How often should skates be sharpened?

Recommended Posts

It wasn't me. LOL

May not have been you...but it's still your fault. Once you skate on a Bouce sharpened blade, you're screwed unless you live by him or send him 15 sets of blades so you can replace them. Every other sharpening now sucks after the freaking MSH skate.

I have 2 sets of Step runners done by Jimmy with the FBV, and the original Graf runners with a 1/2" ROH. That way I have a set to throw on for public skates with the little one or playing outside on ice over the winter months. I can get that set touched up locally. The 2nd set of Step ensures that I'll always have good steel to play on. Can't beat his service either there at No Icing.

I play once a week. The ice I play on is pretty good and fairly hard. How often should I be getting my skates sharpened?

As soon as you feel like you're losing an edge.

i feel like once i'm losing an edge, it's too late.

i get my skates sharpened every 2nd game.

I think you'll get a pretty wide range of answers. I usually get mine done about every 10 skates, but I could probably go at least 5 longer - but I'd rather not have to get used to the extra bite of a fresh sharp after feeling edges deteriorate over time, so I tend to sharpen them a bit more frequently.

No one can tell you what is right for YOU. It's personal preference. The more you play the more in tune you will be to your edges and equipment and what you like or dislike.

I usually sharpen every 2-3 games.

I could go longer, but I seem to ding my edges frequently. I think it's contact with other players skates...

I am playing once a week and sharpen once every 5 skates or so...

Personal preference comes into play quite a bit. I know guys who have gone almost an entire season on a single sharpening. While my other buddy has a strict rule of "6 hours of hockey".

Try to do it as little as possible to make your steel last. Personally I don't have a strict time frame, only when I notice a different feeling in tight turns and stopping.

I experimented with hollow quite a bit, moving from 3/8" to 11/16" from two years ago to last year. Once I found the right hollow, I maybe get them sharpened every 2-3 months (skating about once a week). I use a Miraclestone to take the burrs out of the edges before each skate after the first month.

You should do it as often as it takes to always have good edges on your skates. Guys who claim to like dull edges in reality would like sharp edges but on a larger hollow.

I tried 3/4" (1/16" bigger than what I use now) but had trouble finding my edges in turns. Just felt like I lost control. I have no idea why 1/16" makes so much difference. I might try it again later this summer to see if the guy screwed up.

When I first get on the ice after a sharpening, it does feel like it has too much bite, but it "settles in" after the first skate. I know it doesn't make much sense, but I've got the skates sharpened maybe 4 times this year so far and played probably 30 times, so I'm happy.

I like to sharpen them before every skate or every second skate. It amazes me how some people can go so long without sharpening them. I always end up hurting myself from falling when I try to push my next sharpening.

I usually sharpen after 2-3 games. After each game I use the miraclestone to touch up the sides of the steel. I like to have my edges as sharp as possible so I feel fast on my feet.

Would a Miraclestone or one of the "stick" type hand sharpeners be the way to go in between machine sharpens?

Definitely the Miraclestone. It's very high grit and smooths the sides of the blade. The "stick" style blades will create an inward angle that changes the hollow of the blade.

Depends how you like them - everybody is different and so is the ice at different locations - 6-8 hours of ice time is the average between sharpenings - but then you hear some only do it twice a year and others do it weekly - Sidney Crosby has a 3/8 cut and I hear he has it retouched between periods - likes a sharp cut! I personally like a good cut and always keep my skates tuned weekly never want to blame my skates for sucking on the ice - just wish they had sharpening for my hands!!!

Yeah, it really depends.

I like a 5/8 cut, but I'm a heavier guy. However, I do get my skates done about once a week. Three games and I usually like to get them sharpened.

I also usually play on softer ice, so that's also a factor. One time I hadn't had my skates done in awhile, and just so happened to be playing on super hard ice. Not fun. Sliding all over the place.

I'm the ice at least 4x times a week. I use 90/75. I sharpen 4 times a year at the max. I really only get my skates sharpen only when my blades get really dinged up.
