I play in a league with a bunch of NHLers that play or have played in the Sabres organization . Pat Kane even plays in it, seeing as he is from Buffalo .

I would but that pesky work thing gets in the way. 10 years ago I used to go to the Friday night sticktimes at Duluth. those were some fun skates. :)

I got a couple friends that play out there. One being a goalie, he told me one day he robbed Kane with a glove save that he shouldn't have made, that lead to Kane sniping him on the next 3 shots.

Yeah it's obviously a great skate during the offseason . Believe it or not, Kane's wrist injury happened playing in the league, but they covered it up saying he was hurt during the playoffs and just realized during the offseason. Nonetheless, it's awesome playing against Kane and just watching how good he is . haha

mindboggling to me why guys like Kane would play in beer leagues in the summer. Just takes one cowboy and his career could be over.

Indeed. In fact, I thought that most have/would have a clause in their contract prohibiting such behavior. Per your point, all it takes is one melon head that thinks it'd be funny/make a name for himself to clobber Kane (or, for that matter, someone who gets so furious because Kane made him look stupid that he corners Kane and beats him to a pulp).

Judging from some of his previous off-ice behaviour and how he got pissed that a rec league goalie made a glove save on him, I would say the Mr. Kane doesn't need help making himself look stupid.

Not sure of the veracity of this but a friend of mine told me the story of this high level pickup game in Vancouver that featured older ex-college and junior players(his brother being a former college player). A member of the Canucks ( not a star, some fourth line guy whose name I forget) asked if he could join them for a game as he was trying to get some extra ice time in the summer to get in shape. The players agreed and afterwards were all patting themselves on the back as they had only been a step or two behind this guy who was a current player in the NHL . They were still revelling in their almost pro-like speed and abilities when the Canuck, who had stayed on the ice for a bit to practice some stuff, came into the dressing room. As he thanked them for letting him play, he took off his jersey to reveal that he had been wearing a 40-pound weighted vest during the game.

I tried it once with a 12-pound vest a guy had at the rink and I was absolutely trashed. I can't imagine 40-pounds!

lmao...have you seen any players do this with skate weights?

on a side note, I have been getting to the arena early sometimes with my GF to watch her newphew's hockey camp (canlan ice sports in the GTA), and I always see players that play junior playing pick up. it's absolutely insane how good and effortless they make everything look.

Apparently alot of the NHL'ers that come to Toronto over the summer play @ canlan ice sports near York University.

No different from some knucklehead in training camp or another team's call-up during the season. No matter what sheet you're on there will be the risk of some guy looking to become famous.

NHL and AHL players are all in the A division at York University's canlan rink. I play in the A division at york and the last team we played had all 3 Pelech brothers on it (one who plays between AHL/NHL, one from the ECHL and one from the OHL)- plus another guy from the Dallas Stars organization. During the summer regular season its pretty relaxed. Now its the playoffs and they want to win, so the speed and skill jumps up a lot! Great league.
