What type of facial protection do you use?

Just curious to see what members use. Personally I've used a full cage and a half visor. It felt safer playing with the cage since I've had a puck deflect off a stick and hit me in the face while wearing the half. Which have you tried, prefer and why?

i use a pro aviator mod, and i love it. going from a cage to visor made a world of difference in vision and in airflow.

i don't think i'd go back to cage, ever.

coming from cage i use oakley 2.0

first game with the visor i got a stick AND a puck to the visor. It feels bare the first time when you go cageless but once you get used to it, it feels great.

I also like visor because it doesn't choke me and i don't have to deal with wet chincups.

I think the results you have now (4 half-visors, 3 full cages) represent pretty well what people have. Full cage is the best way to be "face-safe" while the visor looks good and feels looser... Wearing nothing seems to be less popular these days...

a lot of the times when wearng a half visor it can seem like wearing nothing.

why wear nothing and be unprotected, or why be protected* and feel as if it is nothing?

* to a certain extent

Went back from visor/cage combos to full cage. I HATE cleaning the visor everytime I practise/get ready for a game. It's just frustrating. Good ol' Bauer Tru-Vision.

Full cage. Doesn't steam up, lots of protection from pucks and sticks. I've had a few too many ring off my cage to ever be comfortable with either a half shield or nothing at all.

I wear an Itech RBE1 that I modified by cutting about an inch off the bottom with a dremel tool. I also added a third hole below the bottom screw slot so that it would sit higher and be more secure, since it is just a hole and not a slot. Plus I cut down the sides so that they don't overlap where my chinstrap meets my helmet. It almost looks as good as the $50 visors for half the price!

I've always worn a half visor. Originally the Itech RBE1 and for the last several years, the Oakley Pro Aviator. Yeah you do have to maintain/clean them to maximize their life over a cage. (definitely keep it in a helmet bag/pillowcase inside your main hockeybag.) I usually replace my visor once a year only because it's usually become pretty scuffed up by stickmarks/scratches/etc...

I WISH that I could use full facial protection. I've taken some pretty nasty injuries to the nose and mouth. I tried using a full cage for about 6 games when I had my jaw wired and I just felt too "enclosed". My peripheal vision was awful and I felt like I was being hit more because I didn't see it coming. Yes hockey is not, and will never be my occupation, but when I wear a full cage my game goes downhill in a big way.

I wear a full cage now. I'll play without one in some leagues, but not in my current one. I dunno if the guys just don't have control of their sticks or they're trying to kill me, but I've been hit in the cage with a stick 3 times in less than 2 seasons. They're always behind me, so I don't see it coming. I guess they never learned to keep their sticks down.

I tried a halfshield/cage combo, but it was too heavy and i hated having to clean it off every shift (sweat would get all over the inside of the shield, especially if i got hit).

went from the full plastic itech visor to a half cage half visor combo then to a full itech cage once i got used to the cage it was way better not having to wipe it off every time i got off the ice

I've been wearing my Jofa 480 cage for years now after taking a shot off the cheek years ago. Best thing I ever bought. Saved my ugly puss umteen times since, even from shots in the face just sitting on the bench between shifts. Tried going to a visor cage combo but again ran into the condensation build up problem between shifts. Had to keep wiping the visor down, and then there was the scratches build up problem as the visor aged and took some abuse. I think the full cage is the way to go, just buy it put it on and forget about it. Lasts forever and low maintenance. I personally think the Jofa/CCM cage is the best, more streamlined than the Itech. I have both and prefer the Jofa cage. ;)

I had one of the older model shield/cage combos and after a few games I switched back to full cage because of the fogging/condensation problem. Have the newer combo models eliminated that problem yet?

And I wouldn't recommend going half shield. I have a teammate who did it once just for a pickup game, and when I saw him the next week...well, let's just say he looked a lot more like a hockey player.

When I play high school I go with the old FM3000 cage, cause it's required, when I ref I used an oakley pro mod. aviator, and when I play I either wear my ref helmet or I go with nothing.
