Atlanta Thrashers prospect in serious condition

Recommended Posts

damn, again...a play where a hit is made and no penalty is called. but after the fact one is called, this reminds me of the hit Kronwall put on Havlat. No call at first but because the refs feel "Obligated" to make a call cuz a player got hurt.

Wow, that was a pretty brutal hit. Best of luck to him. The hit looked clean and that he was in an awkward position to take the check.

Had his head down...damn these kids need to keep their eyes up!

It happened directly behind the referee, you can see that in the replay. Linesmen aren't permitted to make a penalty call, but can tell the referee what they saw and the referee can assess a penalty based on that.

Actually his head was up, he was looking to make a pass and was facing the open ice. He just wasn't looking up the boards.

My only issue with the hit was that he lead with his hands/forearms up high, like 90% of hits you see. It was an unlucky break for the kid, hope he's able to live a normal life again soon.

First of all, I hope the guy makes a full recovery. It's always a shame seeing someone seriously injured. With that said, I don't think the hit was dirty. The other player glided into him, he didn't jump and he didn't throw an elbow. It certainly wasn't a late hit as he still had the puck. The injured player didn't exactly have his head down, it seemed like he was looking cross ice to try to make a pass. He then didn't see the guy coming straight at him. I don't think a penalty should've been assessed and it does seem like the penalty was tacked on because their was an injury involved.

Hopefully no one went after the guy who through the hit or will target him the next game. Clean hits shouldn't be punished. A cheap elbow, a hit from behind, a spear, sure, but this didn't look cheap from the video. Its very unfortunate that the player was hurt, but there doesn't seem to be a malicious intent to injure.

Nope thats a textbook hit, he did have his head down. If he didn't he could have avoided it or not been injured.

yes, if you look at the replay where its sorta closer in (about 1:05 in). You see he looks up & across the rink for his target then looks down at the puck to make the pass. It's at that point he's laid out. I hope he's ok for sure. no one deserves to be jerked over playing the game they love.

Ya for sure. Plus he was leaning forward with his eyes down or looking over to make the pass so his body was more horizontal. Bad situation to get hit in.

I had almost exactly the same situation the other day just mirrored since I'm a lefty and it was a corner on the other side of the net. I got rid of the guy behind me on a sharp turn (just like the guy in the video but I didn't lose control over the puck) glanced if anyone wasn't coming down the boards and noticed only referee so I assumed I had time to make a play and then as I was looking to make an outlet pass wingman got from behind the referee and was gliding at high speed towards me. Because his body was stalled and he came from the area I assessed "safe" for the moment (and opposing team colors weren't much different from the boards and advertisements on them like in the video) my eye didn't pick him up even though he still was in my peripheral vision and was closing up pretty quick. I saw him the last second and barely escaped the hit. He caught my knee (healthy one, fortunatly) and it caused a turn over and almost a goal. No penalty was called.

I kept my head up almost entire time and I didn't see the guy almost until he was up in my grill. I think one way of limiting that kind of hits would be not to use white away jerseys. Definitely easier to spot someone in a vivid color.

But that's just my 2 cents.

Edit: I mean you're supposed to have an advantage at home and you opposition team having "stealth" uniforms is a BIG disadvantage nowadays.

The hit in the video was more or less a clean hit. Head down at the time of the hit, and he got drilled. Unfortunate that he was injured.

I mean don't get me wrong it's unfortunate and I feel bad for him but it coulda been avoided or alot better if he was more aware of his surroundings. Hope he is ok!

Yes he is. I think they are cousins.

Yeah that's it. Brad's dad played in the minors, and obviously his uncle, Ryan's dad, played in the NHL.

Poor guy fumbled the puck, tried to regain control and make a play. While leaning forward with head turned gets hit. Tough hockey play, but clean. Hope he has a full recovery.
