MAN THAT WAS A MISTAKE

yes thats the technique i used as well. I suggest also turning the cuff liner inside out and making sure you get all the nooks in there. I don't know how bad yours are but thankfully mine didn't have any black spots or staining. I just had some nice green fuzz on the surface

Ugh....haven't played in a couple weeks. Go out to my hockey closet to get something out of my bag and my friggin' custom Warriors are covered in mold. BOTH of them. Pissed. Beyond. Belief. I hang my gear out to dry after every time I play but we have had so much rain here in SoCal the last few days that I guess the moisture just built up.

I don't have a front-loading washing machine.....and I don't want to soak them in the same tub that my kids take baths in. Any ideas, guys? Should I just wash them in the washing machine and hang dry them? They are seriously covered in mold....to clean them by hand would take forever and I probably wouldn't be able to get every spot.

I wish you the best and hope someone has a solution that will work for you. When I had some Eastons and my custom HG1s covered in that crap, nothing worked and I just cremated the bastards.

Thanks guys.

JW - will the bleach "bleach" them, as in ruin the colors, etc.? I always think of putting bleach in laundry as something you do to socks, undershirts, etc (all white clothes).

Also, what difference does the front loading washer make....? Just wondering.

I don't know about the bleach for the same reasons you mentioned, Fletch. Maybe some oxi-clean and like products?

I think the front loaders are more glove-friendly because they don't have an agitator.

Have you looked in your area for a professional cleaner. Someone who cleans firemen gear, sports team gear or etc. They might have the larger specialized machines and experience with all kinds of materials to help you out.

Just a thought.

Since I am not playing this summer. I think i am going to get my gear cleaned then since I am storing it in a basement, just check on it weekly to make sure nothing is damp down there. I already have a some of this DampRid with my gear (though it's not needed apparently in the winter).

My dog pissed on my Eagles. I washed them lightly in the sink with regular hand soap then let them air dry for about a day. Then I covered those things in Lysol and let them sit for a few days to dry.

I used these guys over Christmas Break since I was in Dallas & they do pickups at the Stars Centers, Sport Tech Cleaning. It cost $50 to have my entire set of player gear cleaned & for another $10 they'll clean your bag too (I'll probably do that next time). Its a waterless, chemical free, heat free ozone cleaning & your gear will come out bacteria free with a nice clean scent (supposedly it keeps bacteria/odor away for 90 days afterward too). I plan on getting my gear cleaned at least once a year, depending on how much I get to play (I do take it out of the bag after each game, & let it air dry, but I like knowing that most bacteria, including staph are killed in the professional cleaning). I don't know if there is anything like this around you, but I would highly recommend it if there was.

I second the laundromat front loader. You can also use a color safe bleach if u r worried about colors getting ruined.

I did this with many different pieces of gear, and nothing ever got ruined.

Thanks guys! I'll try the laundromat route, then I'll take SubliTwill's suggestion and go to the local cleaner. Thanks Sublitwill! (I feel like I should give the thumbs up when I say that....haha. And I will say it feels weird to call you by that - not sure if you want me to call you by your first name on here ;))

I think it would be good, but hey, it wouldn't hurt to use some disinfectant spray, or mix up some of this lysol stuff these guys love. :D

That's exactly what it is. Rubbing alcohol kills bacteria and mold, and much more effectively then lysol. Lysol just makes it smell nice, it doesn't actually kill the stuff causing the odor.

I use a diluted mixture of rubbing alcohol on my gear after every use. Then I spray it with Febreeze for the nice smell. Alcohol is a great disinfectant.

Just picked up the newer Febreze Sport stuff. My stuff still smells like sweat after an alcohol-water mix. It smells less now, but has a Febreze scent to it.

I might have to give that stuff a try, my wife has been complaining that my gear has made our garage smell. It'll probably be even worse in the summer.

I don't know if i could handle smelling like febreeze when I play. I have a sani sport spray that works pretty good for the smell but I might have to take my gear into an ozone cleaning place. I hear it works wonders.

i had a bottle of febreze in my bag for a tournament in california. during the flight, it broke and my gear marinated in a pool of that perfume until the first game. to this day, the smell makes me sick.
