Mouth Guards

Recommended Posts

How could i go about getting a custom mouth guard? That one with the team stuff on it would be sick but i coudlnt justifying spending $75 plus shipping tax and all that, probably come to about $110ish. I have been using shockdoctor ones but there kind of annoying and cheap, in our rugby league you need one.

Go to the dentist.

And to make the shock doctors less annoying, I find boiling them a second time helps a lot.

I'm in the hunt for a mouth guard and I went to my dentist and the custom one he showed me was 60-70 dollars and looked like one of those bulky $10 Reebok Smartmouth ones, I was not impressed. I apparently don't have a huge flappy upper lip because the two mouth guards I've tried (Reebok Smartmouth and Shocky Doctor Power Gel Ultra) I could not close my mouth at all. It looked like I had a hockey puck stuck in my mouth. I'm really in need of a LOW profile mouth guard that can still provide some protection. Any suggestions? Pro-Tekt, Gladiator?

I use a Shock Doctor pro for martial arts sparring (hate wearing it for puck) and it's also a good idea to grab a case for transport and storage.

I just throw my mouthguard in my bag..let it sit with my gear for a few days and pop it back into my mouth when I go back on the ice.. is that wrong?

I heard a story of some kid getting a serious infection by doing that. It's like putting a piece of meat in your mouth that's been on the ground for a few hours.

just finish off a cream cheese container or something similar, wash it out and throw it in there. some guys i know like to use old dip cans...

I had another reminder of why i need a mouthguard last week. During a beer league game the opposing players stick came up and clipped me right on my upper lip. Luckily it wasn't too had and didnt draw any blood. My tooth took quite a knock though i think it would have broken if it weren't for my mouth peice!!

I have a Pro-Tekt, very nice mouthguard. It's the first mouthguard I've worn since I was forced to because of rules.

I have one of those $5-10 ShockDoctor mouth guards, and haven't really had any problems with it. It's comfortable enough while I'm on the ice, so I don't feel the need for upgrading to a more expensive model.

Anbody here switch to a new mouthguard that they enjoy better? My braces are off and I have been using the the Shockdoctor "braces" mouthguard, but now need a new one.

Should I stick with Shockdoctor? or what other OTC brands should i strongly consider?

I think you should stick with shockdoctor. during high school tryouts i lost my SD and had to use one of those regular A&R ones, they just dont compare protection and fit wise. if you like the fit of SD, stick with em

Shock doctor now has a full custom program that let's you create the mold at home, I think it costs $150 - check their website. Also, a custom fit guard is always going to be more protective and usually more comfortable than any boil and bite mouthguard you can buy.

I use the Shockdoctor Gravity 2 mouthguard. I think its a great mouthguard. It sits on the bottom teeth so it doesnt fall out easily, and its hard to chew on it. Also, it always for great breathing, and talking.

In need of a new mouth guard, what do you guys use, any recommendations?

Lil' info; I've always used the cheapo boil 'n' bite variety and I'm starting to realise why their so cheap, looked at the RBK Custom Smartmouth and pretty much all the shockdocs and just wanted opinions before I purchase.

Eternally in your debt,

Pantherfan

I have the Shock Doctor Ultra STC and love it. Yes it's a boil 'n' bite, but it fits better than any other one I've had before. The fit is good, speech isn't bad, and it doesn't seem to make breathing hard.

I have mentioned it in the past. But I ordered an opro custom mouth guard when I didn't have dental insurance 4 years ago and I am still happy with it. http://www.opro.com/

I got a single color medium at the time it was under $50, looks like now it would be $57 plus shipping back the impression (like an additional $5). It also took a couple weeks to get it.

Breathing has never been an issue, speech is okay and I haven't had any gagging issues like I got from boil and bites.

Very happy with my gladiator "custom" mouthguard. 1/3 the price of the shockdoctor and very similar molding process. wouldn't trade it for the world. I even forget I have it on.

I have the gladiator and can't recommend it highly enough. I use to use the boil and bite, but found breathing difficult. After finally biting the bullet because custom's do cost more than boil-n-bite mouthguards I now realize it was way worth it. Breathing, talking and comfort way surpass off the shelf guards.
