ExitTwoEighty 7 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 Basically, the unwritten rule everywhere that I've played hockey is that goalies do not have to pay for the league fee. Because they have to pay for their gear, and no one likes playing goalie. I'm starting to play goalie for my friend this weekend and he expects me to pay him.... I'm not sure how to break it to him. Anyways, Do you guys charge the goalie to play on your team?
sabres48 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 For open hockey, puck time whatever you call it, goalies are always free, but not for leagues. Player equipmetn isnt cheap either, and we still have to pay. At least for me i have never seen a goalie not have to pay for a league unless it was a bribe situatuion where say a league is one goalie short and the team neeeeeeds a goalie, then thay may waive the fee to up your interesest, but otherwise i dont see why you shouldnt be paying. Chadd 916 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 Around here, some guys pay and some guys don't. I've never charged a goalie to play on one of my teams, but the expense of the position is somewhat overstated in beer leagues. A guy buying top end player gear can easily outspend someone buying mid-level goalie gear.
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 Anyone who charges a goalie to play is a no-good rat-fink; charging goalies is tantamount to making prostitutes pay YOU for sex!...I could have made a better case for myself, there...
sabres48 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 They use the icetime too, so why shouldnt they pay for it?
Jarick 5 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 Most of the open hockey around here lets goalies play free, but the semi-organized pickup games I play charge goalies. I know most of the teams around here pay for at least some of the goalie fees for league play.I would say it depends on the goalie. If there was a great goalie and really nice guy, I'd try and get the team to pay for most if not all the fees. No idea what my team is doing though.
sc37 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2007 It's a supply and demand thing. Sometimes there seems to be plenty of goalies around and they pay, but other times there's a sortage and seemingly everyone is willing to offer a spot on a team for free. The way I see it is that if it takes a free goalie to fill out a spot any where, league or drop-in, I'm ok for it cause it beats having to play against that damn Rick O'Shay, lol. sabres48 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 thats what i used to SC. If there is a need for a goalie its a lure to not have them pay. Any other situatuion that wouldnt result in the use of a rick o shay, make the goalie pay.
BK 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 It all depends on the area. The rink that I play at doesn't require them to pay for drop-in but does make them pay for house league. For dropin, it draws players in because nobody likes to drop the net. For a league, its more of the responsibility of the team because if they don't have a goalie, that rick o shay isn't going to help. There are a couple goalies here that I wouldn't mind replacing with with a piece of plywood, but thats more of a personal thing with some goalies being complete assholes. SCATMAN 33 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 When our team goes away for a tournament we cover our Goalies fees. But he can buy his own damn food lol
lb33knight 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 My goalies have always paid unless we were without one a week before the start of the season and we used a free season as a bargaining chip to pick one up. As stated above, they use the same ice time too. Their gear may cost more but they replace it less often. The goalie on my team just replaced his gear for the first time after 8 years. We have 3 seasons a year. Somehow 24 free seasons would work out in his favor if that was how we had done it.
All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 Its been so bad around here with goalies. We've had to give them rides to and from the rink so they could avoid gas money. Pay for their dinner afterwards. We've even had to pay them like $10 for their time to play goalie. Its bad, we dont have to many goalies here.
jcp2 2 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 Goalies are half price in open drop in, and there's a discount for them in the open draft league. We don't charge them when we rent the ice for a session. It's up to each team how they handle the league fees for their goalies, although I think most don't charge full freight.
The Stranger 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 The team I was on last season he paid half, but other teams I have been on they were free. Drop-in is (usually) free, there are even a few rinks I have heard of that pay them $10 to show up.
wickedlite44 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 heres the deal at my rink. if you go into the draft the league fee is waived. if you want to play with a specific team, then you pay the rink fee. now here is where it gets good. if you make it to all of your games you get a $250 gift certificate to the pro-shop. the thought process for that is, if we have all the good goalies in the area play at this rink, all the players will want to play here too. Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 wickedlite, that's a great system - probably the best I've ever heard of. You guys must have some dedicated goalies. :)Yeah, I've asked for rides (don't have a car) or been given cab fare, but any time a team offered me money to play, I've graciously accepted and made sure to turn up at the pub afterwards and put it right back into the beer fund. wickedlite44 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 it sounds ilke a great system at first, but it has not attracted any new goalies to the rink. its a roller rink by the way.

I would still be a goalie if it wasn't for my injuries, I loved it.sorry, what I meant was that there was a shortage of goalies. I just assumed it was true because no one wanted to play goalie. My friends team didn't have a dedicated goalie and someone reluctantly suited up each time as goalie for games, so I just decided to be goalie full time for them. Though I've never played goalie before, they're in the lower leagues. Hey wickedlite44 where do you play at? I wouldn't mind playing for $250 bucks.
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 The odd thing is, I've managed to convert two of my friends - who hadn't played anything more than ball hockey - into full-time ice goalies.I can't believe that isn't attracting more goalies, wicked. Have you tried advertising on the GoalieStore.com bulletin board (aka GSBB)? Offhand, I know there are a bunch of guys who play in Dallas and would probably be all over that. Even if you couldn't find established goalies, I'd be more than willing to bet there are at least a couple of guys who are short on gear and cash and would play to build up their lockers.Frankly, the only thing that stops me from playing roller is that, having played between pipes on ice since I was nine, I find it incredibly awkward, and actually a little dangerous - I feel like I'm constantly one wrong step from a high-ankle sprain. wickedlite44 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2007 I play at a roller rink just north of Dallas. It doesn't help that the owner has already pissed off a lot of players. The rink has not attracted any established goalies , but I have tarted to ply pickup .
