2011-2012 Suspension thread

He deserves it he say the flyer player's number clearly and rammed him into the boards. Brendan Shanahan is clearly doing his job he wouldnt be there if he didnt play in the NHL.

Bourque isn't skating hard at all. Rene coasts right in and finishes a guy hard in the numbers while he is hunched over facing the boards. This is a textbook example of seeing the guy in a vulnerable position taking advantage of it. There is no legitimate reason to get your arms up and finish a guy in that position.

I was assuming that the replay was in slow motion? Based on the verdict, you guys are right and I was wrong. Another reason why I would never make it as a referee.

Engelland will be getting a hearing for his hit on Kruger last night. It looks like Kruger will be out tonight because of it. No penalty in the game, though to me it looked similar to a lot of head shots that got players 5 and a game misconduct this year. Two or three games off wouldn't surprise me.

I think you're right. I have to agree with the announcers that the suspensions so far aren't getting everyone's attention; they're going to have to make them longer. The head's going to go into the boards every time that kind of hit is above a player's center of gravity. This ain't rocket surgery.

Not a good yardstick. A hit can be very dangerous, and yet cause no injury in a specific instance. Or it can be hardly dangerous at all, and end the career of a very fragile player, by a fluke.

I still think the best way to handle suspensions would be to make them cumulative. Determine the suspension length for the current incident and then add it to all previous suspensions the player had over his career.

Not a bad idea. If a guy got 2 games for a check to the head and if he does it again then he gets a stiffer suspension of say 3-4 games plus another 2 for the first time he was suspended. Missing a game check or two here or there might not be a deterrent but if suddenly a guy is looking at losing 10 games or more, well, then he "might" think twice. GMs may start thinking harder about roster decisions if they believe a guy could be lost for a big chunk of games for being stupid.

Even if you don't make each subsequent suspension more severe and a standard check to the head or hit from behind is only two games, the fourth and fifth offenses really start to hit hard. It would also make a guy like Andy Sutton (and his 8 suspensions) damn near unemployable.

Theoretically Shanahan adds extra games for players with a bad history. As treating this seriously is relatively new, we'll have to see how high he's willing to go.

Suggestions above remind me of sentence "enhancements" for repeat criminals, which are based on a similar theory.

Andy Sutton had seven previous suspensions, including one earlier this season and he got 8 total games for his last offense. That theory doesn't really hold up as far as I'm concerned.

That hit seemed pointless.

I don't know the rule, but I hope he has to recover from his injury and be available to play before he can serve his suspension.

I hate it when someone dumps a puck in and both guys would rather line each other up than actually try to play the puck. I'm a Hawks fan and I wouldn't object to suspending his dumb ass out for the rest of the season for a play like that. I hope Gilbert is ok and I'm glad to see karma is starting to catch up with Carcilo. Props to the Hawks announcing crew for not trying to sugar coat or play down his stupidity.

I told my wife "poetic justice" when I saw Carcillo injured on that play. I won't wish injury on anyone, but I wouldn't mind him being traded to the AA league on Alpha Centauri IV for the rest of his career.
