Does anyone else here hate getting there skates sharpened?

Victoria BC. It just seems like 30 percent of the time no matter who u use they screw something up. Or they just can't seem do duplicate what they do each time.

Since working in a shop, and learning to do my own, I hate giving them to other people. I usually don't get exactly what I want, just because I want a 9/16 and not a "standard." Luckily, I just moved to the Detroit area, and so did JR, so there's someone near by who I can rely on. Not to mention I'll be able to get an FBV more than once a year.

I don't hate it at all. I just go downstairs into my basement and do them when I need it. It's been very stress free since I bought a Blackstone. If you are unhappy, get your own machine.

I dont hate getting my skates sharpened properly, but lately it has been a coin toss too. Very frustrating. Either too sharp, no egde or left and right feels different.

I missed a game a few weeks ago because of a bad sharpening (Athletic Republic in 4 Ice in Montreal, never ever get your skates sharpened there, all you will get is a bad sharpening and attitude from the punks, first and last time for me).

I am at a point where I have simply had it with young kids that dont know what they are doing or dont care that they mess up your night, so I purchased a magic stick and try to make best use of it and sharpen my skates the least possible, until I buy a home skate sharpener and never have to sharpen my skates at a LHS EVER!

Ummm, my sharpenings here in VT were a total hit or miss. Been using noicingsports for about 4 months, could not be happier. Easy to mail in/get back blades, turnaround time about 5 or 6 days. Using FBV and every cut is perfect and the same. Check out jimmy in this board...well worth it...

Blackstone X02's owner answer to that might be: ROFL

if you have the budget for it or if you play often enough, get your own machine sir. Worth every penny. The last time i ever got unhappy about a sharpening goes back to my nonblackstonex02owningera's days. (3 years ago). i never looked back.

I'm on my third guy right now trying to get my new Makos in order. This new guy is telling me the last guy didn't even profile my skate, even though i was charged for a profiling

he put up a 10 radius ruler/template to the blade and it looked like only two areas of the blade were touching on the whole skate? the hollow was also not what i asked for. WTF

sigh, this guy said he wont charge me until i'm satisfied. we shall see.

Yup, living in Burlington, VT and the local skate sharpening is a joke. Reminds me of those old white automated skate sharpening machines they would hide at the back of the rink, but if you were desperate... Might try to send them away. Luckily, I find the 20K blades last fairly long.

what is the difference between a classic radius rocker vs a classic glide surface profile?

a buddy of mine just got a 50/75 which i don't understand what that could be in terms of normal foot radiuses ?

75 mm of glide surface. 50 mm of that is forward of blade center. It would be about I am thinking around an 10-11 maybe an 11-12 combo radius. It is a fair amount of blade.

a 20/40 is roughly a 9ft N radius

My new Mako blades are so awfully screwed up i'm really pissed. The first guy i tried getting it profiled with totally screwed up, the second guy made an honest attempt but ultimately took so much off the front toe of the skate.... I should have stayed on the manufacturers profile for a while before tinkering.

I'm going to post a pic later this morning cuz the profile looks off. Both guys did the profiling by hand with a template. I'm starting to think the automatic profiling machine like CAG is a much better option for me considering the lack of talent guys in this area have for doing quality work. Maybe the Makos are throwing these guys off?

Anyways, what's the consensus on free hand profiling vs the machines?

I had written this before that they are not the easiest to do that being said they should have messed them up that bad using the templates you just have to measure from a different spot?

I don't know. It just feels like the guy ruined the stock pitch, and the toe feels different.

Take a look... am i crazy? He said this is a 10 radius. Doesn't seem like a ten to me at all.

Ok, let's clear something up, you CAN'T measure radius with your eyes. The only way to know if that is a 10' radius is to run it over a 10' radius bar. The toes do not get a 10' radius, radius is applied to middle 2/3rds of the runner. The toe and heel radius are usually not altered but they are different than the working radius in the middle. Generally, the toe/heel radius are not altered. The toe radius in that pick does not look out of ordinary.
