zachary 2 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Watching this video I was surprised until I realized HS hockey here in Illinois is just as bad. Complete gongshow and I would compare my HS team to Slapshot without being semi-pro and being real life. Such a joke...
reverseit 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Oh yeah, I see what you mean after rewatching it.There's no place for brawls of this magnitude in hockey, at any level. Like most, I can get into a fight when it has meaning during the game or I understand why small scrums start around the net after play has stopped, but something like this should never happen.More likely than not, the ref probably let a lot of BS go on throughout the game and just lost control
Drewhunz 3 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Can't say as I'm surprised as I've banned both teams from entering the pro shop for their behavior. Now whenever they have a game at the rink a parent is delegated to bring in the skates to be sharpened (still boggles the mind why you would play a game on a fresh edge), tape, misc accessories. Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 (still boggles the mind why you would play a game on a fresh edge)I like fresh edges, having a consistent feel on the ice from game to game is a good thing. I usually do mine every three games or so.
Drewhunz 3 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 But I'm sure you also sharpen your own skates. I've sharpened many a pair that were hideously off square and wonder how quickly they can adapt and not worry about an injury from losing an edge or being acclimated to a prior poor sharpening. I always give myself at least one skate on a new edge before I play in a game and I KNOW I'm getting a good edge.
skeeter14 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Yep I was a 15 year old sophomore at the time that had just been rammed from behind into the boards and had been down on the ice for about 5 minutesAs a high school hockey player in Texas the league is a complete joke, it is known that Mansfield (a team in close vicinity to Martin) has payed the refs in a game and Martin has dressed suspended players in other players jerseys along with Marcus High schoolWe as a team left the ice during the third period this past week when an African American player was called the N word in front of the ref but the ref clearly did not like us so he did nothing about it. The ref was Toma Nua who everyone around Texas will claim as a biased ref who regularly throws gamesThere are a LOT of accusations in there. And I'm not calling you out as a liar or anything of the sort, but if even HALF of those are true, I don't know how or why anyone would play in the High School league there. That is absolutely disgusting!!!!! it makes that brawl look like a facewash fest

Plus, the different video angles show the ref calling an obvious penalty right before the brawl begins: http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/boxscore.html?gameid=1559761I'm still trying to figure out how 41 in black didn't get a penalty. From this camera angle (0:05 mark), he clearly throws one of the ugliest hits... a butt end, boarding hit from behind:

On the surface I would imagine that it would have a lot to do with reasonable discussion occurring as opposed to a flame war. That's why I ask.

I can say that when something like this happens, refs do their best to record the info. Most will break out their "riot pad" and start writing down numbers and penalties, but even then you will miss some. I didn't get a good look to see if they were using one ref and two linesmen or two refs and no linesmen. Long story short, it's hard to keep track of everything when it all blows up.On the surface I would imagine that it would have a lot to do with reasonable discussion occurring as opposed to a flame war.And you would be right

skeeter14 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Sadly, he isn't making accusations.I didn't doubt that what he said had an element of truth to it, but I guess the word "accusations" snuck out from being a journalism major in college. Anyways, that's sad. Really sad.On a side note, given the poor disciplinary records of the team, and others in the league, can't USA Hockey come down on the coaches and remove their certification? Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 On a side note, given the poor disciplinary records of the team, and others in the league, can't USA Hockey come down on the coaches and remove their certification? It's up to the leagues to do that. skeeter14 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 It's up to the leagues to do that. USA Hockey does not involve itself in local issues, no matter how bad they are.So (just so I understand it straight) it would be on the league to request USA Hockey to take action?Something tells me with these videos and other posters first hand accounts, this league would never admit defeat like that. They'd rather just have this cycle continue (as it has already).

That is absolutely disgusting!!!!! it makes that brawl look like a facewash festI wouldn't believe any of it either but sadly that is the state of this league, the rich get richer, the traditional powerhouse programs are protected because they bring the league the most revenue.I know my reasoning for playing is that you get to play with all your friends from school, it's tough to get everyone on the same travel team due to loyal to particular coaches, kids from school come out and watch us play and you get a VERY slight sense of school pride while playing. 4-5 years ago the league was absolutely fantastic and I got a huge sense of school pride playing, plus in the 50 percent of games that aren't biased or dirty the competitiveness is pretty good; at the Varsity level I would compare it to U18 AA.The real problem is some of the coaches and organizations in general; once that bad blood gets out of the league I feel like it will be good again;I really hope this is the first step to causing a change so future kids can have as much fun in the league playing with their school mates as I did. The funny thing is my high school almost always wins the summer league (we have Junior A kids and tier 1 billet kids come back) yet we still hate the league
