NHL 08

I sent my mom to go get the game while I was doing homework earlier today. Still not done it either, but the game should be in my possession within the next 3 hours or so... Impressions of the final version (hopefully) will come later today.

For those of you who have the 360 version, are there actually stick-on-stick physics, or do they clip like hell through the players' bodies like in the demo?

stick on stick collisions means that when you do the lower slash (not the slash that goes for the gloves) it'll hit your stick making it harder to deke and you'll lose control of the puck. has nothing to do with clipping.

Searched the Web...couldn't find much - is there anything (besides the Practice Mode) that the PC game lacks in comparison to the 360? I've never been one for "gaming," so I don't own a console, and can't really justify spending $300+ on video games when that money could just as well go towards more hockey equipment.

Any info or advice from any of you who might be more "in the know" than myself would be greatly appreciated.

*Edit* Additionally, I'm wondering if there is anything like "X-Box Live" available to PC users. I have never heard of such a service, but, as I said before, I'm not a gamer - pardon my ignorance. I get the impression that nothing like this exists, but I figure I might as well ask; I mean, since most PCs ARE already connected to the internet, it would just stand to reason.

From what I've heard on gamefaqs.com, EVERYTHING is lacking.

The graphics, the gameplay, online mode.

But that's just what everybody's saying. And everybody's always saying something.

PC - Current Gen graphics, physics, very limited. Skill stick is not very good, just limited to deking and shooting. There is an Online service for PC.. it's just called EA Online. Basically, 08 for PC/PS2 could just be called NHL 06 version 2.0

360/PS3 - Basically this would be the way to go, all of the screenshots that look 'good' are for these 2 systems. It has the One-on-One deking system, player customization, graphics, skill stick and all the stuff that makes a hockey game enjoyable.

Most games have their own dedicated servers. Honestly, the next gen versions are far superior in terms of graphics and gameplay, but I believe the PC version will be identical for next year if its any incentive to not spend 400 or so on a console as long as your PC can handle it.

I know what I did....bought a 360. I haven't owned a console since PS1 about 10 yrs ago but sports games aren't getting decent support on the PC anymore so there's not much choice.

look at the EA forums, just about all the "features" of NHL 08 are not available on the PC and people are pissed. frankly, the writing has been on the wall for years the sports gaming on the PC was a dying breed, was only a matter of time. besides, i'm a PC gamer, but playing sports games is much more enjoyable sitting on the sofa anyway.

and about xbox live being available for PC users, I have heard rumors that MS is working on bringing it to the PC.

I personally think thats dumb. PC games are so much easier to mod/download stuff for that the replay value of such games subsequently rises, especially for racing games etc. but for sports games, even hockey games, if people, and I know there are those out there that could do it, could create there own jerseys with a blank white template and made it look however they wanted, with there own logos, design there own rinks, add there own gear etc. it would up the replay value and make it more fun.

unfortunately, that is changing and will continue to do so now that consoles have internet connectivity and online services. and another downside is that M$ and SCEA can control the content in ways that couldn't be done on pc's and what that means is that everything that used to be a free download on the pc will now come with a price. and free user created content will most likely never exist on consoles. why would it when they can do it themselves and sell it to you for a profit?

For those that know the game, or played it on both; is their a 'better' choice between the Xbox 360 and PS3?

360 is better, but I am happy enough with the PS3 version...it's still a lot of fun IMO.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but where do you put in the code for all the jerseys? I'm playing the pc version by the way.

I don't have the PC version but it should be in the menu area where you deal with your profiles. On 360 its in MY NHL08/RBK Edge.

I don't ever pre-order games for this very reason. It seems 1/2 the time you never get it until after its already available at retail so what's the point? I would cancel if you can and just go buy it.

360.....60 frames per second.

I'm not really that in the know on the technical aspects of all this... can you explain what exactly that difference is? I looked it up and read that the PS3 has 30 frames per second, so obviously the 360 is 'faster'(?). But where exactly does this diffence come into play and how noticable is it?

Frame Rate is the term used to say how many "frames" or still pictures are displayed on your monitor/tv is a certain amount of time. If the frame rate was higher, that means the animation typicially should be smoother, and the game overall should run faster.

If you've ever seen a webcam feed, or a poor digital camera recording video, and the video is jumping, that would be a low framerate.

Higher Framerates in a game technically means that it should look and perform better.

keep in mind though that ps3 will probably run at 60 fps for 09

That's what they said after madden 07 for the 08 games.

thats what i ended up doing, im playing right now.

the skill stick is damn hard to get used to. but it does seem like it will make the game a lot more fun once it clicks.

Got my hands on the full game yesterday, and man, I suck. Even on All-Star, the CPU's defense absolutely dominates me. The game feels really slow compared to the demo too, because of the less speedy players (Buffalo isn't that fast, minus Afinogenov). Those are my initial impressions (<45 minutes of playtime), but as I play more, I'll obviously get better, and I'll probably have better impressions.

Still, the graphics are excellent, and I don't find the presentation that bad, though it is the same as last year. Gary Thorne needs to learn how to pronounce names though!

EDIT: After slowly getting acclimated to the game, I bumped the difficulty up to Superstar... And it was intense. The AI was astoundingly good, and that makes your goals (or defensive plays) all that much sweeter. Quick passing and clogging passing lanes are the orders of the day, just like a real hockey game. I was tied 2-2 midway through the 3rd, and it froze on me. That's the only complaint I've had thus far, though.
