Jarick 5 Report post Posted November 2, 2007 Read enough bad stories that I wouldn't ever remove my cage unless I was getting paid millions of dollars to play hockey.

TBLfan 25 Report post Posted November 2, 2007 My buddy got 8 stitches on his lip. I've never gotten hurt with a shield on but without a shield I took a deflected puck to my eyebrow ridge... I could have gotten probably 6 stitches but I decided hockey tape and neosporin was better than a trip the the ER.
wetwilly17 6 Report post Posted November 2, 2007 i used to wear a visor. i skated hard to beat a slower guy to a loose puck and braced myself for the hit...normally not a problem. the guy raised his elbow up and caught my mouth. i don't think he did it maliciously, i think he was just trying to protect himself, but the wrong way. i still finished the game but i had to keep my shifts short before too much blood would drip around and the refs kick me off. after the game, it wouldn't stop bleeding so i went to er to get stitches, 11 total inside and outside of my mouth. loose teeth hurt too. that was the final straw...now i wear a cage. its saved me many times since.since getting used to wearing a cage, i dont think i protect myself as much as i used to. i think i have learned that nothing hurts my face anymore so i don't try to protect it like i used to. i get wacked in the face way more than i used to. so if you are used to wearing a cage, be really careful if you take it off. Monty22 832 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 A chunk of wood from a high stick was put through my chin, just below my lower lip. No stiches, but probably should have gotten a couple in hindsight... I wear a CCM 480 now.

jbyun04 7 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 worst one i got so far was when someone shot the puck at the goalie and i went to the net. the puck rebounded off the goalie's stick and chucked me in the front teeth. wasn't too bad but i'm thinking it was a good thing i had my mouthguard on
flyerman 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 Well, I went to a visor after this guy nailed me just above my left eye. He said my head hit his helmet as we were both going full speed to a loose puck with our heads down, but other guys on the ice told me he caught me with the butt end of his stick. Anyway, six stitches later and a eye completely swollen shut, my (then) wife tells me that if I want to play hockey anymore, I have to wear a visor (which i had done in the past, just preferred not wearing one at all for "vison's sake"). I figured it wasn't worth fighting over with her, and certainly the benefits of playing without a visor weren't worth the potential for losing an eye. While wearing my visor of course I've been hit in the mouth with the puck, busted open my lips and few times (I wear a mouthgaurd which saved my teeth) and gotten a few sticks to the side of the face and chin, but the worst was to my.....yet again.....eye! I was going hard to the net and the winger rifled a centering pass to me. The defenseman stuck out his stick and the puck deflected off his blade right up UNDER my visor and split my eyelid open like a can of tuna. A lot of blood. It needed three or four at least, but I didn't have insurance, and so I just used some butterfly stitches and kept it clean, and it didn't really scar at all.I wear an Oakley straight small visor, and I am thinking that if I had had a longer visor like my old Itech Pro Cut that went below my nose, that puck couldn't have gotten under there. Kind of a freak accident, I suppose, but I still couldn't believe I could get cut under there that badly by a puck. That said, I have taken numerous sticks straight to the front of the visor leaving marks right in front of my eyes. So I think it has saved my sight on more than one occassion...
LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 I got cut my first time on the ice with the half glass; at Junior A camp - I made a one-touch play on a pass through the middle and spun-off the defenseman as he stepped-up to hit me. I managed to avoid most of the hit, but he kinda glanced off me and the top of his hand caught my visor - tilting it back far enough for his butt-end to get under and catch the bridge of my nose.I didn't really realize I was bleeding until I looked down to play the puck with my skates during a battle along the boards a few seconds later and blood ran down off my nose and covered the inside of my visor. Got off the ice, had a couple butterflies thrown on it and I was good to go. Nothing major by any means. It looked a Hell of a lot worse than it actually was. I guess I'm lucky he didn't clip my eye. Indeed 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 I got hit in the face with a slapshot, just below the visor. Broke my nose, cheek and orbital bones. ALso completely blew out my sinus cavity. I now still have nose bleeds regularly and it happend over a year ago.
hunterphfr 12 Report post Posted November 4, 2007 I got nailed from behind and hit the boards pretty hard head first, heltmet came forward and my visor cut me across the nose. I work in an ER as my side job and had it glued shut after the game. Swapped the visor out for an old catseye cage from my box lacrosse days while it was healing and haven't switched back. I was having problems with fogging over the summer, probably because Florida's a frigging swamp.

thefelixculpa 0 Report post Posted November 4, 2007 in a 1 on 1 I beat my guy and was on a breakaway for a second or two when out of no where the guy whom I beat came up behind me and I guess he was trying to lift my stick, i'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but the edge of the toe of his blade went right into my mouth and connected in between my two front teeth and knocked them both loose, then slid up under my top lip and cut my gums up and inside of my mouth real bad.it bled for days, tooth is not loose anymore though.
