Late Game at 11:10 PM tonight - tips?

Recommended Posts

I have a beer league game at 11:10 tonight (first game of the season, pumped to finally start), first time I've ever played this late. Normally our games are around 7 or 8:30. Anyone have any suggestions for staying fresh that late? Its an outdoor league, so that might help a little bit. But I cant help but think I'm not going to be nearly as aware or sharp as I would for an earlier game.

Power nap. We use to have 12:00 games in University league and a nice 20-30min power nap around 8:00-8:30, then have couple pieces and fruit and loaded up on water. Would always be good to go.

Staying well hydrated throughout the day, having a little more than recommended I found made a major difference and was easy to do.

Naps are a huge help for most guys. I always drink a coke in the locker room before late games. It's not the healthiest option, but it is my normal pre-game routine at this point. It really helps me get moving.

When I play that late, I like a good 1hr - 2hr nap (2 hr is better) coffee before the game (or 5 hr energy drink) and BOOM good as new.

I usually just have a diet pop on the way to my games. I agree that this is also not the healthiest option but it works for me. Also it is not enough caffeine to have a major crash or a sleepless night afterwards.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. Ill probably just eat something and grab a nap before hand, then either some 5 hour or a red bull or something before the game (I know, not super healthy).

I definitely wouldn't go for something hyper-caffeinated like Red Bull - if you need a pick-me-up, a little goes a long way. Especially if you're the sort of person who feels amped for a little while after a game, caffeine may not be a good idea.

I'm usually more of a night person by nature, so late games are not generally a problem for me, but usually I try to have a little something to eat (toast with nutella or peanut butter, or something like a powerbar), and often the walk to the rink wakes me up and gets my brain going. (the latter isn't an option for most people, I realize). Being active in the game itself will probably get your head and body in gear.

I agree. It's just something to get you started, your adrenaline will pick up and get you through the game.

My routine for those late games is dinner around 6P. Nap around 8P for about 30min-40min (any longer and you risk hitting that deep REM sleep). I will usually eat a banana (or whatever fruit I have in the fridge). Then when I get to the rink I always have one of those gatorade pre-game pouches. I've found I notice a big difference through the game, but have no problem going to sleep by the time I get home.

And I will be doing this routine tonight. Fun.

We have a few 11:45 beer league games and a power nap helps. I usually eat at about 6 ish. Once at the rink, I get woken up by the coldness and then just watch a few games and I'm good to go.

I'll let you know how all this works for me tomorrow. we have a 1030 p.m. game and well, I get up at 5 or 6 with the kids. Power nap might be in order but coffee might be good as well. Thanks for the tips. I have been wondering how I was going to go about this.

I use this stuff before the game. I drink it 30 minutes before start time, and it helps incredibly with not only my focus but endurance and energy as well. http://www.amazon.com/Vega-Sport-Pre-Workout-Energizer-Lemon/dp/B005MJCL2O/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1352824340&sr=1-2&keywords=vega+sport+pre-workout+energizer I am very caffeine sensitive, but this does not bother me at all like other caffeinated products do. Its also more than just caffeine.

I started using it for running this summer, and literally it cuts a substantial amount of my per mile time, so i decided to give it a try in hockey, and now i use it before every game.

Wish I would have followed a couple of these tips before my last late one. Took a nap too late and too long. When I woke up up I felt more unrested than before I fell asleep. Didn't want to drink anything with caffeine for fear of not being able to fall back to sleep when I got home. Ended up skating pretty poorly.

If you buy a bottle of coke, you don't have to finish the whole thing. Just enough that you start to feel it. I really wish the cans/bottles were more like 6-8 ounces.

You can find them in some of the larger grocery/warehouse stores -at least the bottles I know for sure.

If you want cans, here you go:

I'm just barely old enough to remember the 6.5 oz. bottles. They still had them down South when I was a kid, even though in the Chicago area they were already moving to 16 oz. and 8-packs.

Thanks, but it's much easier (and cheaper) to just drink less than a full 16 or 20 ounce bottle.

I'm not nearly as old and I remember my grandfather buying cases of the small bottles for me as a kid. The larger packages were still far more common though.

the small cans are common down here (socal). The coke products are tall and skinny like that, and the pepsi cans are short and fat.

I'm seeing more and more of them in grocery stores here, but the prices are usually higher than for the larger size containers.

I've got warrants older than you.

I could have been a bit more gentle there, sorry about that. I'm pretty sure the statute of limitations has expired on most of my misdeeds.

I have had some late games lately and the Gatorade "prime" formula has been working wonders for me, power naps are key as well.

I had just downed one of those when our captain came into the room to tell us our game was cancelled. I'll try again next week...

Late game...you want late games play a tourney in Vegas, I've seen them run around the clock. Try to get awake for a 2:00am game. Most guys who play the late games (or really early games) are out of towners who show up S@#t faced from partying all night. There is only so much coffee can do
