APX vs. X60

Recommended Posts

We had a Bauer Product Demo Test event at our rink yesterday. Dealers were able to skate on APX. One thing I noticed is that the red stripe on the boot appears to be a decal and will chip away. I think the boot looks better with the dings on it!

I felt like the forefoot was skinnier, however i didnt mold the skates, I went with the same size as my x60's, my arches hurt after just wearing them for a little over 10 minutes. I hope that moving up a size may help or just molding them. Other than theat the skate felt really solid. They heel lock was superb. We'll see if I can get used to them.

I'm wearing 8D in my X60s and tried on 8D in APX today. They were definitely a bit longer. I could fit a pencil behind my heel when pushing my toes to the cap. My 60's have no room to do that. Not sure if it truly is a few mm longer or just the APX toe box area creates a bit more space but the shape of the APX toebox does seem slightly more ergonomic than the x60. A 7.5D might be a better fit for me in the APX. Shop was out of 7.5 so have to wait another day to try.

I just got a pair of APX's monday night and skated in them on tuesday. Im coming out of a pair of one95s that were a 7.5D and when i went to the shop the guy said the APX run a 1/2 smaller then regular skates. So I ended up getting a pair in 7.0D and they are awesome. I was just a little surprized when I had to go down a 1/2 size.

They have a ttaly different style to them. The one95 I could flex fward alot more but the heel lock wasnt that great in the one95. The APX has an amazing heel lock your foot doesnt slip out or anything. The only real issue I ad with them was footbed made it seem like the skates were to small and my toes were touching before I started skating. As I was skating the footbed got broken in I dont even notice it. I know the APX is super light but I really had a hard time comparing them to my one95s because those were really light to. but all in all the APX is a great skate I really like it more then my one95s.

I'm currently skating with an X60 for about a year and a half and for a long time the base of my great toes (In the area where people get bunions) are so painful I can barely make it through a whole game. I had the skate punched but only mild help. So if what im reading is correct the consensus basically says that this area is slightly wider on the APX?

I have owned one95's, x:60's, and now APX. I will say that they truly took the best part of the one95(stiffness) and the best part of the X:60(fit) and put them together! The APX to me fits the same as the x:60 but with a tiny and I mean tiny bit more room. The room may even be an illusion to the feet because the inside of the skate is so comfortable. They felt amazing out of the box! I actually went to a 12d from the 11.5ee x:60. I was feathering the toe cap the same as in my x:60's. I think this is due to the new footbed, but they bake and mold better than the 60's imo and also have a much better heel lock. I am not so sure about the fusion steel. I will probably put my step steel in and give those a try.

MY ONLY WARNING!!!!! I am 6'6 300lbs I have strong legs and I can barely flex the skate when it is laced all the way up. I found skipping an eyelet was perfect. The lateral stability is ridiculously stiff! To me, stiffer than my one95's and much stiffer than the Vapors. If you are of smaller stature these may be too much. The guys at the shop I bought them at were saying i was probably the first guy to buy them or try them on that could get the benefits out of the skates due to the stiffness.

I love them though!

Edit due to hear say.

They also told me that the graf and ccm reps are saying Kopitar's injury was due to the boot being to stiff.

Graf and CCM reps, you don't say?

lol! of course they would say that, but if he was wearing super tacks would he really not have broke his ankle?

Who knows I was not there to hear the conversation.

Either way I love the skate. Just stating they are very stiff. Just trying to help

How do people find the tongue on the skates? Any pressure or lace bite?

The tongue is pretty thin coming from custom felt tongues. But it is not enough to bother me or even make me think about it.

I picked up a pair of APX last Friday from my LHS and immediately put my Step Velocitys on them. It feels like the right move for me.

I've skated on them twice, once at a casual skate time for 90 min and the other was a full hour workout.

The skates are super stiff as mentioned, but the APX is a much better skate than my pro One90 w/LS2 that lasted the whole season.

Another skate in an hour. So far, so good.

If you're THAT concerned about fit, go try them on in a few different sizes. I can't stress that enough. I got custom-fitted for APX's last week by DarkStar. I'm looking forward to them coming in. Great experience, very informative. Tried on Total Ones for kicks and they felt flat to my feet.

As for stiffness, I have X60's right now, I'm used to stiff. I weigh 135 lbs and stuck with the standard. If you're concerned it's too stiff, you can go custom and get 1's. Or, if you're skyscrape's size and you think you could use it, you could go for a 3. Aside from the boot sizes, and the tongue (wider by 1/2") I stuck with all the standard options on the APX.

I figured if I was going to be getting a top-end skate, I might as well go the extra mile and take the custom route.

Very good point! I am curious to see what you think about the stiffness when you skate in them for the first time. I love them!

If you like stiff and they fit...this is your boot!

I'm assuming the stiffness will be fine for me. I don't mind the lateral stiffness in the X60's. It's really nice having the responsiveness and support in hard turns. I didn't have that in my Graf 703's. They're not starting on custom orders until June 1st. So I'm anxiously awaiting skates that fit correctly.

Europeans dont remotely skate like US players. For CCM and Graf to say that is a pathetic attempt at trying to bash the skate. A pro hockey player breaking his ankle because of the skate LOL!!!! Maybe a shot broke it and they twisted it.

Some company reps will say anything, true or false. Some shop guy will hear it, believe it, true or false and then tell others as if it is fact. Based on the logic of the skate causing him to break his ankle, therefore all broken wrists are caused by your hockey gloves. Carry on............

I had a friend in Graf 703's break his ankle on the same date two years in a row. I wore 703's for 13 years and never had a problem.

His problem wasnt the brand..... it was skating on that day LOL

Wouldn't stiff skates provide more ankle support, thus making you LESS, not more likely to break your ankle? When I first saw the Kopitar ankle break, and thought about him recently switching to APXs, the one thing I thought of was that the APXs are a fairly low cut skate, which would reduce ankle support, but that was just a really weird fall that torqued his ankle like mad, and in all likelihood he'd be just as injured regardless of what skates he was wearing.

Match an APX to an X:60 or 7.0. The APX is not a "fairly low cut skate." I did this myself during a custom boot fitting.

The cut is not that low. The point I am trying to make is that the top of the boot pushes into the side of your leg. It has no lateral stability at that point. If you went over sideways and the foot could not give your bones will lose to the stiffness of the skate. It was a freak accident that put him on his toe and for some reason the skate stayed planted. It is not the skates fault. But I believe that it did not help the situation either.

I am sorry i made the comment and removed it from my original post. I love the skate and now it seems like none of this has to do with the fit vs. the x60.
