Fedorov's Inno 1100 from the 2002 skills comp

Recommended Posts

I've seen this picture of Fedorov taking a 101mph slapshot in the 2002 skills competition, his stick is literally almost flexed in half. I've always been curious as to what flex he was using, is he use a whippy stick which results in that much flex or is he using a stiff shaft but he's just so strong it flexes that much. Anyone know what flex he was using?

lol, notorious you're way off he uses an extremely stiff shaft, there was 2 people before you who say stiff but than you say extremely whippy? What ive seen is he uses 200-220 flex.

but think about this......

this is an example

if a player (lets say his name is joe shmoe) uses a 160 flex (lets just say).....the length of the stick is the average length, like 60 inches or around there......and the player is SUPER strong (this dude can bench like 600, lets just say)......then wouldn't the stick's flex feel the same for joe shmoe and an average guy who uses a 80 flex??

another example.....

Zedno Chara uses like a 130 flex...........but his stick is long as an anaconda so his stick would feel like an 80 flex in an average stick wouldnt it?

so what im trying to say is I dont think it really matters what the flex is because the stick can be extremely stiff but it could feel like a rubber pole to the person that is wielding it.

Yes you are right. Chara using say a 100 flex would thinkg "whippy", while Hull would think "stiff". It's all in strength, size and prefrence. I doubt Federov believes his stick is an 80 flex in his mind. I started a pole a while ago asking for prefrences on flex, and didn't use numbers because an 85 flex to me, may seem a tad flexy, but for someone who is using a 55 flex it'll be stiff.

i have a 110 force flex but it feels like a 100 . now dont get me wrong im not a tank like some people (im about 5'10, 160) but the stick is quite long thats what gives it the 100 like feel i think.

isn't it possible that he used a whippier stick for the shot competition or is that against the rules?

It's possible and legal as far as the rules are concerned. But if someone uses stick A all the time then tries to shoot with stick B, they are likely not to have as good a shot because of the change in flex, blade, etc and what thier muscles aren't used to.

No rule whatsoever.

But there are guidelines..........

Check out this post by an ingenious forum member  :D , Flex Rule of Thumb

The most general rules are that the bigger/stronger you are, the higher the flex, smaller/less strong you are lower flex.

I saw Iafrate get interviewed one time after a Bruins game and he said he uses "Whatever the stiffest stick they give me". This makes sense. Would you rather hit a baseball with a bamboo stick, or a steel rod? When getting wrist shots and snap shots off, flex matters. The release speed will be much quicker. But in terms of pure power or hardness of shot, a stiff stick will yield a much harder force.

Look at all of the guys who have won the competition OR cracked 100mph. With the exception of Fedorov who used a two-pc stick, they have all been wood users (MacInnis, Iafrate, Blake, Souray, Aucoin)
