What will the Penguins do with their goalie situation?

Recommended Posts

With Fleury out 6-8 weeks Pittsburgh looks to be in worse trouble than they were before. Sabourin can't handle a full load for 2 months in my opinion.

Atleast if they miss the playoffs this season they can blame it on losing the starting goalie for 2 months.

Conklin? He helped bail out the Jackets last year a bit as a third stringer...or who does Phoenix have that they want to ditch like they did with Auld?

My only thing with that is there is a reason they're both almost 30 and have been career AHL'ers..

Sabo has played well some games, but then as he did against the Sens he just drops it for half a period or so and lets in some easy ones.

Wish this would have happened a month ago so they could have made a run at Auld or Bryzgalov.

Bryzgalov would have been an excellent pick up for them, but when Fleury gets healthy i would definatly trade him, but i dont think you will get anything good for him.

what about emery or gerber from ottawa? (to be honest i dont really know whose been declared the starter - if they have yet)

the sens have to make some cap room for next year anyways

and if not...well maybe tom barrasso will come out of retirement!:)

Montreal could try to swing a deal with the Pens to get a decent return for Huet and go with a Price/Halak combo. Halak could also be the one traded as he did play quite well down the stretch last year and showed the potential to be a good number one goalie, but the Pens would probably want someone with a bit more experience like Huet.

Wouldn't surprise me to see perhaps John Curry steal a start depending on how well he keeps playing in the minors.

that would be awesome

Cujo last seen packing his bags and jumping a plane and hitting the burg!!!!

Hmm, I think the Penguins will let Cujo play in the Spengler next week and see what he has left before signing him. If he is as good as last year's Cujo, he is a better option splitting time with Sabourin than trading away assets for somebody else's garbage.

I would do nothing. For the most part, the games they aren't winning aren't about goaltending or even defense, they are about lack of finishing. The blame IMO lies solely with the forwards, even to the extent about getting lazy on their backchecking.

Ty Conklin has been a great reliever after Sabourin played a couple of abysmal games. I really thought they'd have to get someone via free agency, but they might just ride Conklin for another 3 or 4 weeks until Marc-Andre returns...

Interestingly enough, Sabu has been breaking in some old school looking pads for the Classic, but its looking like coach is gonna go for THE ANSWER Ty Conklin to start, who does not have differerent pads.. Made for TV or not, the game is worth 2 points and he has to play the man who gives the Pens the best chance to win..

Fleury is doing some light skating, but is still 4-6 weeks away

Add onto the goalie situation the fact that Gary Roberts just went down with a broken tibula and is gonna be out 2-4 months .

They should make a pass at Ryder to replace Roberts. Ryder can play with Sid and move one of the other guys down a notch.

WIth Joseph's performance at the Spengler, I'm sure some team will be willing to pick him up, wouldn't see how it would hurt Pittsburgh if they could sign him for a decent salary.

in the paper today were some rumors that san jose is interested in gonchar for cheechoo - gonchar gets about 5mil/year and cheechoo is around 3mil/year - they figure maybe letang/whitney can make up for losing gonchar.. i dunno about that though.

the reasoning for this is to get a pure goal scorer on a line with crosby - since noone else seems to be able to fill this void.

The powerplay has looked sluggish this year anyway, and the games Gonchar didn't play it looked completely terrible, trading him wouldn't be too smart.
