Yeah, because after shelling out $200 for the latest OPS or $500 for skates, you can't afford any bloody drugs.

I just started playing ice hockey again after a 10 yr. layoff.  Now I cannot stop buying.

Same thing happened to me, except my layoff was twice as long.

All because of a composite shaft that I fell in love with after picking it up on the cheap. Then everything else had to be lighter.

When I was a kid, I was a pretty good player with really bad equipment.

Now everything is reversed. :(

I had taken 4 or 5 years off, and when I started back up, I went through the same thing. There was so much cool new stuff, I couldn't stop buying.

I took a lot of heat from my wife.

Here's how to beat it:

First, you will need to slow down on the purchases.

Now let's say you want those vapor gloves (but don't need them.) And you really need a new helmet.

Buy the gloves. Be sure to tell your wife what the retail price was and what a great deal you got on them. Try something like: "I was going to need a new pair in a year or so, and this deal was too good to pass up. I save around $70 on them."

Now in 2 or 3 months, inform her your helmet is failing. Ask her what to do. "Should I buy a new helmet? Or, should I keep using my broken one? It probably will protect me..." She'll tell you to get a new one. Now go buy your RBK 8K or Bauer 8000 or whatever. (Make sure she knows what a good price you got it for)

If you would have bought the helmet first, you'd be stuck with your old gloves because you "just bought a new helmet..."

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. This trick works like a charm. Even better is to show the wife a bruise, it get's you new gear all the time, especially helmets, visors and cups. :) Not new gloves though, haven't figured how to show an injury there. hehe.

I've got the same problems. I got back into hockey after about 5 years, and needed new gloves cause the old ones smelled so bad. It was all downhill from there, eventually replacing pretty much every piece of equipment i had at least once (normally twice if i ended up not liked what i ordered).

The injury thing is also a huge excuse. Slip and twist your knee in your last game? Solution: new set of rink rat wheels and possibly new skates. Bruised finger from a slash? Obviously those gloves aren't protective enough, time to drop 150 on some high end ones. It's a viscious cycle :D

Guess we are all the same!

As soon as i see a new high end thing i buy it or order it.I must have over 25 OPS and the sad thing is i dont play ice hockey anymore.I play 4 time a week in high level leagues. But still i am stupid for paying that much.... so my wife said anyway :D

BUT HEY WHOS THE BOSS

I will leave you guys with my word of wisdom:LIFE IS SHORT SO BUY A LOT

Some things I replace more frequently, like gloves. My last two pair of pants lasted three years each, same with my shins and elbows.

I used my shin pads and elbow pads forever before I replaced them both in the last year. My shoulder pads and pants are 4 years old. I buy all the gear for my shop but since I'm happy with my own gear, I don't get new stuff all the time. However, gloves are a different story! I love hockey gloves and own over 70 pair, many oldies from 50s,60s,70s. My game gloves are Cooper Pro Nylon Knit short cuffs from the mid 90s, still made in Canada. I find those on ebay. I rotate 4 pair. Now I have the Supreme 90 gloves and they are amazing. So, I have a ton of gloves and use the newest pair all the time! When I die and they find all my hockey gloves, its going to be funny!

I think probably the majority of people on this board are addicted, or else we wouldn't spend so much time looking at all these pages of info

When I first got back into hockey after my 6 year break I was pretty bad, I tried hiding alot of my purchases but eventually my wife found out and that didn't turn out so well. I think the first time I realized i had some issues was when I came home with 2 rubber Responses because I got a good deal at $179.99 each :o

I think keeping the wife informed of purchases actually helps me to control the desire to buy new equipment all the time

I think you've hit the nail on the head - if I wasn't so keen on new gear I wouldn't spend so much time reading this forum. My wife's a good sanity check too - the thought of explaining to my wife why I need a $200 stick is what's stopped me from buying one, although we'll see what happens when my current number 1 stick breaks :P .

i know im addicted, i cant go to the LHS without coming home or wanting something new. alot of the time i go i end up with a new 9.99 pro blade.

for me its mostly just sticks and gloves that i always want new, i currently have $500 worth of gloves, aand thats just 2 pairs. as for sticks i sell to buy new stuff, for me its not all about the lastest and greatest tho, i just sort of like tring diffrent stuff and pro return stuff.

Yeah, try working for your LHS...since working here I replaced every piece of gear and since i play both goalie and out, its pretty expensive.

Its hard to refuse buying the latest and greatest especially when something is new and you know you will be the first one out there using it.

Luckily I don't have a wife to yell at me for it!

I was very, very ... ok ... very bad for a while.

My solution was simple. If I wanted to buy a stick, as an example, I would have to sell 3 existing ones and use that money for the purchase.

Now I have trimmed my collection and can get new things once in a while.

A bad scenario is when your wife plays hockey and wants the new stuff, too!

"We don't need groceries this week, Honey!" :o

Thank goodness her leagues are a bit easier on sticks than the guys leagues!

We're all gear addicts, that's pretty much why MSH exists...

The reason I use this forum is to make sure I know precisely what I should be buying the next time I (really) need some equipment.

Besides a pair of Novius shafts, I've been very happy with the purchases I've made based on the reviews and advise from ppl on this forum.

Oh and I use Ponty's method as well.

Just sold those 2 Novius shafts, and now waiting to see how the buzz/reviews on the soon to be released Mision Ion shaft are.

If it weren't for MSH I would proabaly just buy 2 new ones, and then buy the Mission if it looked nice....

I just started playing ice hockey again after a 10 yr. layoff. Of course I had to buy new stuff. Actually I bought some new and some used stuff. Now I cannot stop buying. I have some Easton Air hockey gloves that are only 2 months old but I made the mistake of trying on some Vapor XX gloves and I fell in love with them. Should I drop $135.00 on the new Vapors when I already have good gloves? I like the Eastons except for the color (Navy blue and yellow). I want all black gloves. I don't make six figures so I should just be happy with what I have BUT I can't. My wift is about to KILL ME!!! HELP!!!!

welcome to my world. I've had the same problem also. just can't control myself when I hit the local sports store. I even have the "impulsive buyer" rebate.

Just take a small amount of cash next time you go into your LHS. And cancel your ebay account.

And all you guys are whipped. Of course, that's probably a reason that I'm not married.

stick with what you got... and use that money you were going to spend on gloves towards a new pair of skates or a ops

I understand going through a lot of gloves and sticks. I can't understand having a bunch of different skates though. The only reason I had multiple pairs of skates was when they went on sale (and no longer made) and I bought a bunch to stock up.

Things like shoulders, elbows, and shins shouldn't need to be changed up too often.
