What's So Great About 4 Roll Gloves?

Recommended Posts

Why do so many people prefer 4 Roll gloves over a more anatomically fitting glove? What advantages do they have, other than a more traditional fit?

they are usually a bit more comfy and cover more of the hand, a lot of times having a wider cuff.

i went with the franchise bc i have a wide hand and the anatomical gloves now really are too snug on my hands for comfort.

its all subjective. To me, 4 rolls feel awkward and uncomfortable. I prefer more tight fit around the hands.

I feel that the protection is 100 times better. I have almost always used 4-rolls, but then when the NBH Vapor XXXX's came out, I bought a pair to try out. Turns out every time I used them, my hands somehow always got banged up. Went back to 4-rolls and didn't have that issue. A good pair or a good fitting pair of 4-rolls are tanks...

It's a simple solution to the basic problem: protect the hand, while allowing it to rotate, pitch, open and close; so it's hard to improve on that design. Even the back-hand segmenting of a lot of the narrower or tapered gloves isn't all that different from 4-rolls.

For me, it's about comfort. The anatomical gloves just don't feel as nice on my hand. This is purely subjective. I find the OPs point about "so many people" preferring them a little strange tho. I don't know about you, but when I walk into a LHS and look at the glove wall, it seems that 80% of it is anatomical style gloves. obviously somebody out there prefers that style or they wouldn't make so many...

I use Reebok 852T pro stock gloves and Bauer 4-rolls. For me its a comfort thing as well as I feel i have better range of motion in the glove to stickhandle. Its more or less preference. The tights gloves for me anyway feel like my hands are in a vise.

4 rolls are usually more popular with the older players as its more a traditional style and one that many grew up with using. A lot of the younger kids these days and people that are new to the sport tend to prefer the tighter fitting gloves.

Our sales are definitely weighted more toward anatomical gloves.

another thing is that 4-rolls seem to be "ready to go" out of the box and require no break in period, and pros like that. And in short they're sweet, girls love a guy with 4 rolls. While we are on the topic, I cannot wait to see the AX1 gloves, RIP to the Franchises, quite possibly the greatest of the 4-rolls.

Love my custome franchises. no frills, btu just real solid, pretty damn light and protective as anything else out there. ive taken so many pucks off my hands and felt nothing.

I think they look cool, not like the space gloves like Bauer and Reebok offer. Or the new weird finger things on the easton mako gloves, what the hell are those?

And I guess I like a wide open wrist, as far as fit goes. Looks are definitely more important though.

I am currently in the process of getting rid of my 4-rolls as for me there is too much room at the edge of the hand (between the wrist and the pinky) in most gloves. Coming from "huge" 4-rolls (Sande, R10, Remix) the "tiny" XXXX, S19 and Luxe just feel like they offer more of a direct connection in between my hands and stick.

I find that 4 rolls take a bit more time to break in, actually. Not all, but most.

It's actually one of the things I appreciate about them apart from fit for my wide hands. There's something much more comfortable about a broken-in sturdy glove than an artificially softened glove engineered to feel nice in the store.

To me, anatomically fitting gloves that feel soft and great on their first skate tend to feel flimsy and worn out after a couple of months. When I break in a pair of 4-rolls after a few weeks, the sturdy comfort lasts and even improves until the palms blow out or they're showing foam all over. I think 4 rolls tend to get better with age. A glove that's soft out of the box has seen its peak comfort on its first skate in my experience.

According to warrior they "bake" their gloves to break them in a little. I found my franchises to be as comfy as anything. And this is coming from someone who hates 4 rolls forever.
