black296tuuk 3 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Yes I have had to do it a few times. There are two different wheels on most large sharpening machines. The one you use to sharpen goes like this ------. The one that goes like this | is used to grind the skate flat if it has deep nicks or a really uneven edge. Some people always crossgrind but most only use it when needed. You crossgrind the skate becasue he did not pay (no money= no edge)

I don't know what surface the coffee was spilled on (carpet/floor) but throwing the rag on the spill would be the best thing if it is a slippery floor. Virtually every rink/shop is like that to some degree. Thankfully, I get to make the call on who gets special treatment. I had a guy bitching at me tonight because I wouldn't sharpen his skates when I was leaving 45 minutes after the posted closing time. He asked for my managers name so I gave him one of my cards and asked if he wanted my home number as well. B)

KC83 2 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 JRI work in an area full of rich people and their spoiled kids...i work at a retail shop.. and people come in with their dogs and pretty much everything and anything imaginable... i get in situations where dogs take craps all over the floor and piss on clothes.. and parents pretty much DO NOT care... I usually ask them "if i came to your house and took a crap all over your carpet if you would care...?" they usually reply.. why does it matter ? and they go talk to a manager about me... and i tell them to fuck off.. i've gotten 3 warnings.. but never fired... I have a feeling that all these rich people are used to having their butler or nanny clean up after them... so i kinda get what you are going through right now, but if you have been doing enuf work for them.. and they see that... then there is no way that you should/could get fired... i threatened to quit a couple times.. and each time they offered me a raise :D just so i would stay... Guest Marcelo Cordoba Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Basically the store was slammed all morning and at one point I had 12 people waiting for various things. Guy comes in with a box of skates in one hand, another pair of skates in the other and holding a cup of coffee. I was honing a pair of skates and the guy spilled some coffee on the floor. I took my rag and tossed it on the floor where he dropped it. He gave me the skates, then said he'd be back in a couple of hours.I guess he picked up the rag and walked out and went to find a manager. He then told the manager that I threw a rag at him, he's not a punk kid and shouldn't be treated that way, and that he expects me to do them perfectly and he is NOT paying for any of it.He then comes back in the store and says "You know that rag you threw at me? Bob has it." Around 2:30 he comes back in. My afternoon guy is in, and i am helping out a customer. I told my guy what to do - if he doesn't pay, I will crossgrind the skates. If he does pay, thank him and tell him that his business is no longer welcome here. I marked the skates so that I know not to do them. He comes in, Craig hands him the skates, he takes off. I go "Not so fast. You need to pay." He starts talking again, dropping names of managers and whatnot. Then I tell him that I am going to crossgrind them. He is like "You're threatening me...I ain't no punk kid" and starts to walk off. I follow him and I find security and he's there screaming for a manager. The hockey director walks up and they start talking and whatnot, and of course, they tell me to go back to the store. Basically, the director lets him slide. The guy is going to write an email to the rink director, because he knows him (I guess this guy does some charity gig at the rink once a year) so I really do not know what is going to happen to me. I'm tired of getting shitted on there, so there is a good possibility I just might quit if I don't like what they tell me. Wrong forum :P

jimmy 194 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 JR, look for a very small retail shop for rent RIGHT across the street from the rink. The rent shouldn't be too much. Set up your own small sharpening business. You don't even have to sell equipment, just tape and accessories. If you are good, you will put the rink's shop out of business. Either that or they will beg you to come back. I'm not sure though that you could make a living off it in Orlando, not exactly the hockey capital. But even if you opened a few hrs a day. Another option is to sublease some space from an existing business, just a corner where you could set up some machines. Most retail shop close late afternoon, just when hockey is strarting. Yoy wouldn't interfere with their business, yet have cheap rent, perhaps $200 a month. Just a thought.
JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Orlando is hardly a hockey market. 4 years at the salary I am making right now means that I have zero savings. I don't think opening a store is really an option. If I can pick up a portable on the cheap I could make some money sharpening, but it won't pay the bills. Sticks of Fury 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Orlando is hardly a hockey market. Hey JR,I was looking at Epuck and guess where they are located....Layfatte, LA <---------Louisiana.Is that place more of a hockey market than Orlando? I don't think so. Go check out their website if you don't believe me.I think you have built up quite a good reputation here on Modsquad. Heck I even bought from MiracleStone because of your recommendation. And I NEVER buy from the Internet.
JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Nope. EPuck's a small shop and a big warehouse. I know that none of my reps that work that territory even bother to visit them.
prenny207 1 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 boys... as jr has already stated... he does not have the finances to open a small shop, how on earth is he gonna open an online store! warehouse and inventory would be huge dollars!and with the conditions of the hockey market right now, and all the online stores, he's not going to make much of a living with either type of business right now! black296tuuk 3 Report post Posted March 13, 2005 Everyone needs to understand what it takes to start and run a hockey shop of any type. You work on extremely tight margins trying to keep up with the Jones's (Giant, Monkey, Cyclone, Pirannis, GreatSkate). You have extremely knowledgeable customers (because of places like this). You have a general consumer that will always look for the cheapest price and puts little value on the service you provide. And you have a government that absolutely bends you over with things like payroll taxes and income tax. When everything is said and done you can hope to make 10% profit after you factor in rent and other expenses. The industry is bass ackwards with almost everything. It has a buy season that is exactly opposite (the new product comes out at the end of the season). You have booking terms that are designed not to help the small business, but yet the vendors think they are doing you a favor buy giving you 3 months to stretch out payment of your entire year’s worth of buying. You have a group of sales reps that are uninterested from years of not making any money. You have companies that focus on doing anything they can to try and grow their own profit margin without doing a single thing to help grow the sport at a grass roots level (Easton) and you have traditional Canadian companies that are so stuck in 1974 that they don't use a computer system or have a product catalog and when they do get a popular product they can't keep up with demand (Graf, Montreal/Takla, Muskoka, Eagle and Christian). You have an industry that is so screwed up that it can't decide where and when to have a trade show, so it has two that no one goes to either. With everyone consolidating soon you will be left with 4 or 5 major companies that will control the entire industry. There are basically only two types of stores left. The big money stores and the little mom and pop stores that are in business because they are passionate about the sport.Do you think that JR is in this to make money? He loves the sport and he enjoys being involved in the industry. Unfortunately he is in a bad spot and his bosses have no idea what a huge contribution he makes. He and the other Mods get no reward for putting up with our shit other than being able to groove with the other Hockey dorks like us. This board has more impact on the industry than anything has in years. EVERYONE reads it from all over the industry and they use your input to design new products but give nothing in return. It is essentially free market research and advertising for them and personally I think that if you read the board in the shadows you are a coward and you are hurting the industry even more by not contributing (props to Justin, Marcelo, and others who actually stand up and are counted)If you are thinking of getting into the Industry, run.....run as fast as you can and don't look back.I am driving the bitter bus!!!! Who's coming with me???JR and all the mods should know that we all support you and we appreciate all the hard work and dedication that you give the sport and the industry every day. Yea, ditto to everything you said. Easton sucks, but Bauer is the worse for us retailers. Didn't it suck that Bauer discountinued the Vapor VII, XII, XI skates after LESS than 1 year on the market! The Vapor VII stick too. They get us to stock them, then discontinue them and we are stuck holding the inventory that is immediately devalued when the model is discontinued. Then Bauer unloads all it's inventory to internet sites, who then sell the item for less than we paid wholesale. All those Bauer skates I have in stock are now worthless. No profit whatsoever, a big loss on each pair. And do you think they tell us when a model is being discontinued, Noooooo. Thanks Bauer!
