Skate Advice

Recommended Posts

On my daily browse of ebay I found a pair of skates that I thought would work well for my brother. After some convincing he pulled the trigger. The listing itself says "These skates were worn for a few practices and one game by a Stars player" so when they arrived and I pulled them out of the box I was surprised by what I saw. I don't know much about skates but I know when something doesn't look right. It looks like the steel is awfully small and the right toe is pulling away from the boot/holder. I would just like some other opinions from people a little more knowledgeable than myself. So if you have a chance could somebody possibly take a look and tell me what they see. Can upload more pictures if necessary.

One 95 Pics.

NHL skates do take a beating, but those look like they've experienced more than "a few practices and one game". If you paid a lot for those skates you may want to get familiar with the eBay buyer protection pages to see what your options are.

Like JJ said, you can use the Ebay buyer protection to help you solve your case. Ebay is pretty good about helping out. Earlier this year I had to use them and the experience went well and I got a full refund back including shipping. I used the term product wasn't as described to get my jersey returned. which it wasn't.

I'm guessing people lie about used equipment on 75% of all posts on craigslist or ebay etc. My guess is people always take the time they actually used it and advertise that cut in half.

Weird to see LS2P on a "pro stock" skate...might be bogus.

Also what I had thought. Figured that even if they were retail for what he paid it would be a decent deal if they arrived in the condition he had stated. They have a sticker from the Stars with a date but I couldn't find any pictures of him playing on the date. Also doesn't help the sticker has a skate slice through it.

I had a pair of One95's from the Hartford Wolf Pack (Moore's maybe?) that had LS2P on them.

To the OP- Is there a white tag on the inside of the tendon guard, or a size and number written in blue ink under the footbeds?

Not many pro guys in LS2P, hence why I said "might."

But yes, Monty is right - pop the insole out and if you see hand-written pattern number and size, they are custom.

Looks like WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than 1 game and a few practices worth of use to me. As you said, that's a lot of wear, and they've clearly been sharpened a tonne of times given how little steel is left.

They have the hand written pattern and size so they are true customs

Have you contacted the seller with your concerns?

He has but shockingly the guy hasn't responded. Think he is going to attempt to get some of his money back or just straight send them back. Thanks for all the help guys.

An update based on hat he sent back.

Hey man yeah I work for the Dallas stars and I got the skates straight from them like all of my pro stock star stuff and we put the stickers on the skates before use so when the guys are sharpening they always know exactly what edge to cut them at just incase they forget. Ribiero normally has his steel crossgrinded down cause he likes low steel and will even put his old steel in new skates to keep that's also why I've received ribiero skates before without steel. Ribiero also uses ultra waxed laces and ties his skates kinda oddly off to the aides which puts a little more strain on the eye lits. As far as The foot beds I am sorry I didn't mention that but I would try superfeet that is what moat of the guys use including my self. And ribiero does flop his tounges and has a special line stocked in them to help fold where he likes it so when he does switch skates he keeps his tounges and they place the tounges they came with back on them

Those all sound like things that could possibly have been worth mentioning in the original auction, before you bought them.

Agreed. Seems pretty sketchy on his part but he seems happy with them for the price. I'm going to let it go. Thanks for all the advice/help guys. Stuff like this is the reason this place is the best around.

I actually bid on these skates, you must have outbid me lol.

But I knew something was fishy when I asked him if he wouldn't mind sending me larger pictures.

But if you are concerned with the toe cap such, you can apply glue or toe cap resin and fix it yourself, those skates will still outlast a retail pair.

Even if you keep the skates, and they probably will hold up OK, make sure to give him horrendous/scathing feedback. He said they've only been used a couple times, but they've clearly been heavily used, and he should have mentioned all the cross-ground steel, replaced tongues, etc. Make it harder for him to sell anything in the future, because this guy was simply not being honest.
