Team Canda New Look Uniforms

Recommended Posts

Did you see the shots on TSN of the guys trying to change jerseys on the bench...they could barely get them over their heads.

Once they had the regular one color practice jerseys on, it looked right again. I'm sure these jersesy will grow on everyone, but even the players were laughing about them.

Lets be grateful Team Canada and the NHL has not yet plastered the jerseys with logos as our Euro friends do.

I agree...putting 20 lego on a shirt it pretty ugly....but now everybody is getting on the case of TEAM CANADA...do you think every other country will do the same(i.e:usa)??

Personally, just by look and not fit...the look good...the greatest but not the baddest IMO....fit...well who does really care except the guys who wearing it!!

The NHL is switching to RBK's version of the tighter-fit jerseys. Not this season though.

Hearing what the players had to say was pretty funny. At first they were trying to be proper by saying every fraction of an inch, and fraction of a second counts...blah blah blah.

Then I guess a bit afterward the reporters were really digging for opinions and they found Shane Doan having some fun by saying that probably Iggy was the only one to ever wear anything that tight before....hmmm wonder what he meant by that? Iggy had a good laugh about it though, then after a long pause replied, "maybe".

They also talked to Bertuzzi, who as a refreshing change, was asked about something other than Moore. He said he really tried to get one on, in fact, he had four guys helping him and he couldn't pull it down.

JJ

Edit: Here is an article, and per my earlier post they are slippery!

Canuck skaters ditch new duds

Team Canada: Ghostbusters

KELOWNA -- The new look lasted 20 minutes.

For one period of running-time scrimmage yesterday, the Team Canada players wore their new Nike Swift sweaters and socks.

After that, Team Canada 2006 executive director Wayne Gretzky sent a message down to the bench: That's enough. Go back to the regular sweaters.

The Nike sweaters were prototypes of the ones Team Canada will wear in the February Olympics. They are sleek, synthetic and tight. Far too tight.

"I didn't even wear it," said Rick Nash who put on a phenomenal display yesterday and snapped home a couple of beautiful goals. "I couldn't get it on. It was way too tight. I didn't bother."

The biggest guy on the team, 6-foot-6 Chris Pronger, followed Nash's example.

"It was a little tight for me," he said. "I just wore my practice jersey. I didn't wear the tight one. I was one of the smart ones. They need to make some tailoring adjustments."

What about the form-fitting socks?

"The socks were a little tight, too," Pronger said. "My feet are still a little numb, they were so tight."

"I think they got the sizes a little bit wrong," said another one of the big guys, 6-foot-4 Joe Thornton. "Normally, I'm about a size 58 sweater. I think I'll probably be a 66 in something like this.

"The socks were tight as well, a bit tough to get used to. The socks we usually use are kind of baggy and real big, and nice and tall. These ones were short. It felt like leotards pulled over your shin pads. It didn't feel too good."

The goaltenders didn't have any complaints, but their sweaters were larger, even though the new league rules require them to be snug.

"It always baffles me why they do these things," Marty Turco said. "I've never made a save with my jersey before, but as long as we don't look too silly, it doesn't really matter to us."

The first impression is that it's a retro look. With the tight sweaters and tighter socks, the players looked like something out of the National Hockey League's opening season. You almost expected a rover to show up on the ice.

"They looked like video-game guys," Turco said.

"Jarome Iginla has probably worn something that tight before," Shane Doan said with a chuckle.

Iginla smiled when asked for confirmation, paused a couple of seconds and then nodded: "Maybe."

"They're not my cup of tea," Todd Bertuzzi offered. "It's something you'd wear to a bar maybe, but I don't know, out on the rink, it's pretty tight. I don't know if they've seen what we look like under our shirts, but not a lot of us are that cut."

"They're different," Doan added. "And I don't know if different is in a good way or a bad way. If you fall down, you actually pick up speed. They're fairly slippery.

"But it cuts down on player costs to the team because you don't need a garter belt and you don't need sock tape because those things aren't moving once you get them on."

Kirk Maltby had a similar observation.

"It's definitely a different look," he said. "I think it will take some time to get used to. The problem is when you go down, you slide. Those socks are like ski pants."

When asked for his opinion, coach Pat Quinn just laughed and said: "I don't answer political questions." Then he added, "It's different. I don't have to wear them."

Later in the afternoon, Steve Jones, communications manager of Bauer Nike Hockey, arrived on the scene to do some damage control and insist that this was just a first attempt.

"The key is that we don't want to make it so over the top that they're not comfortable wearing it," he said. "The feedback is obviously what we need to make some adjustments and we're going to do that."

He heard no objections.

Can we please have some horizontal stripes?

Actually, those red and black jerseys don't look too bad. The solid red socks on the other hand. They look like beer leaguers who wear sweatpants instead of socks.

Whos in that pic on the far left....He looks hilearous...Huge upperbody and stick legs

The jerseys are a little to tight fitted i think. I laughed when i saw them trying to change, and when Bert was saying he couldnt get it on. I think the socks are fine, they look pretty cool.

well they still arnt growing on me. the guys wearing them http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/photo?slug=kel..._kel107&prov=ap look a bit rediculous. the jerseys are ok but the socks look terrible!!! its pretty bad when guys cant get the jerseys on by themselves, and even worse when some cant get them on.

Will goalies be wearing these as well because by the look it will severly restrict their movement and besdies what goalie needs wind resistance?

About the too-tight socks and jerseys: it's a plot by Nike to help Team USA win the gold!

I was joking that the new, tight jerseys and socks were meant to ham-string the Canadian team's players...

But, there is a story about the US 1998 Women's team having prototype Bauer Vapor XXs, which the Canadian Women's team didn't have access to. Can anyone confirm or deny?

These jerseys are a disgrace to Canada! In the red jerseys St. Louis looks like a tyke hockey player. Personally I thought the old jerseys were very sharp. Why couldn't they just keep the same design as the old jerseys but with the nike technology?

Looking at that picture, they all kind of look like little kids with the wrong sized jerseys. I can't see this helping to promote the game - it just looks wrong. Do teams really want the crowd laughing at them as they skate on to the ice to start the game?

Damn, looks like Steve Jones is catching some heat...he's a good guy. He's a fan of MSH :)

I like Steve, he's a nice guy. I enjoyed meeting him in Vegas and actually thought about posting a disclaimer about that earlier.

Jeeeeezz.. Blake is massive! he's taller than Gagne without skates on.. lol, and St-Louis looks like a child..

I met Martin this summer. He is not as small as you think! Which just goes to show how big the other guys are!

I'm sure there will be some changes and mods to the uniforms..but I like how Nike uses its tech across the board..the stuff that was originally used in '02 by the speedsters making its way into the hockey world...it just continues the trend..Meibock/Kor, Dan Jansen/Chicago, etc...pretty soon we'll all just have a jig and a honing stone!!

Why would Steve Jones catch heat for this?? he's the communications guy..not the designers...

I think the US just needs to dig up that loonie that winds up in the ice somehow!!
