Chelios: "There are no Drugs in Hockey"

Recommended Posts

"For some reason, hockey's never been involved, and I don't think it ever will be," the Detroit Red Wings defenseman said Thursday, just before Mitchell released his report on the use of performance-enhancing substances in Major League Baseball.

"It just hasn't been an issue with our sport," Chelios said. "No one's ever mentioned it. No one's ever approached me, and I've been around longer than anyone. I've been in gyms, I've been training, I've had a trainer for 14 years. It's never once occurred, so I've just never thought about it."

is there a problem with steroids etc in the nhl? after the mitchell report being released yesterday is chelios trying to act first before they find any dirt or fellow nhlpa members?

I know there have a been a few minor instances... wasn't someone suspended for a while a couple of years ago for using performance enhancing substances?

Sean Hill last season. Apparently it was a situation of him using a contaminated supplement.

No, I don't think you have that kind of problem in the NHL. Sure you'll have a few, that's unavoidable. MLB never addressed a problem they knew about. That problem bloomed into the one they have today.

MLB didn't want to address the problem because it was selling seats

Jose Theodore was under suspicion but he passed it off as Rogaine or something.

If anyone thinks Chelly is using, just look at him. He's lost a ton of weight to keep his mobility and endurance high, and his training schedule is intense year round to never let himself slip from peak shape.

Using steroids at the NHL level would almost be detrimental, you need speed, finesse, and mobility over raw power.

Isn't this one of those steroids myths? Roids help your recovery time, so you can train harder and feel more energized. It also battles against muscular breakdown. Yes, a by-product is muscle growth (not to mention head size), but mainly it's to increase your training capacity.

What about HGH? Would anyone be surprised if some players used it? It's undetectable and you don't end up looking like Mr. Olympia.

If that were true then why are so many of the names on the Mitchell report pitchers? If anyone in baseball requires mobility and flexibility it would be a pitcher.

There is no evidence that HGH improves athletic performance at all, in any sport.

Theodore's positive test was based on a test done when he was at a Team Canada Camp.

The list of banned substances that the IOC and WADA use is HUGE. You can't even take cold medication without popping +.

He was made ineligible for International competition (for 2 years I think)because of that test.

^^ Yup - that's how Silken Laumann lost her Olympic Gold to an over-the-counter cold medication given to her by a team doctor. Bloody idiot...

There are lots of drugs in hockey - they're just recreational. Wade Redden's dedicated powder room isn't going to help Ottawa win a cup anytime soon, nor are Mike Modano's horticultural aspirations a big plus for the Stars.**

**Pure unadulterated hearsay.

There were some issues with enforcers in the league as Dave Morissette reveals in his book, but i don't think there's anything with the "real" players.

I would guess it happens more in minor league hockey or before they make it to the nhl - I would assume once they make it to the show they are smart enough to realize that they would get caught.

I agree 110%

I have heard stories from friends who are former teammates that Messier loved the blow during his prime, we all know about Theo Fleury and his personal demons. Think back about the stories of former Rangers like Ron Duguay. The rumor going around for a while was that during his prime in NYC he was up to his neck in coke all the time, and even had his own private key to Studio 57 during the 70's and 80's

Regards to steroids, the only pro hockey players that I know who take them are usually in the ECHL, CHL, IHL, SPHL and LNAH and are guys trying to stand out in any way to move up to the next level. Plus they dont do any drug testing at that level, nor do most coaches really care what their guys do in their free time unless it is hurting the team. One of my former teammates playing in the LNAH told me guys in his dressing room are selling steroids to each other, but that league has some guys that are plain nuts and if you are fighting there and not juiced, you will get pummeled because 90% of the tough guys are

IIRC, Bryan Berard was suspended a few games last year or the year before as well. Numbers wise, the odds are there are at least a few- the random suspension here and there proves that. I don't think it's anywhere near as widespread as it is in MLB.

I think it's alot more widespread than we want to imagine, thus all the naive posts repelling the thought...

Around here they actually do through doping tests reguarly during the season... Most players get caught with cannabis, but a few get caught with roids.

I don't know if there's been a double-blind study on HGH, but the designer of the Clear said Conte was measuring improved performance with Bonds. Further, Marion Jones set her personal best in the 100 while on the Clear.

Thus, anecdotally, I'd say there is evidence that HGH improves athletic performance.

Call me cynical but I feel there's PEDs in every pro sport. From volleyball to golf. If you could use something that you've been assured will increase your income in your non-pro sports job, wouldn't you do it?

Not if it shrinks my junk and makes my body breakdown after a few years.

The Clear and HGH are 2 different things. The Clear is TGH.

Fellas, let's be careful before we start throwing comments around about what illegal drugs may or may not be prevalent in the NHL. We definitely want to be sure about names before we start tossing them in.
