Ankle Brace

Recommended Posts

Has anyone played with an ankle brace? I'm looking for something I can wear in my skates just for a bit of extra support. Obviously that means it has to be pretty low profile.

I'm looking at things like:

Obviously some of these are going to be more supportive than others, but at the same time the more supportive ones are less likely to fit in my skate.

On the other hand, its possible that my skate boots will be plenty supportive enough without adding anything extra. Easton Mako for player skates (much looser) and VH for goalie skates (much more form fitting, but shorter).

I can't help with a brace, but have you thought about taping your ankle? I've done this a few times in baseball cleats and once or twice in skates for minor sprains. It would take up almost no extra space in the boot and you can adjust the support to your liking with a little extra or little less tape. It only takes maybe 5 minutes to do when getting ready. You can find how to videos with a quick Google search.

That's actually a really good idea. And if I taped over the sock then I don't have to worry about pulled leg hair, assuming that will still work. Otherwise I could probably use the grip tape I use for my stick grip.

They actually sell a pre wrap to keep the glue off the skin and makes it really easy to cut off after you're done. It's similar to hockey grip tape just comes on a bigger roll and is wider. I wouldn't recommend taping over the sock, it may slide a little and you risk cutting the sock if you cut the tape off

I've seen that stuff in the band-aid section of Target before. That's probably my best bet as far as getting it to fit inside my boot. Thanks!

a few years ago I had a really bad ankle sprain that still bothers me so I need a little extra support both in the gym and on the ice. I have about 4 or 5 of these and they work great!

Thank you! No problems wearing that in your skate? There's a few similar ones out there. Not a ton of support, but just enough.

I was about to recommend one of these as well. I used one of these after a ankle sprain and it worked great. If you loosen the skate up a bit more when putting it on your foot, it will slide right over and not move the brace. Then tighten the skate normally. Just don't overdo it or you may make your foot numb because of the extra material you normally don't have in there. Good luck!

That particular model? I was looking at some of the Shock Doctor options (neoprene) or the EC3D product looks really appealing as well:

That one probably works good too and has more support higher up the leg.  The one that shoeshine boy posted is like a $4.99 brace you get at like Target or CVS or something. That's what I used.

ah, gotcha! Yea I think if this one will work, it's what I'll get. Some compression higher up isn't a bad thing for me, especially after having a blood clot in my calf. I also considered getting a compression sleeve for the calf as well, just in case (and to wear while flying).

I use something similar to this. Its nice because you can play around with it to get more lateral support on one side or the other if needed. No problems fitting into a skate either.

That's actually the exact one I already have that I wore after my walking boot came off. I'm shocked you can get it in your skates.

After I sprained my ankle really bad (thanks, shitty ice), I wore one of the cheap CVS things like Bakum posted for a bit. Even though it's low-profile and not ridged, I felt like my skate didn't fit as close. I was glad when I felt comfortable enough to move away from it.

The first time skating without it, I definitely didn't feel as secure, but I think my ankle ended up building support and strength better once I moved on from the brace.

Indeed. I expect it to not be especially great feeling and look forward to doing away with it as quickly as possible.

I only wore the brace @Fire Walkerposted for a short time, as the orthopaedic doctor said wearing it would delay strengthening of the ankle, which makes sense.

That all being said, I still think I'd appreciate a bit of a confidence boost when I first try to skate. I'd rather try it and hate it and never identify it again then to go out there more timid than necessary. For what they cost, compared to how much I've spent on other things for this broken ankle, I might as well try.

I have no problems fitting the knit brace in my skate. I wear Nike soccer socks to play in so I usually put the brace on over the sock rather than under it. there is a slight difference in feel between the 2 ankles but after a few minutes I don't even notice it at all.

Nice, okay cool. We'll see how this one I ordered feels. I expect it to feel different but I also expect a weak ankle from it being recently broken to also feel different ;)

Also worth mentioning for those who don't know me: I'm a goalie, so I don't need to worry too much about speed and crossovers and such, but at lot more worry about stabilization and getting up from the butterfly. Not sure if that's better or worse!

Couldn't see it on amazon when I first looked. This is the exact one I use. Its missing the bottom part of the boot.

Ah, no bottom piece. Interesting. Though it's more the criss-cross straps that I don't think would fit in a boot very well. Are you still wearing it?

I wore the ASO brace and still have it. Wouldn't recommend it for hockey as it adds too much girth to the ankle making the boot fit funny. I'd wrap it with tape if you need extra support or (and I hate to say it) take some time off and strengthen the ankle properly.
