Fastest Guy in the NHL

Recommended Posts

i heard on tv once that some coach said that he had seen players skate faster then bure could at the jr lvl when it comes to pure top speed. he said that the one thing that makes pure so special was that he had never seen anyone accelerate as fast as him before

Well a hockey rink isnt really all that long when ur traveling all the way around. I mean you cannot hit top speed around turns, so I feel Bure would own in the faster skater contest. I remember his brother Valeri did it one year, I think it was the same year where they both lit up the score boards, and he would have turned some heads but hit one skate around a turn and it threw him off balance.

drisco mentioned fata. i remember when he used to play for the pens the announcers would constantly talk about his speed. he could fly too. as for THE fastest i have no clue.

That would be Peter Twist, in the book "Complete conditioning for ice hockey"

Brian Campbell lol. Well andy macdonald won last night not surprisingly as he is quite small and can turn corners better than most. I think fastest skater is decieving. I think the more important thing is having very good acceleration. There won't be times when you need to skate around the rink completley but there will be times when you need to switch directions and burst to take it on a break away or get back to stop one.

i was really surprised with ovechkins time of 15+ secs. i really though he had it in the bag, as he was just cruising through the corners, with complete crossovers (no coasting) the entire way. he certainly appeared the fastest skater.

i still don't understand why guerin and rolston were in fastest skater instead of hardest shot.

Sorry, but he looked oh so choppy out there...not a smooth skater at all. Complete crossovers because he wasn't going as fast as the other guys!

I didn't realize McDonald was as fast as he was (and I am an Anaheim fan) b/c he is such a damn smooth skater.

Also, how about Nash SMOKING Bouwmeester in the relay?

I don't think AO has great top end speed. He's fast, but not blazing. He has an excellent burst and gets to top speed very quickly.

I'm pretty upset about Rolston not being in the hardest shot competition!

Fastest skate was a joke, IMO. Stopwatch?

the fastest skate & the people in it were just not right. i think we all know this.

jason blake should've been in it.

& ovy clearly did not run no 15.

Guerin had won the fastest skater competition in the past and Rolston is blazing fast.

Yes the stopwatch was a joke and a better indication of "game" speed would be a race from the goal line to the far blue line. You just don't have to hold your speed through a big sweeping curve in hockey.

Well what did you expect?

I know Boumeester is a great skater and all, but he is no Rick Nash.

Agree with JR there, Ovechkin has a choppy short stride. But remember that fastest and quickest are two things.

I think ovvie was somewhere in the middle of the pack even though he was the choppiest looking skater... he was flying.

Maybe a good test for speed would be some suicides

the announcers were trying to explain the problem they were having with the electronic timing and it sounded like they pulled it because players were cheating and holding their stick out in front of them when they got to the finish to get a faster time

does that sound right?

i would still prefer the electronic method because if the players know that -they would all be doing it anyway

it also makes me wonder how did they time people in the past and how accurate do you think they actually were?

i think the players or NHL should agree on together who should be in fastest skater competition even if there in another skill like such as a fast guy that does the shooting, if hes fast enough he should be able to do the skating to

how about mulltiple sensors that need to be triggered when you cross the finish line; one high, one mid and one low?

To trigger it with a stick it would need to either be waved or be in skating position and the high sensor would trigger close to the hands. It wouldn't be worth it for them to try to trip the meter with their stick.

They could just take out the stick completely, 500 grams at most isn't going to make a huge difference. Ovechkin wasn't dead last, theres no way he skated a 15. Even the announcers were surprised with the result..

You guys are funny. I give up.

Now the announcers were surprised...oh, gotta hold them in high regard, after all, these are the same guys who said Bill Kessel and Al "Chopper" Iafrate? If you know your hard shooters named Al, MacInnis was Chopper and Iafrate was Wild Thing.
