Story on Oates stick............

Adam Oates uses the shortest blade in hockey? When seen up close outside the dressing room of the Washington Capitals, the blade of Adam Oates's Sher-Wood model has only a small curve to it and looks like it suffered an encounter with a meat cleaver. About three-quarters of the way to the toe, the blade is truncated on a 90-degree angle. It appears as if the manufacturer simply knocked off early for lunch and forgot to finish Oates' stick. "Most of the guys laugh at it," says Oates, who's made a living feeding snipers such as Brett Hull, Cam Neely and Peter Bondra with the stubby stick. "They try to use it but they throw it away and say it's ridiculous, they say how do you use that thing or what are you doing with a kid's stick?"

How did the Weston, Ont. native arrive at such an unusual model? "It's funny but I used to have a rather long blade. What happened was I was in Boston and I got a shipment of sticks. But they were all cracked... broken close to the toe. I thought, okay, I don't want to waste them so I'll just cut them and use them for practices. So I took the saw and cut them off square at the end and used them in practice. Well, they felt okay. The balance in the stick shifted a little higher up the shaft. So I started using them in games, and I did okay. A while later I tried to go back to the old blade but it wasn't the same. Since then I've lengthened the shaft a little and Brett Hull taught me how to rocker the bottom of the blade."

I'm aware they're under the same family of brands...but Datsyuk has a head to toe Reebok deal and besides Crosby I'd say is the face of the brand, surprising to see him in anything other than Reebok.

Maybe he didn't feel like breaking in a new pair if his season was going to be over soon so he taped his skates to make them stiff?

It seems like that pair of skates is probably just really worn out and has lost a bit of stiffness. He had a small amount of tape on his skates during Game 7 against Boston as well:

Also, Chara was in the NXG skates during the WC, but not yet as of the above picture (pics are linked since they're kind of tall):

cant they just make him a stiffer skate

He probably didn't feel like breaking in a new pair during the playoffs or just for the WC's.

I would agree with this. The areas he has taped would increase support. Interesting that he does both the upper ankle and lower ankle. I don't think I've seen the lower ankle area taped before for on hockey skates. See it all the time on football players.

He goes back to the 5100 as well, instead of the Re-Akt.

I saw pictures from practice and he was wearing his white caps Re-Akt instead of the Russian helmet. Maybe just the only thing the team had to offer him.

I was curious about that too, whether he had a red Re-akt in his bag, or whether they hadn't worn the Winter Classic uni's since the Re-akt came out.

This year they actually wore white helmets with the Winter Classic jerseys so he only had a blue and a white Re-Akt.

Oh right, that makes sense. Have to wear white helmets with the white jerseys, of course.
