Neck protector II

Do you wear a neck protector? If not, why?

I wear one because I remember seeing that Clint Malarchuk footage from when I was kid, I will never NOT wear one for that reason.  Ya it feels like shit and everything but I have had to wear one forever so its not something new I have to get used too.

Most of the neckguards that people use would not prevent a cut like Malarchuk's. They're a lot better at absorbing impacts from pucks or sticks.

Won't the kevlar neckguards prevent cuts?

How can those soft neckguards absorb impact from a puck? I always thought the opposite, and definitely correct me if im wrong, that the neckguard wouldn't do much for direct impacts but were somewhat cut resistant.

It will prevent whatever spot it covered from getting cut, but can deflect the blade up/down and result in the same type of injury.

OK.. I understand what you're saying now.

Seriously, when was the last time you heard about neck cuts since the Malarchuk incident? Probabilities of getting injured are a lot too little for me to wear one, i'd rather have a full cage first...

I saw two incidents in Europe when I was living there in the 90's. The worst was a star player from then Division 1 Mora club who died right on the ice; a player was checked and upended in front of him and the skate severed his throat. Can't remember his exact name, but he wore # 24 (the pictures were gastly; blood spread out about half of a face-off circle, remember his helmet with his number laying alone of to the side). Since then, all Swedish leagues including the Elit division require neck guards for all players (even when face visors are not required). I think Finland might have made them mandatory in their pro leagues as well; at least all the recent pictures I've seen have them.

I have a nice one around but it's like my shoulder pads; if I'm going somewhere to play serious competition it's part of the full set, but for weekly pick-up don't use much protection.

Scroll down the page to check out some of the Jofa ones from this site:

I have one of the turtleneck shirt looking ones

No. I don't know if they even existed when I was growing up playing hockey. I had never seen one until a couple years ago.

Maybe they should make neck guards outta that d3o stuff that was used for skiers in Torino. That'd be SO much better for mobility.

I've never heard of this stuff before, but I just went to the website and it sounds pretty amazing. Do you think this stuff could be used for all sorts of hockey protective gear, not just neck protectors?

Used to have to wear one for both ice and roller but now (thank goodness) they're not required. I hated them so much! I remember the 1st one I ever had was a thick white Cooper one with a big piece of plastic in the middle...anyone else unfortunate enough to suffer one of them?

If Nike Bauer discover it, it'll go along with their "low air resistance" equipment idea.

I think it would be awesome. Not so much for anywhere you want padding (shins/elbows/pants/helmet/shoulders), but anywhere you just need stiffness, it would work perfectly.

Things like neck protectors (think like an old-style chainmail hood, or a balaclava/ski mask) could be completely protective, eliminating the problems Chadd mentioned. You could put it in the jersey and not need kidney/crosscheck protection or wrist slash guards, put it on the calf and not need wraparound shin guards.

Make the skates out of it; they'd be more flexible without sacrificing protection from pucks.

Not anymore, simply because we don't have to.

When i did wear them I never had a problem. Used to use the easton kevlar neck protector, super thin, hardly noticed it. Guys in my league also used to cut the plastic inserts out so it was just like a turtle neck, or just use those thing bib type guards.

yes and no....for one of my roller leagues it is necessary so I wear a canada brand one, its got plastic in the middle so keeps its shape and sits a bit away from my neck so i dont notice it (even though i guess this makes it less protective)

In my other roller league theyre not required so i dont wear it, even though i got sticked in the neck last week!

An incident today reminded me of this thread. I was going to the net with the puck when I got tackled from the side and behind. He was wrapped around my knees so we both went down and into the boards to the side of the net. The other guy ended up under me and towards the boards. I got up, looked over my shoulder and asked the guy if he was OK. He was holding his face, didn't say anything so I took a few strides out, looked over again and saw blood pouring from his face at which point I started calling for the ref. He was wearing a half visor but somehow my skate had cut him in the mouth. There was blood all the way out to the blue line where he skated off. I heard later from some guy on his team that he had suffered a deep cut and had to go to the hospital.

I don't wear a neck guard but am seriously thinking about doing so now. All I can think of is how easily it could have been his throat that I cut instead of his mouth, and about how awful that would have been. As it was, this incident has really shook me up.

In highschool my coach made the team wear them even though it wasn't required by the league. I hate them and will never wear one again, half the time I'd stuff mine in my pants and not put it on till he noticed, later I rolled it up and taped it so it was really thin, almost like a necklace and soon I just refused, he threatened to bench anybody that didn't wear it, but I organized a strike for everybody not to wear one, "is he gonna bench the whole team?" I said, he was pissed but gave up on the idea.

Just seeing that video convinces me that I've made the good decision of playing with one my hole life. Come on guys, would you play without a cup or helmet just because it's not comfy? Well that's my opinion. And neck guards don't protect from impact at all! They're made with cut resistant fabric and prevent cuts.

Used to wear one when i started playing, wore it for maybe half a season. Hated the feeling and restricted movement i had. I also like the air to flow around my neck so i dont get too hot, so i havent worn one in 8 years and will probably never wear one again. (never played in a leauge that requires one)

Bin looking for a while now but cant seem to find any really low profile neck guards, can anybody help me?

I actually started just wearing one...all these stories, the video, and close calls made me get one. First couple games I wore it...glad I did. I went airborne and first thing I see coming at my face when I was about to hit the ice was the other team's goalie and his skate blade since he was down and had his back to me! Then had a tangle up in front of my own net and in the net I go and legs, sticks were flying everywhere. Was freaking out since again, skate blade near my head. Me, our goalie, and another player wound up in the net. Nothing really happened, but prevention is the key...hasn't really bothered me either

About the low profile...I bought an Itech N-7. It was reallllly big and jammed up under my chin. I folded it down and put a stitch or two in it, perfect fit while covering my neck. I haven't seen many low profile neck guards...lowest I seen was the Easton which isn't that low still.
