Classic Gear from '72 and '74

Recommended Posts

A pair of leather gloves cost $64.79 and a pair of goalie leg pads cost 43.99 (THEN).

If the industry followed this pricing model (TODAY), Franchise gloves would be $1600!!!! I could retire!

I was just thinking the same thing. $65 gloves back then was huge dollars. Serious ballers only, please.

Edit: thanks to the wonders of the internet, I see that $65 in 1974 is equal to about $300 in todays dollars. Just imagine a department store today trying to sell $300 gloves.

Did people really wear those external...mouthguards?

Yup. I had nearly all the gear shown there. Loved those Lange skates. They were like ski boots but protective and had actual lateral support.

There's a guy here in Orlando in his late 60s who has a pair of those Langes. They have Tuuk C+ on them - he's worn them since the 70s. He played at Michigan back in the day.

Every few years or so he'd come in for new steel, which involved unmounting/remounting the holder. I told him that I can drill access holes so that the holder didn't have to be removed - with the boot being plastic, the rivet holes would stretch out.

It was the most nervous I've ever been while working on boots - no idea what would happen once I put the drill to it. Coupled with the fact that he says once those skates break, he will retire from hockey. They held up.

Me too. I had several pair of those as I grew out of them. Good protection and even better warmth. I always had two pair of the liners and could swap them at intermission. Nothing like skating in a -30 rink and being able to pull on nice warm liners.
