Bad Ice/ Good Ice

Recommended Posts

Best ice... my ice sheet i take care of in fredericksburg va.... well not really... since my owner doesn't think we need gas it is hard to do ice cuts with cold water all the time and have a super humid rink.... not to mention not having a sub floor heater... ;)

Man, I wish I had a buck for everytime I saw a Zamboni driver screwing up the ice in the summer.

funny story about zamboni drivers. i play at the ohio state ice rink most of the time. it's got a reputation for bad ice, but they just renovated it, and i think it's a lot better than it used to be. anyway, last time i played, i guess somebody didn't shut one of the doors, so when the zamboni driver came around the boards, she got stuck. this is where it gets funny. instead of doing something to get un-stuck, she just sat there, looking helpless, for about ten minutes. and she kept the water going the whole time. osu has trouble w/ puddles in the summer anyway, but she seriously melted away like half the ice in this spot. you could have gone wading in it, the puddle was so big. so they had to delay our game for like 15 minutes (on top of the ten she'd just been sitting there) just to make the ice skatable again. even then, it didn't totally freeze until almost the end of the first period, and when it did it was really rough and not skatable at all. i played on the other wing that night. worst zamboni driver i've ever seen. and the worst part is, i would have said that about her even if this incident didn't occur.

Played tonight and the ice was melting. According to the rink personnel, the ice is supposed to be 20 degrees and it was in the low to mid 30s. Supposed to sub for a team tomorrow that plays at the same rink, wondering if they'll get it fixed before then. <_<

I hate playing on ice after a public skating session. It's like skating in a puddle. The puck doesn't slide, and all that water turns to snow by the end of the first period.

When you say "Bad Ice" there are alot of places that come to mind. Hyde Park in Niagara Falls. Holiday in Cheektowaga. Leisure in West Seneca. The old rink in Jamestown. Brighton in North Tonawanda. It's hit or miss around here, but the absolute worst I have ever skated on would probably have been in a tournament in the Detroit area. I don't remember the name of the rink, but I do remeber feeling as though I had to lift my knees to my chin every stride in order to keep from sinking in to the bottoms of my holders.

Best ice around here would probably have to be Depew. The rink doesn't look too great, and it's about 20 degrees below zero in there during the winter, but the ice is hard and fast and doesn't get beat up too easily. It's a shitty rink, but I always kinda look forward to playing there a few times each season. There are a few in the Fort Erie, Ontario area that aren't too bad either.

I may know the rink in MI that youre talking about... I played their this sprong and the ice was HORRIBLE, I think it was called Gross Pointe Civic Arena or something...

sport-o-rama ice was good when Barry's daughter was playing..but after she went off to Princeton it was all downhill..

my fav ice was the old rink at West Point in the early 80's, it was a dump but they kept it in great condition and was fast..

worst has to be a place down here in TX called Addison Square Garden....its not the heat or anything else..they just dont' care...they keep it really cold..but dont' get rid of any of the humidity...the 1-2 days they spent time on it ...it was obvious...I played there one season and will never go back...I think it was responsible for the damage to my knee last summer, so many ruts

one place got so foggy we had to skate circles to lift it. You couldnt see from the goal line to the top of the circles. And altoona pa has a rink that always feels like your on a pond right around the time it is starting to melt.

haven't played there in years -only once years ago when it was Iceoplex- but have only heard horror stories. no idea why it's still open.

i think Ice Training Center here in Richardson is one of the better rinks in the area.

Nothing but the truth. Pepsi Center has been horrible lately too.

Copps Coliseum here in Hamilton has been really really good at times this year, and really really bad at others. As weather got warmer it was bad...adn there are so many event through the season..having ice after a week of the circus or a eweekend of motorcross really sicks...I'd hate to be the Bulldogs and have to play gmaes that matter on it.

By far the best ice in town is at Market Street Arena in Dundas. It is a small rink...the local Mens Sr. A team plays there...but it is absoulately fabulous...they re-did everything...the boards, the ice surface, the netting...before last season and it was fantastic.

have you ever played on scott park ice its terrible and the rink is too small but perfect for 3on3 hockey

Do you realize how many rinks are in Detroit? There's probably more rinks in a 20 mi radius than your whole state.

Yeah, there really are an assload of rinks in that area. We played at about five different rinks in that tournament - all of which were a maximum of 10-20 minutes away from our hotel (Embassy Suites in Livonia). We probably saw three or four other rinks in that immediate area that we didn't play at during our time there.

...not to mention the fact that the Peranis superstore was about a two minute drive from the hotel parking lot...

Some of the most often places I have skated:

Worst:

1. World's Fair in Flushing - played JV there at Mt. St. Michael....that ice always sucked.

2. New Hartford Rec Center - I think they use that ice for shock testing on new cars. Ice is awful...especially when the condensation drips down from the rafters...makes the ice feel like someone dropped golf balls on the ice and they got stuck.

3. Whitestown Rec Center - They can never get that place cold enough to make the ice good. They also used sand as the base in the past...it was horrible for a couple of years.

Best:

1. Kettler Caps IcePlex - During the regular season, that ice is the best I have ever skated on.

2. Rangers practice facility in Rye - during the regular season, it is pristine. Most of our varsity games in HS were there.

3. Cicero Twin Ponds - great ice...especially in the winter. It is the best ice to skate on during the summer..they keep that place nice and cold.

4. Ashburn Ice House - Ice is usually pretty good. Some of the better ice to play on in the summer. In the winter I prefer Kettler.

5. Morrisville IcePlex - the rink where they play is some of the best around...but don't get many opportunities to skate on that surface. The other surface is decent.

5. Oswego State Campus Ice Arena - Another top notch rink during the season.

I hear ya...I must live near 50 sheets of ice within a 25 mile radius..I'm not counting the outdoor sheets set up at all municipal parks in winter

I've skated in both those rinks. Skated at the Whitestown Rec Center every year in high school for Whitesboro's home tourney: the ice was horrible and so were the officials.

The old run-down rinks usually have great ice, because it's the same temp inside as outside.

Another vote for Addison Square Garden

ITC gets my vote for good ice

Best-

Ice Vault, NJ- Pretty new rink and they keep it in great shape

Oswego Community Rink- It's so damn cold and the boards are fast.

Bayonne HS, NJ- Hard ice and impressed it's for the HS

Worst-

Pallisades Mall, Nanuet, NY- Zamboni driver sucks, ice is very thin, warm as hell in there, soft ice, all around shit' rink

Sport-O-Rama Monsey, NY- Let's just say some team cought some disease in there and theres more ice out of the rink than in it.

Malls in general suck for skating. When I lived in Charlotte, there were not a whole lot of options regarding skating. I ended up going to some mall in the ghetto of Charlotte..Was like skating through slush...There was another down in Pineville, but I lived way up on Lake Norman.

The best ice was at the RNS prep school that i live by it use to be a barn in like the 1950's but they turned it into a rink. Its is the best ice even those in the winter if it is cold at all you'll freeze. ive seen alot of ice times canceled because of the weather. And the worst i think is in the UNB varsity reds rink, the aitken centre it seems like it take 10 minutes to get from one end to the other.
