RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 What's the status of that 'you need a passport to cross the border' thing? Is a license, and birth cert. still enough to cross the 49th?
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 I always carry my passport any more, it's just easier. I'm not sure exactly what the rules are right now, here are some links that may help.http://www.gonorthwest.com/Visitor/plannin...der/USvisit.htmhttp://www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/programs/editorial_0685.shtm
RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted October 16, 2008 Until June, Lic. and BC is enough...after that it's passports for everyone. I've never traveled out side of Canada, other than close border trips, so I don't have a passport. Guess I'll be getting one before the 5th MSH Skate.Thanks. LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 I know NYS has an "Enhanced Drivers' License" program going - like $80 for a license that is apparently the only piece of I.D. you would need to cross the border. Not sure if such a program is available in Ontario, but it might be worth looking into. Personally, I think my passport is a better value, but it is another option......although I will say it's no fun when you don't have said passport. I ended-up crossing the border on a whim with a few buddies a couple weeks ago and neglected to take my passport out of the car (someone else drove) before we left. All I had was my license and a bank card. Three underage kids (one of whom without proper documentation) in a sportscar stuffed to capacity with hockey equipment...you can bet we got some shit coming back into the States (extensively questioned, searched, etc.). Long story short, I'm now "flagged" in the "system" as being "non-compliant" - which apparently isn't TOO big a deal, since I've crossed the border almost everyday since (with my passport, of course) without any issues. LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 Haven't had an officer on either side of the border say anything about it since...and I'm hoping that it stays that way.
mack 44 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 Passcards are pretty nice and supposedly may be required in some states. Either way, I'm part paranoid and microwaved my passport this year to kill the chip.

Rustpot 1 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 Theres a chip in passports? No, mack's a paranoid bastard. I've heard stuff about that being why the photo is so raised or having something in the binding. Not enough people have passports for the government to use that as their tracking system anyhow. lampliter87 8 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I know NY will now be offering an "Enhanced" Driver's License that costs an extra $40 but allows you to cross the border into Canada or Mexico without a passport- don't know if any other states offer anything similar....and sorry to Mr. Tiger who has already mentioned this. Rustpot 1 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 Yes, it's just me.Well I'll be damned. I've been hearing stuff about chips in passports since I got one in '98, just thought it was that same BS.
Gummer12 134 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I can see CA, but why Mexico with a NY license? I'm sure there are some business people and a fair share of vacationers...but really, those people should have Passports anyways, so why go through the trouble of going through negotiations to add that feature? The state issued ID along with some other documentation like a birth certificate will work until 2009 is what I heard last. Funny about being flagged, cause I got crap when I was heading into Canada cause the woman caugt me off guard with a couple questions- she wanted to see my reservations for my hotel (they were in my bags in the trunk) and also wondered what was my occupation. I said student- forgetting I am pretty much graduated so I had to backtrack a little when she asked what classes I was taking, lol. Coming back into the states we got held up in this line behind a car for like 10 minutes and the whole time we thought we had some hardass and were gonna get searched and everything. I mean the guy was making them test their blinkers on their car and everything. We finally pull up and the guy barely glances at our passports, IDs and tells us to keep moving. When we start moving we see the car that was in front of us pull into the parking lot and a middle eastern/Indian family hop out for further quesitoning....I found it kinda ironic, lol. jrhky36 1 Report post Posted October 25, 2008 when i was in the national gaurd we were assigned to help out customs. man did we have fun. the boarder i worked was det/windsor. friday nites were great, the teenagers coming back drunk, stupid and beligerant. so one kid whos driving daddy 7series bmw comes to my lane at 3:30am,and he starts talking to me. i tell him he needs to be quiet and answer my questions. well by now i can smell that he's been drinking. so i as him how have you drank tonite. he respons by say "nothing asshole". so i say wrong answer. i tell him to pull the car over to that spot. all 6 kids are removed and the car is sent to the garage to be searched. the kid is arrested for dwi. and the best part was the car was disassymbled in 45 mins to just parts on the ground and the frame. when the customs agent finished he told the kid he had 1 hour to move the car. i about shit a brick before laughing my ass off. by this time dad shows up and starts screaming at the kid, we had tohold him back so he didn't beat his son to death.moral of the story don't mess around with customs agents.
