How to TOTALLY take everything off the exterior of a stick?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how to take everything off the exterior of a stick?

I have tried Medium grain sand paper, scotch-brite pads, and a few other things, and nothing seems to TOTALLY take everything off of it.

My idea being to get it smooth, and totally blacked out, and decrease the weight oh-so-slightly.

I was thinking VERY course grain sand paper? Paint thinner? Or something else?

Thanks guys.

If anyone gets me some info, I will do it on my next few sticks and post a tutorial for future users.

You want to take the paint off to decrease the weight? Seriously? The amount of weight paint adds onto a stick is nowhere close to being noticeable...

Well...if you really want to, some sticks you can just wrap the entire stick in cloth tape, and just start ripping away...paint will come off. Warrior sticks are notorious for that.

I use a sander to remove the paint and graphics from my blades. the shafts are not as easy, since they are not flat along the sides, most have a slight dish.

so you wanna take off the graphics to decrease the weight yet want to paint them black with paint that will likely weigh more with each coat required to look even...

Don't see anything mentioned about painting the stick black...

You might want to try oven cleaner, does a good job on paint & doesn't affect most plastics.

I'd test it out on a spare shaft first though.

Use a random orbital sander with 80 grit paper. I use this when repairing sticks to strip them down right to the carbon. On some sticks with the grip and multiple layers of paint, it's quite a task to remove it all. The paint does not come off easy.

I never had a problem with any of my warriors and chipping paint, however the easton sticks in the same generation as the s17....are horrific when it comes to paint. Sticks look two seasons old after about a weeks use

Belt sander.

Probably what I will go with.

It will actually end up being close to 10-20 grams depending on the stick, I have done it before. It is more for the smooth texture, but 20g off a stick is noticeable.

Nope, I have done this in the past to Pro Stock sticks, took me forever, but with medium grain sand paper I got them down to the base coat of whatever is on them, looked sick, and I'm not going to repaint them.

Hmmm, I'll look into that.

The whole noticing a 20 gram difference is all in your head

and the 20gm is throughout the whole length of the shaft/stick. YOu wont notice it at all.

Yeah... 20 grams... not going to notice. 50 to 100 grams... yeah, probably.

Well, I just did two sticks with a belt sander, and IDK, I think the next one I do I should weigh before and after, because the sticks I am using now are definitely a good 60 grams lighter. One stick was an old Warrior Dolo Pro Stock 100 Flex, probably 475 grams before, and now its lighter than my Crazy Light, and its about a 80 flex.

But, idk, I can totally feel a difference.

If you took 60g off a dolomite, I wouldn't use it on the ice. Or at least plan on using it for long. Removing that much material has thinned the shaft walls considerably.

Doubt you'd remove 60g as Chadd said unless you got into the resin itself; hopefully not the cloth too. And if you're able to feel any difference in weight you can have a custom decal made and call the stick the "Placebo".

Maybe your right, but maybe I will post a video, it just feels a lot lighter ON THE ICE, and a bit whippier.

I can't really explain it, you have to experience it, but it feels good. It might only be 30-45 grams, again I don't know an exact weight, but I can feel the difference.

Another thing I did today was take a Old INNO Maniac Pro Lite II, and make some mods. It had a Square toe blade, which I sanded down and made round (with some other materials to make sure the core stayed solid. And took the Sander to it, and it feels SOOO much better to shoot with now.

I don't understand why guys are going after Caz for wanting to shed 20g and make the shaft smoother. I mean, it's his stick/his cash. Not to mention, didn't Easton create the weight adding end plug which adds 20 or so grams to the shaft, or takes it away if you don't use them? But that's genius, right?

Caz, I hear you on this. Some of the graphics companies use to make their stick stand out can be too much for my liking. Unfortunately, spray paint just doesn't hold up. I would def. like to remove blade graphics in the least. I hate them.

ok, now we've gone from removing 20g, to removing 60g to 30-45g and now it's whippier than before? That's what I love about the internet, people just making things up and others believing them.
