I all ready new Ovechkin was more appropriately pronounced Avyechkin phonetically. Not really surprising to see that most of them are wrong, but it is pretty surprising that it took this long to have a player step up and try and get corrected.

I believe Varly asked for his name to be changed over a year ago. I don't think he is behind the push to restructure everyone's names, that's be the IIHF.

Anyone have your name butchered face to face or over a speaker at any point in your life? What was your reaction - as in what did you think when it happened? Now translate that to being in the NHL and having it butchered every game - maybe multiple times. Heck.... a lot of the immigrants that went through Ellis island had their names phonetically butchered.... I know that the spelling of my grandparents names resembled nothing like they were "in the old country".....

The guys at RDS already pronounce names the way they should (they even ask the players themselves before games to make sure it's the right pronunciation). I always thought this was a good thing and I'm still wondering why Semin sounds like Semen when I play NHL 11 ahah

I'm all for announcers using the correct pronunciation, except for guys like Jim Hughson and Pierre Mcquire who overexaggerate the name. They sound like a kid using the F-word for the first time; just having way too much fun with it.

In my entire life I have only had ONE person get my name right the first time. A third grade teacher.

The funny part is sometimes they hear me say it & there fine but as soon as they see the spelling there lost.

I can relate to this, my last name is butchered often. My last name is single syllable only, but I've heard "Yo-on" and "Yeu-on". Park is actually pronounced "PAK" (like Richard Park) and Kim is "GIM". Best thing is that there is no "Z" in Korean, so I hear "KoJlov" instead of Kozlov.
