How to spend $1000

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Long time reader here, first time poster (just signed up).

I'm from Australia and as you can imagine, hockey gear here is ridiculously expensive so people tend to buy it from the USA and get it shipped over. Shipping is also pretty damn expensive so I'm looking to place 1 single order to get a new set of EVERYTHING as my gear is getting pretty old and worn out (about 6 seasons in current gear).

I know there are plenty of threads about what gear to get, but my question is about how to spend my budget ($1000, not including shipping). This is what I've come up with so far, but if you guys think I should spend more in some areas and less in others please let me know. The budget is flexible too, so if you think it's not enough in general then I'll happily pay extra.

Total: $1000

Equipment: $800

-Skates: $230
-Helmet + visor: $130 ($70 + $60)
-Stick: $120
-Gloves: $80
-Pants: $70
-Shoulder pads: $65
-Shin guards: $60
-Elbow pads: $45
Accessories: $160
-Equipment bag: $50
-Compression shorts & cup: $40
-Skate re-edger + stone: $20
-Stick tape x 5: $15
-Mouth guard: $10
-Skate blade covers: $10
-Socks: $10
-Grip/Butt end: $5
Training pucks: $40
-Green biscuit: $10
-Smart hockey training ball: $10
-Swedish wooden training ball: $10
-Weighted training ball: $10

Any help/advice is much appreciated! If you'd like to suggest gear at these price points then feel free as well :P
Thanks, from Australia!

Looks workable. If youre not too picky about brand/color you might save more on dime items. How often do you play? If its 2-3 times a week I might up your skate budget to the $329-359 range, just to maximize comfort and longevity. Good luck!

Do you have a particular affinity with the training balls? If not then I could save money there. The GB is great though, so imo if you were to pick one, I'd look there. I agree with Buzz and wrangler on everything else.

Agreed on upgrading the skates, except if you're looking at top of the line on clearance.

I'd also recommend contacting kevin (http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php?/user/1082-fatwabbit ) and other folks in australia for doing a combined order and trade locally if you can.

Also, buy 2piece setups, you will get better long term return on investment.

Skip the visor, and spend the same amount on a helmet/cage combo.

Especially if he's playing roller hockey outside in the Australian heat. A cage will offer MUCH better airflow. Plus, like Chadd said, a cage combo for a helmet is usually an additional $20, not the $60 for a visor.

What do you mean by dime items? I play twice a week (one game + one 2 practice). Will definitely up the skate budget. Thanks!

Not particularly. Being in Australia, ice time is hard to get. My skating is great but I'd like to improve on my stickhandling so I figured training balls would be the best way to go. I might just go GB + 1 ball.

Skip the visor, and spend the same amount on a helmet/cage combo.

I used to play with helmet/cage combo and switched to visor and much prefer it. I'll see if I can find a helmet/visor combo. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! I'll PM him and see if he or anyone else is interested doing a big combined order.

Thanks for all the advice guys - really appreciate it! Keep it coming :D

EDIT: If it makes any difference, my current skates are Nike Quest V12 (http://www.hockeyworld.com/common/images/products/large/31-3243.jpg). I can't remember how much these were but I definitely don't want to downgrade!

That was supposed to read "sale" items (damn you, autocorrect).

Not sure what size you are, but HM at the moment has good sale prices on Flexlites 4.0 skates, X:40's and Ultra G5s. All of which would be a solid bargain.

again, agreed 100% on the flexlites, I'd add EQ50 as well.

If you can wear a 6.5 or 7 easton the eq5 at HM is a lot of bang for the buck. eq 40 and 50 are on sale everywhere but some folks mention durability issues though a number of guys I play with have had theirs for a while and love them.

Mate, am based in Brisbane. I might be able to help you with some gear that I dont need/use anymore. That way you can direct your money to better skates, better helmet.

Unfortunately none of those come in my size. My shoe size is a US 9. Do you think the CCM U+ 12 are good at this price point? http://www.hockeymonkey.com/ccm-hockey-skates-uplus-12-sr.html

The EQ50 (http://www.hockeymonkey.com/easton-hockey-skates-synergy-eq50-sr.html) are also available in my size. Which would be a better buy?

The extra 20% off clearance items right now is a nice bonus as well

Didn't notice that - thanks! I might look into buying all of my gear from the clearance selection.

Whereabouts in Aus are you from ? Melbourne here

Newcastle here. I've been to Melbourne once and loved it!

It also depends on how much of a hurry you are for the gear. All of what you are after will appear in sale forums or ebay at some time in the future within the budget you have, for example you can get a top of the line helmet off ebay for that price (Bauer React, rbk 11k). So if you can wait a while and have the time to look then this may also be a way for you to get good priced top of the line gear. If sellers will not ship int'l then look at using a forwarding company like shipit, bongo etc. I can't recommend who to use to Australia (whatever you do don't use viaddress) but if you ask around or google the company then you should find something good.

I have kitted out myself, family and team mates this way as, like you, gear is really expensive in our country.

And a word of advice if you do go this way - make sure you communicate with the seller and ask them how they will pack the item for shipping, it's cheap to ship stuff in the States and I have found people think it's fine to put one stick into a box the size of a coffin. Explain that you are getting the stuff onforwarded overseas and you need it packed in as small a package as possible, this will keep down the shipping costs of the international leg.

the other thing to remember is hockey monkey etc will not post you any bauer/easton stuff..

sometimes they are not so worried about reebok/ccm... but at the same time ive had other places refuse them also...

I would suggest with sticks maybe do a group buy with people at your rink etc. Its what we usually do (only usually take 2 people as 6 sticks should only be $100 ish in postage.

Ill pm you some other info

I didn't see you post what level you're playing at, but if it's the typical beer\adult league play you might be able to save some money on shins\shoulders\elbows. I just picked up some real lightweight Sherwood stuff (5030) for right around $90 US. That's an extra $80 for you to throw at some better skates.

The Tron visor is great if you're going down the visor route. Might be able to get yourself a couple with your visor budget, or just one and move the extra cash to a better helmet or skate.

Not in any hurry at all. I've been telling myself to get new gear since the start of last season, so I can definitely wait for deals :) I originally didn't consider this because I thought it would be cheaper to buy everything and ship it together, than to buy individual pieces and have them sent separately.

Hmm that sucks about Bauer/Easton not shipping to Australia! Maybe I can use a mail-forwarding service. Thanks for the PM!

Yep, I'm playing typical beer/adult league (not much contact). General consensus seems to be better skates so I will definitely upgrade the budget!

also remember anything over $1000 TOTAL you will be charged with GST etc before you can receive the goods

I wonder if this is $1000 before or after shipping costs. Worst case I can split my order into 2.

Will have a look into this!

Thanks everyone :)

It's 1000 minus shipping, so you can have $999 worth of gear + shipping but the moment it goes over 1000 for just the products you pay the price

Tron visors are great, they have some on the Australian store but i think they are twice as much to begin with

If you can take your time then eBay and slow shipping from the US to Aus is definitely the way to go. I've kitted out my whole family this way with top of the line gear at a fraction of the cost of new. You just have to hunt every day, for example my current gear is SE16 ice skates, CA9 inlines, Rbk 9k elbows, 11k shins, CCM pro and X60 girdles, CCM V10 shoulders, S17 helmet, RS and Total one sticks and a host of gloves. I reckon I have paid about 40% of the new cost for all of this, and that's including shipping, but it has taken me a few years to put it all together. Made some mistakes with sizes and gear I didn't like but I ended up selling it on to other players, it's also a good way to get your hands on a lot of different stuff and finding out what you really like.
