NHL stick lengths.

I've never seen a penalty assessed due to an illegal stick. At this point....it would just be outright embarassing were a team to be penalized for it as I don't think that rule has changed in quite some time.

The curve limit was changed coming out of the lockout. I don't recall a single illegal stick penalty since then.

Correct. Maple Leafs / Senators.

It was due to his pointy toe shape.

Having owned several of his more recent pro-stick sticks - the toe he uses now is legal. The depth of the curve and stick length is not! :)

.... For skill development I personally think that staying away from overly long sticks is a good idea, shorter stick can help teach you good habits (encourages a deep knee bend, easier to learn to stick handle with, encourages you to defend with positioning/skating as opposed to reaching all the time).

****That's not even that long considering how tall he is. ****

Correct...but stand beside someone who is quite a bit taller or shorter than you, and compare hand heights with your arms hanging by your sides. The difference isn't as much as you would imagine as the taller person also has longer arms.

However, with with your arms hanging down at your side, you're holding your stick at around a 45 degree angle. So 1 inch in hand height translates to a little over 1.4 inches in stick length.

Here's an article on a subject, Cal Clutterbuck and his stick, http://fortheloveofhockey.com/?p=412. The reason I looked it up is that I saw a few of his pro stock sticks at a LHS. The stick was just above my eyebrow level and I presume he does not cut it. Let alone the blade was a wicked banana, putting Ovie's to shame...

Yeah once I read that I didn't believe any of the rest of it.

article was from june 2009. gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say semin possibly used a whippier stick back then.

Apparently a 112 flex semin stick is a wet noodle...

Tim Thomas could probably vouch for that after that shot in game 4 from semin

A guy on PHEW (one of the few reliable ones) had several Semin pro stock one90s and one95s and they were all 102 flex.

Straight down the length of the shaft until you run out of shaft.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26286

So is this the proper way to measure a stick's length and/or how the manufacturers measure?

I typically measure straight down to the bottom of the blade, at the heel, where it would sit flat on the ice. Is that an improper way to measure because of lie, rocker, etc.?
