Oh it works alright. That was so terrible, I remember when I was little and I hated wearing my neck guard our coach said we would never wanna end up like that "Buffalo goalie". Now I see why...

I remember that like it was yesterday.

It was 1987 and I was in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, visiting my grandmother. She had satellite tv and I was watching SportsCenter, and they said "If you are eating breakfast, you might want to leave the room."

Did he survive? Wow, that is just grueling to look at

Yes, he has been a goaltending consultant in the NHL for years. Not sure if he's still around.

That's interesting, considering 1987 was two years prior to the incident...

I heard that the neck guards most youth players wear is under some contention. Some say it has the potiential to drive the blade higher up into the neck where its impact is more dangerous. Anyone hear of any real data on the subject?

It was mentioned several years in a row that there were evidently two cases of that happening and USAH will not require neckguards in case it happens again. Both times that came from USAH people at my ref clinics.

ESPN did a series on him a while back and you would not believe what kind of mental scar that incident left with him. If anyone has the time or patience to try and dig that up it would really be appreciated.

I've only ever seen it to the point that he rolls over and you see the first bit of red on the ice...I've never seen that much of it before.

That was...what...4-6 seconds worth of video...must been an eternity for the guys standing there basically watching the guy die. And even longer for Clint.

From what I recall....the Ref (or trainer...can't remember) grabbed his neck with a towel to apply pressure. They said at the time..if he hadn't been at the zamboni end of the rink...he would've been dead be the time he got to centre. That guy basically saved his life.

And, yeah...he was a mess for years after that. Can you imagine 90 minutes of stitching and 300 stitches.

I can't believe the number of goalies who don't wear that hanging neck gaurd. Hard to believe that hasn't happened more than once (top that degree, I mean).

Man that is pretty brutal. The blood is just spilling out like a hose. And on top of that, he was concious the whole time! I would have fainted.

they said that if he got cut 1/8 of an inch lower, he would have been dead within 2 minutes....Thats scary

Not trying to be a prick or anything but in the link it says if he was cut higher.

God that made me nauseous. Freak accidents like that always make me paranoid for a week or two then I go back to my old non-protection wearing self.
