2011-2012 Suspension thread

I'd be surprised if something supplementary came out of that. I don't like the hit but it is so hard to tell intent on most of those.

It looks a lot worse than what Ovechkin did, and OV was suspended for two games.

I could see a couple of games for the sole fact it's Orpik. He's got a reputation and this doesn't do any good to it.

There is no chance they suspend Orpik, he plays for the Penguins

I heard from a friend that Dubinsky cup-checked Crosby last night. If this happened, has anyone seen a video?

I think I saw that the league already commented on it and said that there would be no supplemental discipline. Still a dumb move on his part, though.

Yep, i think so. Lots of head there, and Clifford doesn't seem to be dropping his head at the last minute or anything.

Although I thought Weber would get a game for sure, so who knows?

I really think they fudged the bucket by not suspending Weber. Sure, there was no injury, but I can't take the department of "player safety" seriously if blatant intent to injure goes unpunished.

A penalty and fine were assessed.

A penalty that never got served.

My whole beef with the no suspension thing is, aside from being a Wings fan, is the NHL stressed how much they wanted to end contact to the head but when someone grabs someone by the head and slams it into the glass, they see no need to do, what is essentially, nothing about it. Sure, he was fined, but what is $2,500 to someone who makes 8 million dollars this season? If a guy makes $40,000 a year, that is like fining him $12.50. Ouch.

Right, wrong or indifferent, I dont think this incident is in the spirit of the head contact they are looking to eliminate. Im fine with a fine.

More like the hit on Peverley

The league has been trying to build credibility on this issue, and they've severely damaged it with no suspension for Weber.

The conclusion here is painfully obvious -- angrily banging someone's head into the glass is not a big deal.

the problem with the fines being so low that they are practically useless is the fault of the nhlpa - i would imagine the nhl would like to have them a lot higher if they could

Agree. I've been impressed with the explanations I've heard for most of the incidents this year, but when non-hockey outlets are laughing at you, you have certainly screwed up. I was at Buffalo Wild Wings yesterday and I saw them discussing it on 2-3 non-hockey sports shows.
