Therma Blade

Recommended Posts

I don't think I going to get them but I have to admit they looked pretty sick when I saw them this week. They reminded me of the LS2 Power holder since they are see through and light weight. I think they would be good blade holders without the heat part.

The clear one is the non-working display model.

i guess it's so we can see the battery and all the technology that makes it work?

Yes, otherwise you would just be looking at another white holder...

It doesn't seem like there's much of a seal between the holder and the blade. There are electrical components on the blade itself. I have seen working models and seen that get loose. It's going to be interesting to see how it holds up to impact and/or people not babying them (taking off soakers and the like)

As opposed to the fully-functional retail version. ;)

Out of curiousity (and forgive me if it's already been covered) but how much are the batteries? Or, are they rechargeable? I read somewhere that they only last 4 to 5 games so was curious.

Thus far, I haven't heard anyone not directly involved with the company say that they noticed a SIGNIFICANT difference. They should do a placebo testing to see if someone would notice. Wasn't someone saying they were going to test it with one turned on and one turned off?

Well, at least that's something then. I still think this is the most over-hyped costly piece of nothing we've seen in a while. It will soon be next to the fox Glo-Puck in some NHL closet somewhere....

Of course, there's no shortage of people who will spend as much as it takes even if they percieve an edge on the competition - $200 composite sticks proove this.

A related/unrelated question - how is that Titanium cage selling? The one for $150? That still around?

That was me.

Unfortunately, the only size they have were 280. Supposedly mine are coming soon, but we'll see.

I base things on the laws of motion and thermodynamics. they tend to not get violated. that usually works best for me.

A wise call. If you are interested, Speed skating as a sport has quite a bit of scientific data related to physics and physiology of skating. Here's some information along those lines:

Centripetal Force vis a vis turning radius and speed generation

While the laws of motion are certainly the ones that are best applied to the measurement of the blades, The principles of efficiency and their effect on physiology and endurance are really the ones that will explain the presence ,or lack thereof, of practical value to the skater.

As an analogy, A Chevy Malibu and a Honda Civic may have such a tiny difference in power and acceleration and tiny differences in intial performance that any claim to speedier driving may seem silly. But what if The claim was adjusted to state that It could be proven that Honda's are built to slightly stricter tolerances, so they break down far later than the Malibu....thereby keeping you on the road longer.

Therefore, its gotta be obvious to someone who knows their laws of motion and dynamics that even the most minute differences in static metrics can result in far larger differences in dynamic metrics.

Certainly you don't need elementary examples, so I apologize in advance for patronizing you, but in the long run, the Honda that stays on the road longer before conking out is faster overall than a Ferrari in the shop.

This is also why the portfolio manager who makes 00.25% more in return over 20 years compared to his competition is worth millions more because the effect of efficiency compounds over time. What is invisible early on may be undeniable later in the game. But surely you knew all this as you already know these Thermablade things don't work.

Unfortunately I must be a little slower on the uptake, so I'm going to go ahead and skate on them before I decide. That's called the difference between a hypothesis and a theory, which of course, you certainly know.

*sigh*

I would be so against them if they didnt try to make outlandish claims based on faulty experimental design and omission of critical data. Then, they take that and try to pass it off in a "scientific research paper" by this Alain Hache or whoever it was, who didnt even label a fucking graph. Thats a cardinal sin, and ultimately invalidates anything he has to say on the matter.

As far as the data i have read and analyzed in regard to this, I'm lead to believe that the impact will be minimal to the point of being null. A kids website about inertia is not a valid source, either. Especially when it's got nothing to do with drag.

let me put it this way. you mention the minute differences over the length of 20 years in stock investing... great point. however, lets say thermablades reduce the frictional force for a 200 lb skater such that the overall impact is similar to shedding 1lb of equipment.. I think thats an extremely generous estimate. You know what else would have a similar effect?? Taking a shit before the game.

A-ha, so me being of the heavy-set variety, this will give me the edge I need to finally outskate those tiny little speed demons!

In all seriousness... sure, I'd like to give them a spin, but on my salary, they'll be on my skates if and only if they've got a big goose-egg for a price tag.

I'd rather give myself a little push to keep gliding rather than pay $400 for some heated skate. If anything I need to work more on the ice and get a better workout, not work less!

thats what everyone is saying...me also...i'd love to try these out, but NO WAY i'd shell out $400 for something just to try out that i might not even feel has benefits....

maybe in a couple of years we'll see a price drop

Have'nt skated them yet, but I heated them up and put some Lanolin Edge on my beard and got a shave 10.025% cleaner with longer strokes and fewer cuts.

And my heart rate was 30 bpm.

I'm eating Pepperoni and Ritz Crackers and the Pepperoni I sliced is 20.265432% thinner and tastes 45% better. :P

Cool, once you skate them tell us how they are

kind of a funny bullet point:

"Blades can be rockered or hollowed to preference"

what an amazing feature!

It is stated that way to show that it is a tailorable piece of equipment that can integrate into a player's equipment with slight adjustment.
