How to shop for new skates after years of wearing Bauer supreme

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of Bauer 5000's. I am looking for a new pair of skates, and after shopping I am thoroughly lost. I play pick up and adult league. I have wide feet (EE) and want to stay with Bauer, but have no idea where to start. I would like a smooth transition. Thanks

Bauer Vapors and Bauer supreme. Guess the most intimidating part was the cost. There is so many different levels/models. I was happy with my 5000's. they are so old, they finally broke down. I was looking at the one 60...if that is right? 300.00 for a pair of skates seems fair to me. What is the main difference between a Vapor and a supreme? Bauer's website is pretty vague. I know skaters with Vapors and I blow their doors off "some" of them... so I know Vapors don't make you that much faster..lol.

Honestly, they all felt hard. My daughter plays and has Vapors and loves them. The supreme 60 felt good, I guess I want a good overall skate like my 5000's. But I am guessing today's skates are made better. I don't skate 4 times a week like I used to. The vapor's where uncomfortable, but they usually all are until you break them in. Is the Bauer supreme 60 a good skate?

Depends on how often you play. If you want something that is going to be similar to that 5000 when you bought them look at the one70 or one80. Vapor skates have the same last as the Supreme skates pre-8090 (read: you're skates) so I'd look there as well, specifically at the X5:0. I take it you're going to be looking for a pair that is going to last 15-20 years? The one60, unless you're light on your skates and skate once a week will not hold up. Also don't be afraid to try on CCM/Reebok/Graf/Easton skates if available.

Specific models or whereabouts to look at: Easton EQ40, Easton S12/S17, Graf 700 series, Reebok 8K, CCM U+ 10. Those models will be quite similar to what you have in terms of quality. For skates, get what fits best, you shouldn't have discomfort when trying them on.

Fit is the key, the vapor and supreme do not fit the same type of feet. Unfortunately many LHS's don't really understand this and don't steer customers in the right direction.

Thanks for the info. I will be going back to the store in the next couple of days. I love the feel of CCM's, but I would need the tuuk holder or have the blade machined to match Bauer .

If I were you I'd either go with the flexlite line or wait an extra couple of months and go with the nexon line. (next spring)

The advantage of the flexlite is that the top of the line skate isn't that expensive, they are very quick to break in and they are not as stiff as the vapor & supreme lines. I'd definitely give it a try..

it was just so he could see what nexon line is gonna look like. why should I take it down?

Because there have been plenty of warnings here about not doing that.

Why is Bauer starting a new line. Isn't Vapor and supreme doing well enough? After some shopping today it seems like older skater's go with supreme and younger with vapors. I found a retailer with an old pair of 8090's without holders/blades. Had them slap on some Tuuk holders/blade's...Great Skate! spent hour and half on ice tonight and had no problems. will get the maximum edge put on them tomorrow. Thanks for all the great info.
