the team you hate

That and just the teams who'd use it to "only" lose 3-1, 2-0. The Devils at least scored off the chances they got.

Old Habs teams played actual hockey, they didn't turn hockey into hugging.

Oh I remember those Hab teams well. Richier, Lemeuix, Corson, Skurdland, Gingras, Naslund, McPhee and on and on.

They did INDEED hug and play "defensive" hockey.

You guys are right on. Jacques Lemaire coached the Habs in early 80's and taught defensive hockey way back then. The "Flying Frenchmen" were long dead once Scotty Bowman left. The 80's Habs would shut down teams to 15-20 shots on goal in the Forum. Habs would take 14 shots, score twice, win 2-1. That was BORING hockey and I saw those games myself in the Forum. Meanwhile, out west the Oilers and Jets were playing 8-6 barnburners!! Look it up. NJ Devils did not kill hockey in the 90s. Hockey killed hockey in the 90's.

Now back to the topic: Hate is too strong a word but I have always disliked the Flyers. I am in Rangers/Devils/Islanders Country. Bobby Clarke has always been a major whiner and it is a bit tired to listen to. How he keeps his job is beyond me. He has very little to show for all his years as a GM.

I can't stand the Devils or the Islanders...

Although I'm in Jersey, I'll always be a Rangers fan. Naturally, I'm prepared to pick a different team for the playoffs, and hopefully I won't have to this year.

The reason is just the rivalry between those teams and my Broadway Blueshirts.

Actually the "Flying Frenchmen" refer to the teams back in the 60's and 70's when you had Cournoyer, Lemaire, Lafleur and so many others, who really did "fly". Every line had a speedster that could burn you.

What happened to them was when all those speedsters retired, and the Habs no longer had exclusive rights to Quebec talent, they had no more of those legs to depend on, but still had the tradition of winning to uphold....that's when the new "trap" system was instituted.....Winning became more important than "style".

PS have been a "Habs" fan since 1954...I just hated everyone else....but have been notably discreet for about 24 years or so.....

I covered this in another thread yesterday. I hate the Yankees. I hate Lakers. I hate the Canadians. I'll start hating the Sixers once they start winning again.

And quite recently I've found myself hating the White Sox -- but I'll love them if they play the Yankees.

As a Blues fan I have to say the Red Wings because they pretty much always kick our ass. Looks like things aren't going to change anytime soon.

By the way, my brother-in-law sat next to Yzerman at the Cardinals playoff game this afternoon. Yzerman should be alright in anyone's book.

Why does it matter if the habs play defensive hockey. They've won 24 stanley cups and I persanally don't care if they did it playing defensively.

Except they didn't win most of them playing that way...in their "hayday" they always had good/great defensive players, but these were always guys with great skating and hand skills too. Harvey, Tremblay, Gainey, Robinson, Savard, to name only a few....The Habs always had at least one or two outstanding defenceman on their winning teams who could take control of the game in the defensive zone...but it was not by playing "defensive" hockey as a team that they won so much....The equivalents of a Brian Leetch in his prime.

They depended on their individual defensive greats to cause turnovers and create the speed transition the Habs teams were famous for...it was not a "system" as such...much more "intuitive". Read interviews with Larry Robinson and Scotty Bowman to get a feel for what it was really like when Bowman tried to get "systematic" with the old Habs..lol.

I have a sour taste for any organization that would give a spot to Claude Lemieux...so Montreal, NJ, Colorado, Phoenix and Dallas all have a negitive reaction from me. But the Detroit organization and fans all make my blood boil by embracing a cheapsh!t puss like Kirk Maltby. Seems like Hasek takes over any team he plays for too a la Buffalo which gave me an extra lil reason to hate Detroit..and now that Hossa is outta Ottawa... screw them too.

See, I don't hold grudges. Already I've found myself rooting for the White Sox in case the Angels slide..... ;)

As a Devils fan, I hate the Rangers and Flyers with a passion that consumes every fiber of my body.

Al Montoya and Jed Ortmeyer had my love when they were in Ann Arbor. Once they left for NYC, all love was lost and they found my shit-list.

Reminds me of the "Beat L.A." chant that went up in the Garden in the '80's.
