Looking for new pants. Need advice.

Recommended Posts

So my 692 pants have a new large tear in them. While they will probably last for a while I just don't like them and it gives me a reason to replace them. I'm looking for something less bulky, but it needs to have solid hip and tail bone protection. I need mobility and length, as well as zippers in the legs. Right now I'm using XXL in the CCMs, which I got for the length(I'm 6'1 with long legs) but they are probably a size big, if not two sizes big in the waist. I've been considering tacklas(the plus 2 is nice) but I've been having issues finding them with zippers. With all the newer equipment coming out recently, I was wondering if some of you guys can offer some advice on these new lines of pants. Price isn't a big deal but of course I'd like to spend less as opposed to more.

In short, I want:

Streamline as I can get.

A bit longer than usual length.

I'd prefer them to weigh less but that's not really important.

Protection from cuts(cut resistant).

Breath-ability would be nice.

I need:

Good hip and tail bone protection.

Leg zippers.

Mobility.

Thanks for any replies.

Your description sounds like a pair of XX or XXX lites would be perfect. Only the don't have zippers. Actually they have a velcro piece that can be loosened or tightened. I just casme form a pair of 852's and these pants are so much better in almost all aspects. Great feel , protection and resistance to rips. Deffiently check them out at least at your LHS . Just so you know they felt weird at first becasue of the tightness coming from the tacks , but after the adjustment period is done I absoloutly loved them .

It might be something to consider but I like to put my pants on after my shins and skates so I kind of need the leg zippers. I do have the supremes on my lists as I believe they are similar to the vapors but with a bit looser legs and of course the zippers.

I have just tried the 8k's on and never used them so I couldn't tell you about the tail bone or hip protection, but they were very mobile and have zippers. The legs are adjustable so they fit the length that you want. I think i might get a pair of 8k's pretty quick.

Also, just a heads up. I was not please with my XX pants this year. They have not been durable at all. Lots of rips, cuts. I got them caught in gates and ripped both legs. I have seen two different pairs of XXX lite pants rip in the same spots and get cut open. Not the most durable pant.

DL, that's great advice! I never thought of that. I guess that does open up the door for a few choices, although I'd probably prefer getting a pair of pants that I didn't need to mod or have modified.

I was actually thinking about the 8Ks after seeing the last thread with pics of them. But I hear they are a little bulky and heavy, I'm not sure how true that is but I'd love to hear some opinions. Again, weight isn't a deal buster but it would be nice to have some lighter pants... I really don't need pro level protection.

If you can get your hands on a pair of Itech HP8000 pants, I would think they are perfect for what you listed.

That is their old pro-level pants.

I had a pair of bauers that I landed so hard on the tailbone on, it cracked the protector and I couldn't sit for about 3 weeks.

I bought the Itech HP-8000, they are snugger/more streamlined than the Bauers (these were old bauer 1000's), they have fantastic tailbone padding, are plenty long, without being cumbersome (I'm 6'3'') and have zippers.

I got mine for about $50 on clearance, and honestly, they are the best pant I ever tried. I tried the CCM tacks (652's), another pair of Bauers (4000) and the Itech (as a last option thinking they would be too cheap/not enough padding), but they were the best of the lot.

I can't say enough good things about them.

String and velcro fastening, inside zippers

Thats a pic of them.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as TBLfan so I've been following this thread with great interest. I haven't been able to find the HP8000 but the HP6600 sounds very interesting.... LINK

I'll have a chance to go to Peranis in Pittsburgh in a couple weeks so I'm gonna look at these while I'm there. Thanks for the tip!

Tackla 9000, but you would have to add tailbone padding to suit your needs.

I have the Tackla 5000's and love them.

I have Tacklas and I love them. Great mobility and great durability. The 5000 pros even have zippers.

Thats right. They are awesome pants. I checked out the new One90's and they are nice but didnt feel as mobile as the T5000'S.

This is going to sound stupid -- but I have my limits!

I was going to buy a pair of Tacka pants but I can't stand the thought of having big logos on the front of both my thighs. Fortunately, I don't play hockey in Europe because I don't want to be a human billboard.

Yeah, I could have taken one or two of the patches off, but then you have the holes where the sewing is. Gotta love us fussy consumers!

thanks guys for the answers. How's the tailbone padding on the tacklas(5000/9000)? I want a bit more than a piece of felt or something comparable to that.

My LHS doesn't carry tacklas and doesn't have the new supreme series, so I can't really compare the two. Also I heard that the one90/70/50 fits a bit wider in the leg area than the XXXlite... is this correct?

The tailbone padding on the 5000's have been great for me. On another note if you want to get a deal on a great pair of pants, look for some Franklins. I know Peranis and a few other places had some left. They were great pants, with great protection all around, coolmax and zippers.

I'll see what I can find for you and link it.

CCM 892 tacks are amazing best pant i have ever worn, stiff at first but in a few weeks they are great.

I can't say enough about these pants as well....

I am new to hockey, 35 with a house full of kids! I started skating in a pair of tehse 6 months ago...I was falling down every 5 strides! The pants have been 100% durable and still look new. I have since sold them and moved into a smaller pair of 892's because of the weight I lost. I am midseason into our adult league, and they look brand new. They offer a ton of protection, and have the leg zippers you are looking for. They are a bit stiff at first, but eventually break in!

I've been using the 6k's and they are pretty solid. You can adjust how far down the legs pads hang and there are zippers on the outer shell. I've had them for about 3-4 months and they are holding up fine. I've taken shots in the leg area and fallen a bunch times but no rips and nothing is coming apart.

considering I think my 692s are too bulky, wouldn't the 892s be even bulkier?

Dammit, I might need to go to the other LHS to look for pants. :(
