Ovechkin and Malkin rivalry?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure they could play okay together but you have to remember, traveling, hotel, locker room presence etc. If these guys are at each others throats when competing, their teammates surely will know it and it could very well be awkward or kill the vibe in the room, which could potentially de-rail Russias hopes.

Kinda of like Tiger and Mickleson on the US Ryder Cup team.

I don't think Phil has ever taken a physical run at Tig though...He probably realizes he would get dropped Haha.

From today's Columbus Dispatch:

The Pittsburgh vs. Washington rivalry, one of the best in the NHL these days, has many different layers.

A new one popped up this week, when Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin confirmed a rumor to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

In August 2007, Washington's Alex Ovechkin punched out Malkin's Russian-based agent, Gennady Ushakov, at a Moscow nightclub.

"Yes," Malkin said. "Bad situation."

The two used to be good friends.

"Good time, good friends, good talk," Malkin said. "Now, it's so-so."

Looks like we could get a Semin-Crosby rivalry too! Should make games interesting

What's so special about [Crosby]? I don't see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there's nothing else. Even if you compare him to Patrick Kane from Chicago ... [Kane] is a much more interesting player. The way he moves, his deking abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the play is so superb.

Maybe the next time the Caps and Pens play, they can drop the gloves and get it out of thier systems. Those are two big boys... I'm sure it would be a good scrap.

In my experiences playing against guys I hated, usually after one good punch-in-the-face contest, things are pretty much solved and we are usually civil to each other after that.

It would be a terrible fight. Malkin hates being hit. He runs from them, ducks out of the way, and after he was hit in the Flyers series was pretty much a non-factor the rest of the play offs (Minus his goal on the same play.)

I disagree.

He avoids hits, I'll agree with that, but as he should. Why on earth would he leave himself in a position to be steamrolled? If you can avoid a hit, you should. They tire you out, and you risk being hurt. As for the playoffs, he was effectively shut down by the Wings. They did a great job on both him and Crosby, and the entire Penguins team. I don't think it had anything to do with Flyers physical play.

That's just my opinion though.

This could be a nice little rivalry for the NHL. Two star players battling.

I guess it is safe to assume that the one95 Ovechkin was using was not a pm9 Malkin curve ;)

As for Crosby, I think he is a great player and playmaker. He is gonna be great for a long time but I really don't like him. Something about his personality and style of play really irks me.

I think Crosby has been a little better as of late - less whiny. It was unbearable watching him in his first year....crying to the ref about every little thing.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/

"It's just a regular game," Ovechkin said when asked if he might take a run or two at Malkin. "I always give big hits, so if I have a chance to hit him, why not? We both play in [the] Russian national team, so it's not a rivalry. We're not friends [but] we can still talk to one another."

Ovechkin told Slava Malamud of Sports-Express that he has not talked to his former buddy since the NHL Award Show in June.

Asked whether there had, in fact, been a falling out with Malkin, Ovechkin said: "It's just the media." Asked if he would be okay playing with Malkin for Russia in Vancouver, possibly on the same line, Ovechkin said, "Yeah. No problem. Why is there going to be a problem?"

I think its blown out of proportion imo..

Because you're familiar with the causes and all of the background information? Or simply because you decided that you would make a judgment based on nothing more than the random speculation that everyone has read as well?

Im gonna agree. I think its media trying to make something out of nothing. Obviously something must have happened, but its not our life, so who cares. I know any time i play against a buddy i'll try to hit them a bit harder than i normally would.

It's 2pac and Biggie all over again.

Oh boy....throw in a hot Russian chick (AKA - Faith Evans) and that just about explains it. Kinda like the Bure/Federov/Anna Kornikova love triangle.

Interviewer: "Why haven't you dated Anna Kournikova yet?"

Ovechkin: "Because Sergei Fedorov say he kill me."

From Slava Malamud (think that's how he spells it). He is a writer for the soviet publication Sports Express. With Ovey, Semin, Feds and Kozlov on the caps roster, as well as Varlamov getting occasional callups, he is in DC all season.

Here is what he said about last night. Malkin might want to keep the head on a swivel...

As for Ovechkin, he acknowledged his third-period attempt to line Malkin up for a big hit. Alex went out of his way in the neutral zone, cutting towards Malkin, but Evgeny was able to circle around him.

"Yes, I wasn't quite lucky there. I went in a slightly wrong direction," Ovechkin said. "But it is good that he is following [my movements] now. Because, if he puts his head down [again], I am not going to forgive him."

Malkin, after emerging from the home team locker room, was also quite forthcoming, actually offering praise for Ovechkin's actions.

"We were going to get a two-on-two situation and he tried to meet me [in the neutral zone]," Malkin said. "I was able to get out of the way, but as it happened he actually made a good play. I lost my speed and the result was offside."
