Well I'll take my skates to the shop and try on the 13.5's...if they don't seem like they will work, I'll try strapping the pads down with some extra tape/straps tonight...and if that doesn't work I'll probably ask for a bit more advice before I bust out the Dremel.

Thanks!

what about if you tried a longer pair instead of shorter, as long as its not resting on top of your foot you should be ok, plus it would help protect the top of your foot? if im thinking right the graf is a little bit lower cut boot then most other skates. i dont know about you but if you go shorter that leaves the top of your foot quite exposed and taking a shot on the top of your foot sucks.

I don't think that would work since the bottom of the pad is just about resting on the top of my foot in the skate. Any longer and it would push the pad above my knee when I take a stride.

don't know if these are available to you locally, but check out the bauer pro series shin pads. very similar cut as the kfs pads, but lengthwise, they seem to fall right in between reebok sizes. in other words, pro series 14" is like reebok 14.5", 13" PS is like 13.5" reebok and so on. made the switch from a pair of 14" 8k's which were just slightly too long for me, and maybe just a hair too wide, and the 13" pro series are perfect.
