Changing to Tongue with more padding?

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few guys on here swap the tongues on their skates. I took a shot right on the bridge of my foot last night. I expected there to be a little more padding there but guess not. Looking at some of the other skates, I noticed my RBK 9k's are a little thin in that area compared to the Bauer Supreme line and others.

What are some of the better protective tongues? How would I go about swapping them?

Thx!

I find the Graf tongues are fairly thick and protective. Find someone locally that can change them at a hockey repair shop. If you have to, you can always send them away to be done. Places like Peaches in Portland or George's in St. Paul seem to be highly recommended and professional.

The only place that I think would even remotely be able to do them is Saveology Iceplex where the Panther practice. Other than that I'll prob need to send them away — or buy new skates.

I can help you out if you make it over to the Ft. Myers are at all. Just sent you a PM.

I know my local shoe repair shop can put new tounges on skates, but I'm not sure if all shoe repair shops have the proper machine. It's worth a try though if you have one in the area

Thanks, I work in Weston so maybe one night after work I can cross over there. Hour drive or so right?

Something with an insert is going to more effective than just a felt tongue.

I just got 9Ks and knew I was going to change the tongbue as soon as I tried them on.

I put the tongues from my old bauer Vapor XXRs. They aren't that great of a tongue, but I like them much better than the stock ones.

You probably want a nice tongue with platic in it. I think Bauer sells the X60 tongue. Might want to look into that.

Wouldn't skate fenders be a better option here? I haven't used a tongue that really takes shots well.

Technically the fenders wont protect you from a hit on the top side of the tongue.... Still, I own a pair and use them regularly, and they are simply-put, AWESOME! You dont feel them at all and they are SO protective!

I have custom tongues on my pro stock bauer supreme one95's from east west hockey in san jose, ca. The toungues have a plastic metatarsal gaurd(insert) in them, and well:

the plastic insert is really just meant to protect from lace bite. I think no matter what, and shot off the top of your foot is gonna hurt like hell. its just the way it is. custom tongues are gonna run you at least 75 bucks installed, and although they may look cool, they really wont notice any difference when it comes to taking a shot off the top of your foot. Its just part of the game

Took a shot off the left foot tonight LOL Guess both feet match now.

I blocked a lot of shots apparently so even a little extra padding might help. My shinguards are always covering the top of the tongue so that area is protected.

what about the clear plastic skate guards like the Montreal Canadians defencemen are using? They would at least cover the bottom part of the tongue and the only game would be from between the bottom of the shin guard to the top of the skate guard.

Im leaning towards either changing out the tongues or just living with it until I buy new skates. The shot really wasn't even a hard one — I've seen much harder slapshots with some guys I've played with so I'd hate to see how it feels to take one of those off the foot.

Ah, thanks to Wrangle for clarifying... for what ever reason I though of skate fenders as http://torontohockeyrepair.com/c_ankle.htm but that makes no sense now. Maybe an ankle guard works as well as a new tongue and probably better.

cheers

We always called those ankle guards. I've still got my Coopers from the 60s, but they won't fit modern skate boots, they're so much thicker.

I think it will hurt no matter what you have on your skate. Period

I have to disagree with you on this one, I have blocked shots at a pretty high level and haven't had too much pain with a lot of the skates I have worn.

Agree. Skate fenders and wearing your shins over your tongues are about the most bulletproof solution. The FIRST day I wore my fenders I took a slapper right on the inside of my ankle that was sore for almost two months from a previous slapper in the same exact spot. Never felt the shot.
