gosinger 122 Report post Posted September 18, 2013 As there is no BioSteel available in my parts of the woods I made my own, getting the ingredients and mixing myself. 20g Maltodextrin (carbs) 10g assorted minerals (covers about 40% of daily suggested iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphor, and so on) drink mix 10g L-Glutamine powder 5g BCAA powder (50% Leucin, 25% Isoleucin, 25% Valin) Created the "mixture" with a trusted source in sports supplements, and so far I am pretty pleased :)

kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted December 28, 2013 I agree, regular Gatorade is too sweet for games. I really enjoy "G2" though. I honestly think it tastes better. Unsure about such drinks as "Powerade Zero" though, because aren't sports drinks designed to have some amount of sugar in them?

Helps water it down and keeps it cold. Drinking that plus actual water during the game makes me feel pretty good throughout the whole game.
thejackal 46 Report post Posted December 29, 2013 As for temperature, in China we would often drink lukewarm water even when doing exercise in 35 degrees and 80% humidity+ weather. One drink recipe Ive used is water with a few pinches of salt mixed with lemon juice and a little honey. Coconut water is great as well. The NHL charter flights I go on occasionally stocks powerade, powerade zero and coconut water

AlphaSierra 1 Report post Posted December 30, 2013 My body has been on the bad end of the hydration experiment for years in a profesional setting. I like coconut water for the potassium, better than a banana. Gatorade for the sodium. And water for general hydration needs. You can actually flush your body with too much water and that is as bad as dehydration. It took some playing around with to find how my body responded the best, and or knowing what I needed.I try and maintain a healthy level of hydration with water on a day to day basis, add in a coconut water the morning of an event, and diluted gatorade durring.I was also exposed to a product called Ceralyte which is a rice based, no sugar "sports drink" type drink that supposedly absorbs faster into the system than traditional sports drinks. Tastes aweful! But I have to say that the results impressed me.

This is a more "put together" version of a drink mixture a personal trainer buddy told me about. I'll +1 on it's effectiveness.
Stewie 721 Report post Posted January 4, 2014 i drink coconut water a lot. Its what I have seen best results with. I also use this more natural version of a gatorade type powder by a brand called Vega that works pretty well and tastes alright, without it being super sugary. Larry54 243 Report post Posted January 5, 2014 Sometimes before only, others during. The potassium really helps my muscles rebound during longer skatingI usually take a timed release potassium tablet an hour or so before a game, and just drink water during the game. It keeps things simple.

tareatingrat 4 Report post Posted January 10, 2014 I've been liking the BioSteel stuff.Found when I was dieting or trying to cut some weight, my hands would just go to pot on the ice.Since I've been drinking BioSteel, I seem to have a little more energy in the tank, and my hands aren't nearly as bad when I'm eating clean.Could be placebo, but whatever it is, seems to be helping. AllCanadian 2 Report post Posted January 11, 2014 Biosteel is fairly expensive for what it is. I understand the appeal for organic freaks or those who are actually drug tested for sport. Since I'm neither I have choices. For an amino acid drink there are much cheaper options with nearly identical profiles (99% of what's on the market is just 2:1:1+Electryloytes and a B complex) like Xtend, Aminolast, AminoX etc etc. $60 for thirty servings is double the market standard and I don't like being locked into only having one flavour option. tareatingrat 4 Report post Posted January 11, 2014 Fair enough. I'm not advocating for it like it's the be all end all. Anecdotally, it works for me. Logically, I know I'm probably not working hard enough or long enough to justify anything but water. The same could be said for buying expensive gloves, or getting an FBV cut on my skates. I do it because I feel I perform better.I won't pretend it's worth it, empirically, especially because it's expensive. I just read some people liked it and thought I'd give it a shot. Seems to work for me. YMMV.
IPv6Freely 2092 Report post Posted January 12, 2014 This, for most drinks for most people. Probably true. Won't stop me from doing it, though. Regardless of whether it's a placebo or its actually doing something, either way it's the end result that matters.
