wearing cage loose

Recommended Posts

alrite i play in new brunswick, Canada in a midget AAA minor league and i have played against Nove scotia, Pei, New Foundland, Ontario and ive seen some quebec teams play. i have never seen any of these teams where their cages loose. When i see pics from american teams and US college teams they all have there cages loose, why is that i do not understand, wouldn't it be easier for your helmet to be taken off in a fight? thanks for any response.

Because it's all about looking cool and you look so much cooler with the cage hanging half a foot away from your face.

You go faster.. duh.

(edit for more substance)

One of my teammates wears his loose. He's the only one on the team who bitches about every time somebody touches him too.

All you guys that wear it off the chin are looking for a concusion. The secondary impact is what causes most of the concussions.

A concussion is just the start. A kid on UVSC's line this year took a check from behind right into the boards behind the goal. He was out for the season with re-constructive surgery because his cage collapsed on him from not wearing it properly.

Edit: might as well just take your cage off.. I would rather get his with a puck than get hit by my cage from a puck hitting it.

I dont wear my cage tight, but its not super loose. I just find it to be more comfortable, It's perfect how it is right now. I have tried it loose, and I dont like it. I dont like it when you can see the chin cup, when you look down.

About the concussion part, I've always worn my cage relatively loose, but not super loose, and i've never had a concussion (that I know of), the worst i've had from my cage is a bruised chin, that happens almost every game..or atleast every game that gets rough.

I think it looks better tight.

I think it looks really stupid when its just hanging there, but I dont think it looks "better or worse" its a cage, its not for looks.

I wear mine a bit loose so that I don't have to unsnap it to put my helmet on/take it off. It all boils down to laziness. I play in beer leagues that are supposed to be non-contact, but i've taken a few punches to the cage, and gotten a fat lip from it once or twice.

Back when I had to wear a cage I tried to play with it loose to look badass one time. Everytime I would skate it would bounce and hit me in the chin, so I quickly learned to keep it tight.

I used to wear mine semi-loose, barely touching my chin...not tight, but not like 3 inches off my chin. I had one incident of it sliding up with my helmet when I ran into the guys shoulder/arm area. In the process of getting tangled up and my helmet/cage popping up, I took a stick in the mouth. I buckle all the straps now and have the chin cup much tighter than before.

I wear my Bauer 4000 with the cage in the J-clips all the way so there's no play, but I can slip the helmet off without undoing any of the straps

The beard keeps the water out of the chip cup ;)

When I'm playing in games I'll buckled the chin strap so it won't pop off, but in pickup it's a light game with little contact, so I don't buckle the chin so I can slip the cage up to cool off or wash my face a bit.

I get your point about the sweat and water in the chin cup. Couldnt you use a thin nail and poke a couple of holes in your chin cup as a drain to get at least some of it out. Just an idea.

I wear my FM480 about an inch or so off my chin. I can breathe and speak a lot easier with it not so tight. Plus I play in a beer league, so I don't have to worry too much about getting checked and having the cage slam back into my mouth.

i used to wear my cage loose untill this season, i was in front of the net when a guy slashed our goalie so i pushed him and as i did that my cage came up to my nose and he spun around and then whipped back with his stick and hit me in the mouth and nocked out a tooth and split my lip

My cage was loose because everytime I pulled my helmet up to spit it got loose by itself so I didnt really fix it. But I wear a Bauer 8000 with the Tru-Vision thing, and as someone mentioned above, its very snug, and I yell a lot when I play. But since juniors optioned a visor, I chose that instead. Now im sitting at home with a concussion. woo.

Canadains wear their cages loose because the hit a lot and here in America we don't always have the big hitting game but I'm just joking but I wear mine tight because it helps concussions and I dont want my hockey career to end at a young age. But i know a lot of kids that wear it loose and some have good reasons like the chin strap makes their chin all red and like kinda like a rash and the ones that think their all that is because they think there badass with it like that but there not soo.....

There is no reason you have to leave it loose...if you have a rash clean the chin cup if that doesnt work switch to a diffrent chin cup liner that doesnt. A hole in the cup to let the water out is new to me but a good idea....I dont wear anything (cage or visor) so i just take the lunps...
