(7x2) + 7(7x4) + 7(4(7x7)) = 14 + 196 + 1372 = 1582 total legs

you don't multiply each entity together...you group them and add them. 7x2 for the girls, 7(7x4) for the big cats in the backpacks, 7(4(7x7)) for the little cats.

This is the correct answer, no further answers necessary!

Except you're off by a power of 7.

2*7 + 4*7^3 + 4*7^4 = 10990

Ok, let me try this a different way.

big cats:

7 girls * 7 backpacks/girl * 7 big cats/backpack = 343 big cats

small cats:

343 big cats * 7 small cats/big cats = 2401 small cats

So....

343 big cats * 4 legs/big cat = 1372 legs

2401 small cats * 4 legs/small cat = 9604 legs

7 girls * 2 legs/girl = 14 legs

1372 + 9604 + 14 = 10990 legs

This is the correct answer. unless there's something stupid like you have to add the driver's legs or something. It's crazy how people come up with some really wrong answers.... :(

Lets look at this another way:

7 Girls = 14 legs.

each girl has 7 back packs. 7x7= 49 backpacks.

Each backpack has 7 Big cats and 49 Little cats.

the 7 Big cats legs (7*4=28) and the little cats legs (49*4=196) equals 224 legs per backpack. (28+196=224)

224 legs per backpack multiplied by the number of backpacks equals 10976(224*49=10976)

Take the number of legs in the backpacks (10976) and add in the number of girl's legs. (10976+14=10990)

Whoever said 10,990 first had the correct answer. I just thought I would break it down differently so maybe people who aren't that good at math (like myself) would be able to grasp it better.

god...

no wonder why all the asians get number 1 at school lol

I don't see a single thing in this thread that has to do with asians and math. The only two things that this thread illustrates is the vast majority of MSH's members are terrible math students, and you are a terrible English student.

a "leg" of a trip isn't covered in this question :D

Why would any girl carry 7 backpacks anyway?

To put 49 cats in each one. :(

Fixed that for ya... I think?

Some of you may want to ask your Ivy League schools for a discount, because I overheard my 9-year-old telling her older sister, "...seven big cats who each had seven little cats. And I was one of the only two that got the right answer."

This shocked me, because I admit when I did my quick calculation that I forgot each girl had seven backpacks, so I asked her, "What was the correct answer?"

"1....0....9....9....0"

The Ivy Leagues are slacking, gentlemen.... :P

56... sorry, but this is an extremely embarrassing showing of the knowledge on this board. Lock it please before it gets any worse.

EDIT - My apologies for the above typographical error. I have fixed the error, and thankfully, no one will misconstrue my comments anymore due to a missing "r."

Is this really just supposed to be a math problem, or is it a riddle that absolutely no one has yet to pick up on? Either way, it's fucking dumb.

A 2 Page Math thread...a new MSH record *L*
and a new record low for correct answers as well.

I remember a few years ago where an OPC redemption card had the math problem on the back for Canadians to answer in order to receive the bonus card (or whatever it was).

A few thousand people got it right, OPC got it wrong. At least this problem here requires a bit of thinking. The OPC problem was something like (2 + 4) x 6 = ?
