wearing cage loose

Recommended Posts

I am too young to build a beard.

well there's your first mistake! you don't build a beard, you cultivate it

I just trimmed mine (#5) and the chin cup was irritating the shorter hairs. I'm too used to having a mane

When i used to have to wear a cage, i wore it just the smallest bit loose. Prolly about a half an inch, if that. Just enough so i couldnt feel it there, but when i got bumped or hit, it was right there.

But i see people with it so far off their chin, it makes them look like a 5 year old wearing an adult helmet. Crazy people, they are asking for some mad injuries.

This reminds me of a couple of guys i saw playing last night in a game before mine. they were wearing the old school cateye cages with no chin cup. they barely covered their mouths. If they were to take a shot to the cage it probably would have knocked out a tooth or three. Really funky lookin' cage.

Thats exactly how I wear my cage now. I get so much acne on the chin if i wear it tight. It looks like I wear it looser because my head is so big if I push the cage against my chin the cage doesnt even come close to the j-clips.

I used to have mine fairly loose, but now I have mine slightly tighter, for I was sick of getting my chin cup pushed up past my nose. I find them to be such a pain in the ass to wear, Although I would like to maintain my pretty face throughout my hockey carrer... B)

its all about looking good out there for many people... all through high school every one I played with, including myself, would always wear a jofa bubble loose and low... looks great but yeah, when you get hit it hurts. There's something to say for the confidence you gain when you have a specific physical image... anyone think that's a factor?

I don't like the chincup pressing right up against my chin. It's uncomfortable for me, plus I can't yell clearly, which is the best part of my game.

I took the side pieces off so the cage hangs. However, when you get hit on the cage, those things not being there allows the cage to go back into your jaw. I've gotten a couple of elbows that probably wouldn't have hurt so bad if I had those pieces still on.

The clips have nothing to do with anything. They dont need to be on the helmet at all. They are there if you arent to bright and wear it super loose get hit hard enough to break your jaw and have your broken jaw shoved upwards.

When a helmet is certified with a cage the J'Clips are not an included item for CSA testing. I am not sure about the HECC testing but in Canada they are not required on the helmet.

They are also not required in the Hockey Canada rule book. you will find nada in the rule book about J'Clips.

In my opinion, if you can push your cage (from the bottom) and the chin cup slides freely up, or with little resistance, than your cage is to loose to do its job. IMO, you are safer, from concussions, when wearing no cage versus a loose cage. That cage is connected to your helmet, and if that cage gets hit right than your helmet will come off of your head... a la concussion. If you have to do something at least do it right. The cage has a purpose and it works quite well when used properly. I dont know about some of you guys, but I would rather take the time and 'treat the acne/rashes' to get used to wearing a cage properly. Think about it, if you wear your cage right every practice you will get used to it in no time. I would think that people would have more confidence knowing that they are safe, instead of looking cool. Besides, you can find stuff to make your chin cup more comfortable. Whether you have to poke wholes in your chin cup or you have to buy one of those underarmour football chin covers(?), there is nothing worth saving more than your nuts and your head.

I also used to have mine off my chin by no more than 1/2 an inch. Then I took a shoulder to the face that knocked the cage down into my windpipe. Didn't feel so good and I tightened up afterward.
