How small is too small?

Recommended Posts

I wear a size 6 skate and this weekend at our allstar game one of the girls on my team commented on "how small" my skates are.

I'm 5'9 and have always worn small skates.

She is 5'5 and wears a size 7.5. Then I was talking to one of hte guys running the allstar game and asked me if I was able to get any acceleration in skates that small.

Am I going crazy? Both my brother and I always wear small skates. Are we wrong or is this something new with players wearing larger skates?

I wear a size 11 shoe and 8.5 D RBK 9K skates. No matter how big or small your skates are fiy is the most important thing. Wearing a skate that is to big will result in a number of problems poor fit, will hurt your skating technique and can also lead to premature breakdown of the skates

i wear 8.5 or 8 shoes so i can fit into a 7 skate (depending on brand) easy and i can skate past most people i play with. for a girl i would say a size 6 is normal

How small is too small?

I ask my girlfreind that question all the time....

damn ogie, i saw that title and i was ready to pounce on it.

Yep, too hard to resist! ;)

It's how you use your skates that counts. I wear size 6 as well. And I'm a MAN.

Nice!

If it makes you feel any better Ti Girl, Paul Coffey (widely considered the best all time skater) wore skates that were in fact TOO SMALL for his feet. It doesn't matter.

Also consider Brian Gionta wears about a 5.5 vapor and he's pretty quick. Quick enough to make it in the show at least :)

Dont' worry about it and work on your technique/conditioning if it really bothers you.

I just realized not too long ago that my skates that i've had for the past year were a bit too big. My uncle (who I got my new skates from..) was surprised that my stride hadn't struggled and became poor from having skates too big. My new skates are 9EE XXXX's which have a 280 holder on'm. My last skates had 288mm Pitch Holder on'm.

Due to wide feet and poor fitting advice i had worn my skates nearly 2 sizes to big in my previous years. I now fit cofortably into a 5.5 EE stretched /punched and my skating improved greatly.

I obviously wasn't there, but I think they were referring to the size of your feet, not the fit of your skates...

A few years ago, that's what I had to do. Going up a size to get the right width that is. Now once I mold a EE skate to my foot its perfect.

Its odd how some people do fit the rule of going down a size or size and half from shoe size and others don't. I wear a 9 or 9.5 street shoe and a 6.5D in Pro Tacks...toes brush the end cap just perfectly. Had a pair of bauer supremes in a size 7D which were a little narrow, but the holder was the same size as my CCMs...and I wore a pair of Easton Z Airs that were a 7, but were a bit too large in length.

Most people don't wear their shoes snug though, so skate size varies.

I agree but a lot of people aren't sized properly for skates either.

I can honestly say that I wear my shoes a half size too big, but try and find a size 12.5 running shoe.

And of course Chadd does bring up a very valid point. A lot of people just don't understand what fits their feet, especially when it comes to something like skates.

I work for a women's team and the skate sizes range from 4.0 to 7.0. The player wearing a size 7 is 6'1". That can help put it into perspective a little bit. Most girls wear a junior skate... I think your friend who is 5'5" and wearing a 7.5 is in a skate that is waaay too big for her.

If I could afford to build up youth skates I would buy a kids 5...but I don't.

If you are buying sr skates, you can afford to build up a jr skate. It will end up being about the same price. I think it is about $100 to get a skate customized... (I'm not sure of retail in the 40's so I'll use the 30's as an example) so:

Vapor XXX Jr: Retail- $259 + $100 customize= $359

Vapor XXX Sr: Retail- $399

Those are approximate prices... but it should work out that way with most skates you buy. Put the money into a pair that fits and you will wear them for a long time.

Yeah I suppose.

Well I have RBK 9K's. My toes touch the end, but I LOVE the feeling of having small skates so I was considering getting a smaller pair, but I'm going to wait until I trash these, which usually happens quickly. I tore through a pair of Bauer's in a year...

Agreed. There's no way that skate fits her properly.
